Should Erin Andrews Be the Main Topic of a Brewers-Cubs Recap?
You know how they say journalism is changing? Let's hope it doesn't continue to go in the direction of sportswriter Mike Nadel's latest game recap.
Nadel throws in a few bits about the game, but he prefers to focus on Ms. Andrews' choice of attire, grabbing Alfonso Soriano's arm, saying hello to Aramis Ramirez and the Cubs and Lou Piniella's, ahem, favorable reaction to Andrews' presence.
Let me say that I like Erin Andrews. I think she's good at her job, she's very cute and has put up with Bruce Pearl suggestively grabbing her and God knows what at her duties at the College World Series. The sort of thing Nadel talks about maybe happens a lot, but she's probably used to it. Recently, she turned me off a bit when she got exceedingly flirty backstage at the ESPYs. But all in all, she's very professional.
No one has gone so far to point out some of the things she has to face, or some of the things behind the scenes. No one has gone so far as to make the sexiness of a media member the main focus of an article. No one has gone so far as to say something like this:
Did she really feel playing the sexpot was necessary to practice journalism? She is good-looking enough and has enough of a high-profile job that she would get plenty of interviews and attention even if she showed up in a burlap sack.
One thing for sure: There was a discernable buzz in the Cubs' clubhouse Wednesday before a pitch ever was thrown -- and that buzz had nothing to do with the anticipation of another huge victory over a division rival.
I'm not much of a feminist, but when someone decides to oogle Erin Andrews, and talk about others oogling Erin Andrews, and pass it off as a column, I shake my head. Exhibit A as to why I want to go into producing. Although this would probably not happen to me, as I'm significantly shorter than Erin, have ridiculously curly brunette hair and a red birthmark smack on the middle of my nose...
UPDATE: Upon further review, Nadel has some good points (click on the game recap link, it's a Deadspin interview) and I thinkhe just made people angry with some his word choices. I emailed Nadel and he explained the article further.

I can respect that. For a while, sports broadcasting saw this (see MNF sideline reporters), but generally ignored it because its basically a crock of shit, but in the advent of blogging, it only becomes more clear what people want. I'd argue web 2.0 is (clearly) shifting the way ESPN (and others) do business, and for better or for worse, they're still learning to cope with it...
Integrity was overrated anyways...
