Who's the most underrated player in the NBA?

Posted by DRE-LO

SSReporters recently had a great discussion/debate over who was the most overrated player in the NBA and there were so many players mentioned for various different yet viable reasons.

So now that we have that out of the way, who do you guys think is the most underrated player in the NBA? Who's that unsung hero? That guy who has proven himself without a shadow of a doubt but doesn't get the accolades he should.

Let the debate begin!

Beat me to it by 42 seconds JuT... What Miller has done with a 76ers team that everyone expected to pack it in, is remarkable. From a team projected to be in the lottery to a seventh seed that was up two games to one on the mighty Detroit Pistons, is a feat that is simply amazing. Yes it took a team effort, but who was the guy who got twelve guys to play together? Andre Miller is your answer...

a lot of people don't realize...they were in striking distance of the 5th seed and fell off near the end... they're by no means a premium team in the east, let alone the NBA...but they made strides...

I think Miller is very underrated, I was hoping the 76ers would kill off the possibility of another Spurs/Pistons final early....but alas, it was not to be.

Top 5 in assists and almost NO recognition. Who do you think helped get Chris Bosh all those points for the Raptors, and help lead him to the playoffs. Jose Calderon is a heck of a player. I can't wait to see what he does during the prime of his career.

Derek Fisher:

The man is an absolute professional, and has improved the back court of all three teams he has been with (LAL, Golden State and Utah). He has been the security blanket and ball handling upgrade the Lakers needed from Smush parker to make the jump they did this season. And the man is never mentioned as one of the top 10 PGs in the league when I think he's been between 8-10 for years. I say D-Fish.

That's a very good choice, Kelsdad. RUDY GAY is underrated. He was the best player on his team this year, but he isn't yet getting the attention he deserves because as LASPORTSBLOG said "he's just stuck in basketball purgatory." Funny, but PAU GASOL was in the same situation before the basketball gods saved him.

It’s much more difficult to name the most “underrated” player in the NBA than the most “overrated” because it requires strong reasoning. The choices for “overrated” were all stars, but a star can’t really be “underrated” by definition because stardom implies acclaim and notoriety, therefore, an “underrated star” is an oxymoron. This choice is most likely going to have to be a role player or a very young player.

MEHMET OKUR. He may only be the third option for the Jazz, but they wouldn’t have won 54 games without him. He serves a few crucial purposes for them. At 6’11 he spends most of his time behind the 3-point line where he’s a very good long-range shooter. This draws the opposing center away from the basket and creates space for the undersized CARLOS BOOZER. He also offers DERON WILLIAMS an opportunity to drive into the center-less lane or to kick the ball out to Okur for a jumper. He’s not a great rebounder, but his season average of 7.7 RPG is good considering his perimeter shooting responsibilities and he has bumped up his average to a whopping 13.6 RPG in the playoffs. He also averaged 14. 5 PPG during the season and also in the playoffs. Okur scores, rebounds, sets solid screens, and gives great effort every night. He remains obscure to the casual basketball fan, however, because he's from Turkey and plays in Utah, and that makes him terribly underrated.

Brad Miller was underrated for years, hopefully Okur won't fall into the same situation as Miller, being forggoten because you play in Sac-town or Utah.

On a team with Chauncey and Rip (not to mention the walking technical foul, Rasheed Wallace), Tayshaun still manages to hold his own, and even win a few games for them. Not bad for a guy who was undrafted (or something like that)

McGrady. He really still wasn't getting the credibility and respect he deserved even during the streak. His playoff exits for the Rockets have been due to less than spectacular support. I'd go into more depth here, but I doubt I'd make sense right now (barely slept in a couple weeks)

As far as the winning streak, T-Mac was underrated. With Yao Ming, he was still able to win quite a few more games. It's not easy to win 10 games in a row when someone as reliable as Yao Ming is out of the lineup. McGrady, as well as the rest of the team, had the will to keep the winning streak going. However, as far as the season, and how well he does in general, I wouldn't say that he's underrated. He hasn't made it past the first round of any playoff series. A 55-27 record after winning 22 games in a row is not that great of a record. Plus, his numbers are decreasing. 21.6 points/game (3 points less than last year, and 8+ points less than in the '03 season; they've been decreasing since then). He also turns the ball over a lot. It was less than it was last season (3.0-2.4), but it's still pretty compared to other forwards.

granted, I feel that he is always thought of not as a number 2 option or a number 1 option, but as an above average player. He might be on the decline, but without a lot of support, T Mac does a lot to ensure his team succeeds

Aldridge is a great choice, DRE-LO. He's very good on both ends of the floor and he has continued to improve in his two seasons. Too often he's been asked to play out of position, at center, but he always holds his own. Next season GREG ODEN will allow Aldridge to stay at power forward and he could really break out.
