Topic for Discussion: Best Current NFL QB

Posted by False Prophet

Here's an idea I had. Since there's not a lot going on that a majority of the users here give a damn about, lets just have open discussions about unanswered questions involving sports. I'm a football junkie, so let's get this topic rolling.

Three that I see worthy of the title:

Brady - Single Season TD leader, coming off of an insane season, leader of the best offense in the League. Some see him as a system QB, or a QB that became great because of Randy Moss (although adding Randy Moss to any decent team will make their QB look like a star. He's the fastest player in the game, bar none)

Manning - Traditional "student of the game" type of player. His technical skills are almost unrivaled, but did not perform up to expectations when injuries took out his top targets.

Garrard - Very precise QB. Absurdly outrageous TD-INT ratio last year. He's likely to regress, but if he doesn't, it's gonna look like a Madden Game with him. Everything I hoped VY to be and more.

For once, I'm actually not sure who I'd put at no. 1.

In May?

Okay, let me get my football cap on.

Peyton Manning over Brady. I think Manning is actually improving now that he doesn't have Harrison but rather Craphonso Thorpe to swing the ball to, he's working better with less than great receivers. He befuddles defenses like no other, he like Tom makes precision passes but how often do you see Manning throw into double coverage?

Brady has the luxury of a dream team of receivers (Stallworth was a misfit and you know it), he can chuck it up and his guys will catch it. I must admit he puts up dazzling numbers and has the rings, but I think Manning has a slight edge because of his, as you said, technical skills.

I'd agree. If you evaluate the QBs on their technical ability, Manning is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else

Randy Moss isn't the fastest player in the game...in fact, he may not even be the fastest player on the pats...

The guy can jog down the field faster than most DBs can sprint. He may not show it, but if you had a sprint race between the fastest NFL players, I'd put my money on him. Who else could be faster on the Pats? Welker has quickness, not speed. Think Olineman. They can move their feet quick than most WRs, but they can't run at all. Welker has amazing ability to move his feet and to use his soccer skills to work around DBs, but he's definitely not the one I'd want running any route over 30 yards

If Moss isn't the fastest guy, who is? Ellis Hobbs, maybe... FP, did you see this? I can't even imagine the kind of soccer player Welker could be...

welker was a soccer player. That's why he's got those sick moves.

Oh please, one Super Bowl-winning drive (in which he made more than a few mistakes which were not capitalized upon) does not mean that Eli even belongs in the same conversation as Peyton...

Eli HAS to be consistent. He has to be to be considered with Peyton and Tom. He hasn't shown a ton of improvement over the years, either...he is one miracle catch away from being in the exact same position with NFL fans as he was before 2007.

NO QB with 20 INTs in a season is worthy of being in this discussion unless the put up over 60 TDs in the NFL

No Matt Hasselbeck?

He's sorta like adding Terry Bradshaw into the best QB discussion...he's not gonna win, but he should be mentioned...

Plus his receivers are pretty bad...

If we're including Hasselbeck, what about a healthy McNabb?

The issue with Hassellbeck is he's never been a Championship QB (as a starter, I don't remember if he won a SB when he was with GB), and he has never been a phenominal QB. He's the type of guy that if you were to do a madden style fantasy draft that you look for in Round 2/3 because you know he's about on par with the bottom end of the Round 1 guys, and you can get a better player without compromising your team at the QB position. He's got average WRs, mainly b/c they have like 3 2nd or 3rd options, so they're WR corps is deep in terms of ok players, but without a good WR.

Also, I think Drew Brees and Carson Palmer could at least be in the discussion. (And Romo... I'm not sure)

No Davis, because he hasn't played a full season since 2004, and I'm convinced that he's not what he was/could have been. In terms of best career, he's probably one of the top 3, but not in terms of current ability. besides, health ought be a factor in determining who's better.

I find it interesting you bring up Palmer and Romo, b/c I'm convinced they're polar opposites.

Romo's a more mobile QB who looks amazing cuz he's got so much talent around him. Palmer doesn't look that great b/c the Bengals are horrible.

Brees? What's good about a 28:18 TD-INT ration?

Palmer looked as good as anybody three years ago when the Bengals made the playoffs.

but he doesn't now despite being a top 5 QB in terms of ability. It's because of his team. Put Romo on the Bengals and he'd be just another QB. Put Palmer on the Cowboys and I'll betcha John Madden will have found his new love

That's why I said I wasn't sure about Romo, who's also a bit of a flake on top of everything else. Palmer is the prototype as far as I'm concerned, but he needs to cut down on the picks to reach his full potential. Brees is better than his raw stats would indicate last year -- he has shown that he can put up great numbers in the past, and who else do you know that could put up 4423 yards and a 67.5 Comp% with no running game behind him, and everybody in the entire stadium knows he's throwing? Frankly, I'm damn impressed that he only threw 18 picks.

maybe, I just have an issue with QBs that turn the ball over so much. You very well might be correct, but I just am not sure that he's all that great

Keep in mind, the Saints defense was so bad last year, they fell behind so often Brees had to throw ALL THE TIME. Plus, Deuce McAllister got hurt, and Reggie Bush isn't exactly threatening to be the next Gale Sayers or anything. When you have to throw a lot, you're naturally going to turn it over more.

He didn't really turn it over that much, given that he threw a staggering 652 times (74 more times than anyone else). His 2.8 Int% was only 0.1% higher than Peyton Manning's...
