The Front Page

When someone writes an article, they recieve 100 AGM points. When that article reaches the fron page, they recieve 100 more points. If someone comments three times, edits something twice, and votes for 5 things, they have outscored the article that hit the front page. It just doesn't seem right to me; a quality front page article should recieve more AGM point credentials (or the other stuff should be less).

It may lead to more articles (quailty articles hopefully) being posted here. And it will reward good writers. This is just an idea I had.

See the scoring system here.

Any thoughts?

maybe we need to go back to the conversation about bumping up the number of votes an article needs in order to hit the front page

You darn well know that most of those 3 sentence articles were Alt. Title Games, Caption Contests, and ESPN debates. Others, were just be not knowing the site being a newbie and all :) Come on now, if anything, you should be talking about the increasing number of these "articles".

currently, the promoted articles run at a pretty good pace IMO...

the problem is quality of articles versus what is interesting...

I mean, anyone could have posted a "Mitchell report is here" article with a few sentences and some notes and get it promoted...

We keep a pretty good eye on the publish score. I'm not against changing it, but it's hard to say that bumping it up is going to make a difference. And tinkering with the points table -- e.g. 500 for a published article -- just makes stuff messy.

There was an article last week (I don't remember which, sue me) which got a lot of votes and comments which Dan moved to the Lockerroom. Did the people who voted lose their points, since you can't vote for an LR?

I think this goes back to the case I've been trying to make for a long time and that's to cut voting down to one point. Now you don't have people voting for every article just to get the 10 free points and you won't see shitty articles get promoted.

I also think that you should still get the 100 points for posting the article and maybe like 500 more for having that article promoted.

Both of these things will bring more quality articles out of everyone, and will keep the bad articles from reaching the main readers, which makes the site seem more respectable.

Why don't we just decrease the amount of points for comments? 135 for each comment? That's not right at all. Whoever is in a blog will win the Weekly Points report, except when Roblefko has a project to finish, and he gets like... 300,000 for the week.

The problem with changing point totals is that it's retroactive. So a lot of people will lose points if we reduce the total amt.

The biggest problem to me is that with the current system there are too many "articles" that get promoted that probably shouldn't be. I don't have a high total of articles written because when I do right one, I put a lot of time and effort into it. Then, when I see my story up there with five-liners with bad grammar, I think it degrades the credibiltity of my article and everyone else's who put in a lot of effort. Kelsdad said it perfect: promote writing, not talking. But that's just me...

The real problem to me is not the system, it's the users. Us. You heard me. Aren't WE the people voting for lousy articles for 10 points? Aren't WE the people who put up 150 comments to get a lousy article promoted? Hmmmm...

as someone who talks a lot, i agree...

but changing the voting won't help. Dan (as if his head somehow is in the sand) is right, the publish score won't change a thing, either people want to talk about it (leading to votes...romi, lookin at you ; - ) ) or they don't...there's a lot of articles that have a lot of effort and talent, but don't get the buzz for one reason or another (PittsburghGunny's soccer stuff for example).

i guess if we had an article police, it would be better, but no one should be charged with deciding, its unfair...(not even the founders, whom, and maybe i'm wrong about this, don't want to do that because AGM is - "All Sports, All You"...that would defeat the purpose...

As I mentioned before, some articles are total BS, but others are things like "Kevin Garnett was traded to the Celtics" with a news brief and a few notes...maybe 3 or 4 paragraphs...is that an article or was it mindless dribble mostly paraphrased from an AP article?

but it surely is interesting and talked about

its a problem, but there's no clear answer...

Yeah, I agree with you the problem is the users voting for everything to get points, or voting for articles just because it generates a good discussion (I thought that's why the locker room was invented). The only way I can think of to fix it is to decrease point totals for votes. But I can see that there are problems with that too. I guess the 'Chair can never be perfect... :)

yeh, but news as always obscure and no one really wanted to write it...

you should get credit for writing up a 3 paragraph thing...

maybe thats what the in the news thing is for...because there's not much else to say...

this is where the users need to start getting in on this...a lot of people claims the founders should do this or that but, and once again, let me know if i'm wrong, that they (the founders) would rather let the community run as is (and just keep it from getting too far off course)...

so we decide, essentially, what is and what isn't and how it works...

and (hopefully) as the community grows...well, it'll get harder to manage...

there's lots of kinks to a community...i guess you just gotta hang on...

You should get votes for contributing to the site. (Original) writing. Editing. Uploading pictures. Comments are not necessarily a contribution, at least not in the same context the article is. Especially when it isn't related to the article. Case in point, Manny v. Tyrone a couple weeks ago. A 400 comment pissing contest. How many votes they each get for that one?

I agree JuT, it has become a lot about battles for points. For me, I really don't care about the points, I just care about talking sports and having the site be a good as it can be. Oh and I don't agree with Christof: I think the straight up points are a lot easier then the old method. I never totally understood how the old way worked...

In principle, I agree...but then you start getting into what is an article and what isn't and then things get moved and so on and so forth...

KD, you and I and a lot of others don't like it...

I agree, I think having 2 or 3 paragraphs and a link is lame and draws traffic away...but then again, its how you acquire users too...

but back to my original point...it seems simple now, but as things change and grow, it'll get grayer...

re. Do comments count?

The problem with removing all points for comments is that sometimes I contribute to a subject via the comments. Rather than write an article of my own on the same subject, I will do a little research, gather some information, and contribute via the comments.

Some people may wish to be rewarded for this effort. If you remove comment points, the comment quality will degrade and the number of article on a given subject will increase. For example, someone could start and article that starts "Piggybacking on the Hawks Nest series, Holgram has agreed to return to the Seahawks..."

Or they could put a comment in the Hawks Nest Thread.

Personally, I would like the ability to give an article the anti vote. . .

Getting back on point... 100 points for a promoted article does not seem like enough... if it were like 500 points for a premoted article, more people would sit down and write (or thats my theory atleast) Personally, if I am trying to score points (like last week when I challenged SS to the weekly scoring contest) I rather sit around editing and commenting stuff than writing a quality article...

Here's the solution, bring back the News section, and have a section off to the side of the main page that lists the most recent news articles. Back when we had a news section, we didn't have the problems quite as much
