The Rays Are Going to Win the AL East, No, Really.

Just putting it out there, because I feel like being quasi-bold. I guess you could call it Cass's Rant for the day.

No, this is not a reverse jinx. This is simply my observation that this is the way a baseball team should be playing in a pennant race...not trying to do too much, just playing their game and taking it a game at a time. I've been waiting for the pin to drop, and it hasn't.

Since I can't take anymore of Favre, and because I have nothing better to do when the heat index is 105 (seriously), I flipped over to watch the 9th inning of the Rays and Indians. Indians are up, 7-4.

I'm thinking, sweet, Rays are gonna lose, Sox have the chance to pick up a game.

The Rays score 6 runs, without making an out, to win, 10-7. Couple of doubles, infield hit, a 2-run homer from Gabe Gross and and a 3-run walkoff shot from Carlos Pena. They scored those 6 runs in less than 10 minutes.

There is a certain giddiness about these guys. They have It. Like the idiocy of the '04 Red Sox, without the stupidity. They're just fun. That's the only word I can use to describe them. Sheer, unadulterated, baseball fun. They have the Rookie of the Year (not debatable), a burgeoning BAMF in Matt Garza, a still very young Scott Kazmir, and a bunch of other guys who you don't expect a lot out of, but play extremely well together.

Even if the Sox miss the playoffs (I am accepting this as a legitimate possibility), as a baseball fan, I will thoroughly enjoy watching these guys in October.

Assumably you're suggesting that they didn't do enough (anything) at the deadline and that will kill them at the end...

Namely a big bat and a left handed reliever?

My thoughts are:

A big bat could still clear waivers

As for relievers? Same scenario...Scott Eyre comes to mind...perhaps to even block the sox

Additionally, all things holding equal for the season, I think their rotation matches and beats any other AL East rotation. That being said, both the yankee and sox rotations are significantly more experienced (as are their entire teams)

I'd be most concerned that they flame out...though when rosters expand to 40, it'll be interesting to see who they bring up

I'm probably putting too much stock into team chemistry and such, but watching the game today (and given the Indians relief pitching stinks), they've got something. Maybe they're just on a hot streak...who knows. I just have a gut feeling.

I guess it's a spark thing...every playoff team needs a spark. It could be Bay for Boston, it could be Nady for NY. It IS Longoria in Tampa Bay, and hell, they could get another spark if Price comes up and pitches well. I don't see the same attitude on a night-in, night-out basis with the Sox I see with the Rays (I can't speak for the Yanks, since I don't watch their games much).

I figured a flame out would come by now, that's why they're so interesting to me. They had their tough stretch, but they didn't let it get to them...

Team chemistry is the most underrated intangible in any sport, especially baseball. Just ask Terry Francona.

The Rays had a bit of an incident yesterday, and rebounded with a win, which is a good sign.

I admire the Rays for not hitting the panic button with David Price, and considering they've already lost one minor league stud pitcher to Tommy John this year, the Rays may stick to their original plan and keep him down all year regardless.

Now tell me something I didn't know... in Spring Training.

If you want to tell all your Red Sox loving friends that the moment "it" occured was when Cuckoo Crisp charged the mound...

But I'll quietly maintain that the seeds to this team's success were sewn long before 2008...

As for the suddenly emboldened Yankees fans (who seem to forget that their team by default SUCKS)... all I can say is "Ha HA HA HAAAA!!!.... ok, sure, whatever you say"

Since you've predicted the Patriots would lose in the Super Bowl, the Rays would win the division, and many other things, can you put the Philly sports fans out of their misery? ;-)

A combination of both, actually. The Rays belief they have enough to win it is admirable, but also unrealistic, especially compared to what the other teams did.

Bay and Nady have both helped their new teams win games, they could be helping to win games in Tampa. Brian Fuentes is still in Colorado, the Rays could have had him for a Double A pitcher.

The Rays leave today for a ten game road trip to Seattle, Oakland and Texas, returning home on August 18th. I'm betting the Rays aren't in first place when they get back.

And as far as what happened today goes, yeah, six runs is impressive, but they beat Cleveland, the team with the second worst record in the American League, and with the worst road record. I'd be more concerned they gave up seven runs, to be honest.

Pinstriped colored glasses can make you believe anything, huh?

The Yankees and Red Sox may have made deals. Hell, they might even have become magically better through said deals (If Bay and Nady are so good, why did Pittsburgh suck so much?)

Brian Fuentes isn't going to be the final piece to win any team a pennant.

Don't get caught up in staring at the current page of the book (trading deadline) without considering everything from cover to cover (season). The Rays already have a "team". They DIDN'T 'need' to make a move to improve. They didn't need addition or subtraction to improve their mathematical chances.

Why trade for a bat when the ones you have will start heating up (Pena, Longoria, Upton, Floyd)? Why trade for arms when the ones you have PUT YOU in first place to begin with? If the Rays really need a left handed arm I think David Price will suffice...

You make moves when you have to. If you don't have to WHY make moves? Oh, yeah... I'm talking with a Yankees fan here... How's Joba working out for you? Sidney Ponson ready for September?

Just save yourself the hopes and dreams and get the golf clubs ready, Jeter.

Anybody's welcome to go through my archives and find where I said Joba Chamberlain was nothing but fat kid with bad mechanics and would eventually get hurt. Shouldn't be too hard, I've been saying it since I've been here.

Are the Yankees going to a four man rotation without the "fat kid"?

I know that trades are fun and all but the Yankees didn't make moves that are going to put them over the top. They got and old, broken down Pudge and an overrated Nady and this helps them how? I thought we went over "team chemistry" up there^^^

Pudge + Jeter + ARod + Abreau + Giambi + Damon + Girardi x Hank Steinbrenner = TEAM CHEMISTRY???

Yeah, I'm gonna need some really good PCP to believe that one.

One thing we can't disagree about is the final standings. And that the Red Sox suck nearly as much as their fans.

I know many of you guys think that I will saying this to reverse jinx this as well, but I seriously think the Rays are going to win the division as well.

These guys are seriously unstoppable, and I jumped on the Rays' bandwagon the first month of the baseball season after realizing what these guys can actually do. Every, single one of these guys deserve recognition... some more than others *cough* Longoria *cough, but we're looking at a team with a bunch of guys who some baseball fans had no idea that they'd even battling for 3rd place, never mind 1st.

They will definitely knock out one of the "big" teams in the AL East. And you're correct, Meg, 100%. They're definitely fun to watch, but I think of them more as just a fun baseball team to watch. I don't know how to explain it, but although these guys are a storybook team, they're also... I don't know what it is. Maybe it's just the fact that they're so different compared to other teams.

They guys who were considered good back in '06, like Scott Kazmir and Carl Crawford (the only former All-Stars on the roster entering the '08 season for the Rays) aren't relied on so much because the entire team can get the job done. Guys like Dioner Navarro, Akinori Iwamura, Matt Garza, Andy Sonnanstine... all these guys are good, talented players who stepped up their games and played key roles in the Rays' team this year. Kazmir missed the first month of the season, and the Rays still managed to go above .500 without him. Carl Crawford isn't doing as well as he usually does: .271 batting average (compared to his last 3 seasons when hit above .300), and his OBP, SLG, and many more offensive categories aren't as good either. However, [at least] a few batters always manage to come up big and get the win for the Rays.

Their bullpen is lights out, and is another factor why they win a lot of ballgames as well. They win those close one-run ballgames, which is why they're doing so well in the standings.

I can see why they're doing so well. They're definitely going to take that division, and we're going to see them in October. As far the playoffs go, I'm not sure what's going to happen, but I guarantee they're going to win the AL East.
