Sportsbook Solicitation "Articles"

Posted by Cheezer

OK folks. I, for one, have had it. I would rather see no new articles than see the bookie articles all the time.

As far as I know, we have no official policy with regards to gambling solicitation. I have spent a lot of time just weeding through the "articles" and removing the the hyper links to the gambling sites. I have left the articles there because they really aren't in formal violation of anything.

Is there value in allowing them? Do they bring in new users? Should we just delete any article that contains a link to sportsbook site?

Cheezer your dedication in getting rid of those annoying links is admirable. Me, I couldn't be bothered to do all that work. I do not think that the gambling links bring anything of value to the site so let the fine members here decide what they will with them, ditch 'em that's okle-dokle with me.

First off, I would like to congratulate you again on becoming ArmchairGM's newest admin.

Secondly, yes, I'm sick an tired of all of these "articles", as well. I appreciate the fact that you take the time to remove the hyperlinks to the gambling sites.

Everything you said is true. The articles don't really violate anything. So, what's the problem? Well, the problem is, 1) nobody reads them, 2) it is becoming more and more like a spamfest, 3) It's burying all the articles that people create and work so hard on (from scratch, not from other sites).

I would delete them, as well. However, the problem is it would [kinda] make us look like hypocrites. We're all for freedom of speech here and stating our opinions, right (as long as they don't violate the code of conduct). Has anyone warned them about the articles being deleted. I feel that if we give them a warning and they put the articles in the "Hot Links" section, then they should be fine. But they haven't. I know Steel Town has talked to me about it, and he's definitely irate about this... as well as many others.

In conclusion, I feel that we should warn them again (just in case they forgot), sorta tell them what to do by putting their articles in the "Links" section. Or else, we will delete the articles.

Some have been put there by SPAM bots. Not even registered users.

This is not a free speech issue: the articles are nothing more that free advertisements for the gambling websites. Deletion is a very reasonable policy.

It makes sense.

Has anyone talked to this user who keeps making these articles? I don't think it's right if we just delete them without warning. I mean, I know, for an active user, it should be enough to just look in the lockerroom once in a while to see all this hatred spewed at the articles... but I would like a clear warning.

If anyone hasn't, I'll be sure to send him a clear (pubic) message.

The gambling articles are clearly spam, and there is a rule on spamming.

Unless you're trying to get Pete Rose to get an Armchair account, there is no good reason for them.

Again, whats' the most important thing..the credibility of the site, right?

For the most part, they're spam. The links are a dead giveaway. If they write articles about gambling, then link to a gambling blog, then that might be fine. But if they link to a site that profits specifically from gambling, then it's spam.

A rule of thumb for the admins might be: "Did the writer of this get paid to write/post this?" If so, it's spam.

Cheezer Im with you, I would rather see nothing then some pointless piece of shit article about handicapping baseball or horse racing or whatever. If anything if a new user did come around and saw that they may think that this whole site is nothing but a ploy to advertise gambling and scare them off.

I have no problem with deleting them. I don't even look at them, so I probably wouldn't even notice their absence.
