In Sunday's Rangers/Rays game in Texas, Tampa pitcher Matt Garza allowed a two-run homer to the Rangers's #9 hitter, utility infielder German Duran. As Duran rounded the bases, Rays catcher Dioner Navarro went to the mound and began talking to Garza, a discussion which became heated. The argument continued in the dugout after the inning, with both players heading down the tunnel leading to the clubhouse, with players and pitching coach Jim Hickey racing to break up the scuffle. Garza did not return to the mound for the next inning, leading to speculation he may have been affected (injured) by the situation.

In last Wednesday's Rays/Red Sox game at Fenway, lost in the Coco Crisp/James Shields incident was the Kevin Youkilis/Manny Ramirez tussle in the dugout. Apparently Youkilis said something to Manny (why didn't you go on the field during the brawl?) which Ramirez took offense to, Manny had to be restrained from getting at Youkilis, who wisely hid behind one of the dugout columns.

Pitchers and catchers go thru this kind of thing quite frequently. Position players, especially those who's paths don't cross during the game (LF/1B) don't.

In today's sports section of my local paper (Arizona Republic) is a headline article about the Garza/Navarro situation from yesterday. There was no such article after last weeks incident, yet it is potentially a much more serious issue.

Are there fractures in the Red Sox clubhouse which have/are being brushed aside? And if so, will the team be able to remain focused to the job at hand, which is a return to October baseball? And if the fracture(s) can't be healed, what type of first aid options do the Sox have.

One situation is a non-issue, one is major, yet the non-issue is getting all the attention.

Everyone's quick to find ways to discredit an underrated team's success. In Boston, it's just Manny being Manny, blah blah blah, they'll probably still win the World Series. That's just the opinion of a self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist.

As someone living in Boston, I can tell you it isn't true...the morning after the incident...which was after a celtics win, the brawl with the rays and a sox win that was the #1 topic... At the time, no one knew wy they were fighting...and it was absolutely scrutinized

BTW, disregarding the incident, apparently Youkilis is a huge douche or a person... Not that Manny isn't (different kind of douche, i suppose), but Youkilis is a downright asshole from all accounts i've heard

"Huge douche or a person" That "or" should be an "of"....but it sounds funnier as "or"

People are starting to pay attention to the Rays because they're contending, so the spotlight shines brighter on them, which is why the Youk/Manny incident didn't make as much of a splash as the Navarro/Garza thing did. I love the feistiness from the Rays, by the way. I think the consensus in Boston is Youk went a little nuts in the dugout after a bad AB, Manny told him to cut it out, and the scuffle ensued. I don't think it's something to be to worried about. They've won 8 of 10, and JD (no longer Nancy) Drew is hitting .519 since Ortiz went on the DL.

Apparently Youkilis gets a little pissy after every AB he doesn't get on base with...

Yeah, if there were ever guys with opposite personalities about their hitting, it's Manny and Youk. It's not that Manny doesn't care (he does, A LOT), he just puts stuff behind him. Youk takes every AB like it's the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, his team's down a run and the bases are loaded.

That makes it a little better, Meg. If Youkilis questioned Manny about not going on the field, then that's an integrity issue, and a personal one. Telling a guy to STFU is no big deal, and going by what JuT said, (Youkilis is an a-hole) justifies the situation. Kind of reminds me of the Mike Greenwell using his face to stop Jim Rice's fist incident.

From what i've heard, it didn't have anything to do w/ manny not running into the foray in the 1st...

1) Manny was actually in the clubhouse working on his swing from the accounts i've heard

2) Youkilis has a strong tendency to get very angry after any AB that isn't positive (K, ground out, etc...anything really)

3) Manny and others agree that Youkilis does stupid shit after those outs and not only looks foolish, but annoys many team members...its one thing to show emotion, its another to get physically angry like that and start throwing stuff around after 2 outta 3 ABs...

4) Manny confronted youkilis to stop it...not sure what caused youk to finally flip on manny, but youk did just finish his AB and was pissed...probably bad timing

I don't think either incident was really a big deal.

Navarro simply laid the "Crash David" on "Nuke" Garza. It was over him calling pitches.

I Like Joe Maddon's response - they are brothers in a family. You know brothers will fight sometimes.

I also touched on this in today's cookie.

As for "why" - the media grabs onto anything they can spin as shocking because they don't have enough creativity to fill the space. If it's nothing, make something out of it. It's tabloid mentality.

I know the reason for the incident yesterday, I just thought it curious a much more serious issue got no attention, and something that happens almost every day is Armegeddon.
