Topic of the Week: Becky Hammon and the US Olympics Head Coach Calling Her Unpatriotic

Posted by SSreporters

How about a little community discussion on a topic every week?

As you (BETTER) know, the Olympics in Beijing are a mere 1 1/2 months away. WNBA star guard for the San Antonio Silver Stars, Becky Hammon, has had that familiar dream of playing in the Olympics. The American was vying for a spot on the US squad, which had a roster of 23 players for coach Anne Donovan's side. For some reason or the other, Hammon was NOT chosen.

She is 31, keep that in mind because she'll be 35 for the 2012 games in London, so this is likely her last shot at being on the world stage. HOLD YOUR HORSES FOLKS!!! She signed a big deal with CSKA Moscow in Russia, was eligible for a Russian passport and became a naturalized citizen. Hammon has no ancestral ties to the nation but she's in! Congrats to her.

She's a Russian citizen, a passport, therefore, she can play for Russia! And she has that spot secured barring injury.

Hold on, Anne Donovan doesn't like that all that much. Donovan called her "unpatriotic" and other folks on the forums I'm reading are calling her a "traitor".

Now it's your turn, I've given you all of the important parts of the story, what is your opinion on this? Is Hammon a "traitor"? Is Donovan wrong to call her one?

And if you want my answer, if Donovan is commenting now about this, why didn't she put her on the team? It's common sense.

And that's just it. I'm okay with Hammon playing in Russia and trying to get on the Russian National team. If she wants that, it's her choice. If Donovan is really saying all of this, then why didn't Hammon get at least an invite?

Becky Hammon (and about 100 other WNBA players) get paid up to 10 times more in the Russian Women's Pro league than they do here. MOST of the stars play in Russia (and/or other proleagues, year-round). Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson all played on the same team. This is far less a concern for me than figuring out how Mike Piazza played for Italy in the Baseball World Cup in '06...

The town of Simsbury CT build a world class training facility for the RUSSIAN figure skating teams. A street full of million dollar houses where Oksana Baiul, Ekaterina Gordeeva, Sergei Grinkov, Ilya Kulick and the rest of the team all lived. This has been a 20 year thing. Come to the US, live free as "amateur" athletes, train and then when the Olympics come around, skate for Russia and kick our ass. Is THAT fair?

I don't really have a problem with her playing for Russia in the Olympics, and I certainly think the coach is being disingenuous when she calls her a traitor, given she failed to invite her to play for Team USA. But I still have trouble understanding Hammon's motivation to play for Russia. I understand she has an "Olympic dream", but isn't the dream to represent your country, not just any other random country that will have you?

Her motivation was

1) a chance to play and

2) a chance to play for more money (see my above, FIRST comment)

I think point two is the bigger factor. She is being paid quite nicely to play in Russia, both in her league and the Olympics. I think the talk of her dream of playing in the Olympics is lip service. As I said before, I don't think people dream of playing in the Olympics, but dream of playing for their country in the Olympics.

It's not like a national league, where the team you play for doesn't really matter. I might have always dreamed of playing for the Cowboys, but if (and yes, that is a huge, hypothetical if) the Eagles offered me a contract, I wouldn't hesitate to sign it. I'd just be happy to be in the NFL.

But in the Olympics, the country you are representing is more important than the Olympic stage. Again, I don't have a problem with it and certainly don't consider her a traitor, I just question the legitimacy of her "Olympic dream".

By all means she should do what she feels she has to do. But, I don't have to like it. If she wants to take citezenship in another country and represent them in the Olympics, that is her basic human right. But, I have every right to think it is a little selfish and feel a little betrayed by it. At the end of the day, I don't think she is worried about how I feel about the matter and I'm not concerned if my opinion hurts her feelings either.

I like this idea SSR.

This happens in other sports especially in soccer when you have players born in one ountry and playing for another, Patrick Vieira comes to mind. Born in Senegal but represents France in international competition. So if this move allows her to play internationally then good for her.

This happens in Figure Skating all the time. Not necessarily for the money, but for the opportunity. Tanith Belbin was rushed through US naturalization so she could compete with her American ice dancing partner in the Olympics. There was another skater where a similar thing happened, but for the life of me I can't remember his name.

The difference with the Ukrainian skaters training here and competing for Ukraine, is that they are not looking to compete for the US. They are not US citizens. And they usually bring their Ukrainian coaches with them.

Most of them are also not training as amateurs. The rules in Skating changed in 1994, pros are allowed to compete in the Olympics as long as they are skating in sanctioned events as well, thus maintaining their eligibility.

