Trivia!!! OK, "strikeout equals power" defenders... here's a simple trivia question for you...

Here's some subtle proof that strikeouts by power hitters is not conducive to winning...

[edit] Who is the ONLY player to have won a World Series in the same full season in which he struck out 135 or more times for that team?

(Here's a hint - he hit 12 more Home Runs the next season while dropping his K total by 19)

Better yet - Who are the only TWO players have even LOST a World Series in the same season while accumulating 135 or more K's in one season???

Only SEVEN players have had more than 128 K's and went to a World Series in the same season... FIVE players in the top 500 strikeout totals of ALL MLB hitters have won a World Series. (that total includes Cecil Fielder's half season with the Yankees in '96).

Yet, 6 of the top 25 HR seasons by a hitter led to World Series appearances. (4 wins)

If you think that strikeouts by hitters are not an indicator of failure - 1% of the top 500 strikeout seasons of all time leading to a World Series win says "think again"!

I've found these guys so far for players who have made it to the World Series and lost and still accumulated 135+ K's in the same season:

Mike Schmidt (1983 with 148 K's), Jim Thome (1997 with 146 K's), Jim Edmonds (150 K's in 2004), and Brad Hawpe (2007 with 137 K's).

I'm still trying to find that one guy, but I keep finding more guys who have lost the World Series and accumulated more than 135 K's.

Found him!

Steve Balboni, who struck out 166 times in 1985 with the Kansas City Royals, is the only player to strike out more than 135 times and still become a member of the World Series winning team.

But wait... according to Baseball Reference, he hit 36 homers that year, and then dropped his strikeout numbers down to 146 (20 less than the previous year), but also cut down on his homers too (36 homers to 29).

So, there's still another guy out there, I assume. So, I'll keep looking...

Darryl Strawberry is the other guy! He struck out 141 times during the 1986 season when the Mets defeated the Red Sox in the World Series. His strikeout numbers dropped from 141 to 122 (141-122=19), and his 1987 home run total increased from 27 to 39 (39-27=12).

Jorge Posada is another guy. He struck out 151 times in 2000 when they defeated the New York Mets. So that makes three...

Crap, I knew I'd mess thi one up...

The other guys who WON a World Series with 130+ Ks are... Devon White (1992 - 133), Reggie Jackson (1978 - 133 K's)

The guys who LOST a World Series with 135+ K's were Willie Stargell (1971 - 154 K's) and Jim Edmonds (2004, 150 Ks) and Mike Schmidt (1983 -148 K's)

Jose Hernandez also struck out 145 times in 1999, but was with the Chicago Cubs (striking out 101 times there) before he moved to the Atlanta Braves, where he'd strike out 44 more times. The Braves to the Yankees that year.

What about just two years ago? Curtis Granderson struck out 174 times in 2006 when the Tigers lost to the Cardinals in the World Series.

Gorman Thomas also struck out 143 times when the Brewers (back when they were in the AL) lost to the Cardinals.

Also, Troy Glaus struck out 144 when the Angels won the World Series in 2002.

When I added on to this question for the 3rd time, I knew that there was something wrong. ;)

The point of this "exercise":

Of the players to register the top 20 strikeout seasons in baseball history, only five of those players even APPEARED in a World Series!!! FOUR were ROLE players on their respective teams when they appeared in the W.S. - (#9 - Preston Wilson, 2007 Cardinals), (#8, #12 - Jose Hernandez, 1999 Braves), (#12 - Pete Incaviglia, 1993 Phillies), (#15 - Cecil Fielder, 1996 Yankees) and one guy who went on later in his career to cut his strikeouts and become the fiercest hitter in his league for a decade! (#19 - Mike Schmidt)

If you want to win, you better not have a guy with a ton of K's...

That's 100% true, Stiles. But first off, Ryan Howard and Adam Dunn share a whole quarter of the top 20 seasons with most strikeouts.

If you look at the top 20 PLAYERS though, it pretty much sums up the same thing you said:

  1. Mark Reynolds
  2. Ryan Howard
  3. Jack Cust
  4. Adam Dunn
  5. Bobby Bonds
  6. Jose Hernandez
  7. Preston Wilson
  8. Rob Deer
  9. Pete Incaviglia
  10. Jim Thome
  11. Cecil Fielder
  12. Mo Vaughn
  13. Mike Schmidt
  14. Richie Sexon
  15. Mark Bellhorn
  16. Mike Cameron
  17. Jay Buhner
  18. Jose Canseco
  19. Dave Nicholson
  20. Gorman Thomas

(For the most part) When you look at all 20 of those guys, you think to yourself, "Boy, if they struck out less (and played better defense) their teams probably would've done better."

And I agree, if you wanna win, you better not have a guy with a ton of K's. If you do, you better have a heckuva lineup.
