Top 10 RB's of All Time

Posted by Crackajg

I'm writing a Top 10 RB's of all time article and while most of the ten are no brainers there are about three or four spots that are up for grabs depending on what you take into account.

My question for you all is, besides the obvious players such as Sanders, Brown, Smith, Dickerson, etc. -- who rounds out your top 10? Marshall Faulk because of his unparalleled receiving skills? Or what about Jerome Bettis who was a steady beast in regards to touchdowns. And how much do we take into account L.T.'s accomplishments so far. Any and all thoughts/comments are appreciated. Thank you.

Honestly...a smart move would be to DQ any current player...this way there isn't an argument.

Its hard to judge someone without a complete body of work.

For example, right now Tom Brady isn't much more than Terry Bradshaw, but give him a few more years to put up stats and he'll probably be considered better, especially if he wins a 4th...

I agree with JuT, although wouldn't be fair even with 2 seasons remaining to call L.T. the greatest RB of his decade ('01-'10)?

As far as Faulk...I'm a huge fan, but you can see even with the Colts he was a force...and those teams sucked

All good names, Cheezer. Let me throw in a couple. Warrick Dunn, William Andrews, Earl Campbell, Herschel Walker.

Rather than be snarky and critical, why not add some value to the conversation by giving your top ten?

Truth be told, I had a hard time coming up with ten off the top of my head. I said that it was just a few names to get the ball rolling.

Jackson is one of the best running backs I have ever seen play. Martin never really looked like much, but if you look into it a little bit, I think you'll find that he a had a very good career.

Bo Jackson was just an incredible athlete, he deserves to be in the discussion

No no, when Kelsdad and I agree nothing needs to be explained. It's just fact, accept it. Curtis Martin? Come on. Bo Jackson? Injury shortened careers can get you into the HOF but not on an all-time top ten list.

Earl Campbell, Floyd Little

There is no denying Walter Payton's place on this list, his accomplishments speak for themselves. However, it must be reminded he is not the best BEARS running back of all time.

That honor belongs to Gale Sayers.

Sayers was incredible, but before my time so I never saw him live. I will always be a fan of Sweetness. Not sure about Little. I never saw him play so I can't be any judge. I liked Campbell too. He was a favorite of mine when I was a kid and he definitely belongs in this conversation.

I look forward to the article, because, like all of these GOAT conversations, the many opinions make for interesting discussions.

The article is the "Top RB's of All time", not the "Top RB's I've seen."

Ya Campbell is right there too, talk about a guy who didn't need moves to run effectively. And I do think Martin deserves consideration, despite that B.S. tone you use. A little statistical back up for my Martin nomination (which by the way I think on the list he would be 7th or 8th:
  • 11 Straight 1000 yard seasons
  • 14,101 career yards at 4.0 yards per carry
  • 90 Rushing TDs
  • 4th all time in rushing yards
  • 1995 AFC Rookie of the Year
  • 5 Pro Bowls
  • 5 Time All Pro
  • 2004 AFC Rushing Title (1,697 yards)

Take away his worse season (2005 735 yards, 5 TDs 3.3 YPC) and his best season (2004 1,697 yards, 12 TDs, 4.6 YPC) and he ran for just over 11,000 yards for 73 TDs and about 4.2 YPC. How can you be serious not considering him for the top 10?

Sayers was an unreal talent, but like Jackson injuries (durability) cut their careers short and kept them from reaching the greatness they were each destine for.

First, LA, I'm a Jets fan. I know far more about Curtis Martin than you do, or I care to admit. He is, however, a mid level RB fortunate enough to play in an offensive scheme which was designed around him. In the same situation, a GREAT running back would have dominated, he would have had a half dozen 1600 yard seasons instead of just one. Martin was a good player, a fun player to watch, but he is in no way a top ten alltime RB. I have a tough time putting him top 20.

I think your jets fandom may have you overexposed to him. I think you'd have a tough time naming 20 RBs better then Curtis Martin... actually - that could be an interesting article.

Not only could I name 20 RB's better than Martin, I can make a solid point that he isn't even top three alltime on the Jets.