I have a huge problem with this. The olympics should be about sport and national pride. It's something that's bring people of every nation together. Something we all have in common. It should be about representing your nation.

Athletes should not be for sale to the highest bidder. Then they're no better than professionals.

Where's it stop? Next thing you know, there will be a bunch of Austrians skiing for Jamaica.

Until she was left off the roster.

She's 31, like I said, if she waits until she is 35 she'll either be retired or she would play but she would be past her prime.

I agree with it being about national pride, but she wanted to play in the Olympics and the US women's basketball team gave her the finger.

Should I say it again? She is 31 years old....she will most likely be past her prime when the games are in London. Selfish or not, she's a very good basketball player and I think it's a little bit bad that not only does she not represent her country but she can't play in the Olympics ever.

And shall I use the soccer perspective as well? If you've watched any minute of Euro 2008, how many Brazilians do you see playing on certain teams? Eduardo Da Silva is on the Croatian national team....are they all selfish?

Let's assume that she was left off the roster because "better" players were chosen. (This is an assumption. I would think that oftentimes, politics comes into play when making the selections.) I'm sorry that she wasn't good enough to make the cut. That doesn't give her the right to sell her skills on the open market.

The Olympics should be a competition of nations where each nation is represented by their own very best athletes.

Again, I'll bring up the soccer point because the sport is played in the Olympics.

Are Brazilian soccer players the most selfish people in the world? There are too many good players to make up 1 roster, so they go to Europe and one of them plays for the Japan national side. They're selling themselves to the open market and most of them are, get this, very good!

Is that selfish or not?

Are we talking about the Olympics or the Euro 2008, SSR? So lets try and keep on topic here. She is fulfilling a PERSONAL goal. This isn't Euro 2008 or a professional league, it is the Olympics. I don't care how old she is, or if it is her last chance to make the team. Your beef is with the wrong people. You should be asking why she was not invited to play on the American team instead of wondering why I, as an American, find it selfish for her to represent another country in the Olympics. It is pretty cut and dry to me. She doesn't care what country she plays for, she just wants to play in the Olympics. It is selfish and not what I think the Olympics are about.

And I brought up Euro 2008 because soccer is unofficially the world's sport, and it is after all, an international competition of 16 teams right? I'd bring up the World Cup as well.

Yes it is selfish if we are talking about the Olympics.

There is nothing wrong with fulfilling a personal goal. But, when you against the grain for your own personal desires you should expect to get some flak. Like I said in my original comment, if she wants to do this and the Olympic commitee is foolish enough to let her, then fine, but I don't have to be on board.

In answer to your question. Yes. Sorry Becky, you didn't make the cut. Getting cut is something that people have to deal with all the time.

I truly am sorry. I wish that everyone who wanted to compete in the Olympics, could. That's not reality. Reality is that only the best get to go.

The spirit of the olympic games is that nations can meet on a national stage and compete on equal ground. The best of each nation competing against each other. It is about national pride and the fellowship of competition that crosses all borders. By representing someone other than your home nation, a person is going against the spirit of the games.

To put it another way, she wasn't good enough to make the cut in America so she went out and found a team where she was more "elite" and was good enough to make the cut.

I used to follow Becky Hammon's WNBA career regularly when she was playing for the New York Liberty and I resented the team for trading her away. There was something about her that made me enjoy watching her play even though the team was on decline. No, it's not because she is considered in some circles a hottie. She's become a great basketball player and is someone you can really come out and watch her perform on the court.

Following her trade to San Antonio, I only paid any serious attention to her first game against the Liberty and then her return here to New York. Since then, I had lost interest just as I have for the WNBA. I used to be a fan, but I can care less now. Maybe it was my disenchantment for the Liberty trading her, who knows. For the first seven years of so, Liberty basketball was entertaining and the fans could identify with the team. I hardly see that anymore.

At first, I was thinking Becky was being a traitor for going to play for the Russian national team, but after reading up on what led to her decision, I cannot blame her. What the hell was USA Basketball thinking? She may not have won a WNBA championship, but Becky's an All-Star caliber player and one of the best in the league. USA Basketball not inviting her to at least try to make the team is a disgrace.

All the power to her for playing for Russia.

I found these articles interesting (not that agree with all of what was said in them) from the following sources...

The Oregonian: "As for Me, I'm Rooting for Becky Hammon"
The Virginian Pilot: "She stayed true to her Olympic dream. Now she's called a traitor."
