The ArmchairGM Code of Conduct is Now Up

Posted by JuTMSY4

So, some of you might have been wondering what I've been up to for the last few days. Well, actually it wasn't the CoC, I've just been sick and busy and celebrating some awesome Irish Holiday.

If you remember, we discussed the draft here

But, today I utilized some free time to analyze everyone's comments and make a final version of the Code of Conduct. Please do not attempt to edit the CoC. This is the final draft and its not meant to be altered in a substantive way (there's a clause in the CoC for editing though). So have a look. If you find a typo, please either message me privately or fix it yourself, but not that it is not supposed to be edited in a substantial way. If you have a serious issue, please let me know and I'll bring it to light dependent on the issue. I hope I've been pretty receptive to everyone's ideas, but if you have concerns, please let me know.

With that said, I leave it to a final tally. Anyone who disagrees with the policy, please feel free to speak now (although, I'd rather alter it than delete it all together).

Therefore, as the one of the writers, I'll consent to the Code of Conduct:

I have one thing to say about this: What would be the punishment for something like Frank did and spew personal and sensitive information of another user (Manny)? Would there be any?

it was deleted (wonder why?), but i remember that

well, manny made that stuff about his brother fairly clear at other moments...

anyways...it wasn't the personal info so much as the connotation...plus it was clearly what we'd consider trolling...

I like how Justin is "the writer" of the CoC...like he did all the work himself. Damn Colonists ;)

I think you could call him the Timothy Matlack of the CoC. ;-)

Oh, and if you don't get that, look him up or watch National Treasure.

Seems OK to me. I'm still concerned about checks and balances. I'm also concerned about some of the vagueness and the lack of a statute of limitations on previous offenses.

I'm also concerned about the requirements for being a sysop. Now that we've empowered the position, I have concerns that some of our younger members do not have the "life" experience to ba able to successfully handle and mediate disputes or deal with some of the stronger personalities they may run into.

I've been here less than a year, but my experience is that our sysops are dedicated, motivated individuals so maybe our seleciton process is working.

I humbly request that the older Sysops mentor our younger ones. We don't want to put them in a situation that they can't handle. Or even a situation where they feel too uncomfortable.

At the same time, they should be a little uncomfortable, that's how we grow as individuals.

All-in-all, good job guys.

That's a really valid point...well said...

You've brought up some valid points...the statue of limitations is a very interesting and tricky point...but my hope is that people merely consider the past...I'm not sure...

My advice would be to utilize the final article to edit any part you're concerned about...my only additional advice...be careful, because you'll end up doing the bulk of the work ; - )

I think that part of it is that it has to be left intentionally ambiguous. Otherwise you get the legal loophole types constantly mentioning time and the severity of previous transgressions. At that point you hamstring the Sysops and founders and they have no room to maneuver.

The key is to have good checks and balances so there is no abuse of power (Absolute power corrupt absolutely). The sysops need to work together and be smart. Work together for the good of the community and we'll be all right.

As a user, I trust first.

I absolutely agree with you on your first comment, Cheezer. Being 16, I'm pretty (I guess you could say) easily persuaded, due to the fact that I'm not older. That's why when there is a huge dispute or anything like that, I just back off, send a message to any of the older admins and let them handle the situation. I'm an admin for other reasons, like deleting pages and stuff like that. ;)
