[edit] AL Best Record (pct. points): Tampa Bay Rays

Read it, weep, Red Sox and Yankees fans.

The Rays win ANOTHER extra inning affair and beat the venerable Mo Rivera in the process. The Yankees are sinking, the Red Sox don't have the horses to pull away and the young Rays have learned how to win and more importantly, how to handle their business at home.

ASK yourself (because you haven't paid attention and don't know): How are they doing it?

PITCHING and DEFENSE.

Regardless of the Angels game tonight, the Rays have the best winning percentage in the AMERICAN LEAGUE!

It's only May and you're already sweating!!!

And the Rays still have the best minor league system in the game, the highest rated prospects and Oh, yeah... the first pick in next month's draft.

I'm not popping off about just this season... May or not;

Prepare for YEARS of Rays dominance!!!

And if the Rockies comeback and beat the Dbacks, the Rays will be tied, with three other teams, with the best record in all of baseball. Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd write.

Actually they are stacked with young talent. I was shocked with how many D'Rays showed up on fanstasy dratf spreadsheet. I had a feeling then that they'd have a good season. All this young talent has been like a Ray of sunshine for Florida baseball fans. (Did you really think a puntastic discussion would get ignored by me?!?!)

Manny, I'll buy you a Kazmir sweater if the Rays win the Division. Anyone else find it odd the URL for the Rays is STILL devilrays.mlb.com?

There was already a Rays.com - it's a restaurant that wouldn't sell the address to the team. (they tried) They use multiple urls now. Try TampaBayRays.com. And it's not odd, because they wanted to change the name for the 2006 season and MLB forcibly dragged their feet on the issue.

No. The Rays strengths have absolutely been pitching and defense.

We're talking about a team that was historically bad in both pitching AND defense last season. Now they are in the top 6 in most every team pitching and fielding categories in the majors. The Rays starters are tied with the Indians for the most scoreless outings of any staff (9) and also in shutouts (5).

They had TWO shutouts ALL of 2007.

And they also lead the AL in SB and, are 3-0 in extra inning games.

Anything? Like how I blamed everything on Robert Sarver a year before anyone else did?

Or how I told everyone that Amare's knee was fine when everyone else was fearing for his career?

Or how about when I said they WEREN'T going to win a championship in 2007-08... IN OCTOBER!!!???!!

I'm glad you can poke fun at my expense, but don't assume my words for me and don't spread lies.

I never said they WERE going to win it all. I only said I wish they would and that they very well could. I also noted many times that Human Jinx Grant Hill was on the roster...

Yes, I am sensitive about this. I might be the king of hyperbole, but I write objectively and honestly.

No harm intended, Manny. I just think it's funny how this is working out so far and you're scoreboarding it. I give you full props for manning up when the Suns got beat, and more importantly, full props for what the Rays are doing. I for one hope that that it lasts.

More good Rays news - who cares what happens in the standings today!!!

Today, Scott Kazmir was inked to a long term deal through 2012!!!

Now, with more pieces coming, a suddenly attractive, young team in place - Free Agents will actually clamor to sign and deals to get top notch players using pieces from the farm system can be made!@!!

A VERY BRIGHT future indeed!

I am actually believeing that this could happen, guys and gals. It's this little thing a high school math teacher once called parity. This might be the year they break out.

You actually believe it could happen? WHY do you do this to me?

Maybe your English teacher should have taught you about parity instead.

If it was "parity", all the teams would have the same payroll, the same record and all be tied for first.

It's not parity. The Rays have built from within in a very intelligent manner. Soon they will trade away some of their stock of talent and upgrade positions of weakness. Then they will fill the remaining gaps with developed talent and free agents.

It's not parity. It's called a "plan"

Because when they iced the "Devil" hell froze over, obviously.

Things change. It's the fundamental basis of existence on this plane. See: "The Curse of the Bambino", "Mel Gibson's popularity" or "the Soviet Union" for some prime examples...

If this takes you by surprise, you haven't been paying attention.

And the Twins are only a half game out of first place despite having bipolar pitching and an unpredictable defense. Livan Hernandez is the savvy vet of the starting rotation!! I normally wouldn't care, BUT THE TWINS ARE WINNING GAMES WITH THEIR OFFENSE, SCORING MORE THAN 2 RUNS A GAME, AND CAN COME BACK FROM A 5 RUN DEFICIT!!! I doubt if they make the playoffs they'd win a game, it just makes me so happy that they are actually hitting this year.
