In Sunday's Rangers/Rays game in Texas, Tampa pitcher Matt Garza allowed a two-run homer to the Rangers's #9 hitter, utility infielder German Duran. As Duran rounded the bases, Rays catcher Dioner Navarro went to the mound and began talking to Garza, a discussion which became heated. The argument continued in the dugout after the inning, with both players heading down the tunnel leading to the clubhouse, with players and pitching coach Jim Hickey racing to break up the scuffle. Garza did not return to the mound for the next inning, leading to speculation he may have been affected (injured) by the situation.
In last Wednesday's Rays/Red Sox game at Fenway, lost in the Coco Crisp/James Shields incident was the Kevin Youkilis/Manny Ramirez tussle in the dugout. Apparently Youkilis said something to Manny (why didn't you go on the field during the brawl?) which Ramirez took offense to, Manny had to be restrained from getting at Youkilis, who wisely hid behind one of the dugout columns.
Pitchers and catchers go thru this kind of thing quite frequently. Position players, especially those who's paths don't cross during the game (LF/1B) don't.
In today's sports section of my local paper (Arizona Republic) is a headline article about the Garza/Navarro situation from yesterday. There was no such article after last weeks incident, yet it is potentially a much more serious issue.
Are there fractures in the Red Sox clubhouse which have/are being brushed aside? And if so, will the team be able to remain focused to the job at hand, which is a return to October baseball? And if the fracture(s) can't be healed, what type of first aid options do the Sox have.
One situation is a non-issue, one is major, yet the non-issue is getting all the attention.
