Should Erin Andrews Be the Main Topic of a Brewers-Cubs Recap?

Posted by MegECass110

You know how they say journalism is changing? Let's hope it doesn't continue to go in the direction of sportswriter Mike Nadel's latest game recap.

Nadel throws in a few bits about the game, but he prefers to focus on Ms. Andrews' choice of attire, grabbing Alfonso Soriano's arm, saying hello to Aramis Ramirez and the Cubs and Lou Piniella's, ahem, favorable reaction to Andrews' presence.

Let me say that I like Erin Andrews. I think she's good at her job, she's very cute and has put up with Bruce Pearl suggestively grabbing her and God knows what at her duties at the College World Series. The sort of thing Nadel talks about maybe happens a lot, but she's probably used to it. Recently, she turned me off a bit when she got exceedingly flirty backstage at the ESPYs. But all in all, she's very professional.

No one has gone so far to point out some of the things she has to face, or some of the things behind the scenes. No one has gone so far as to make the sexiness of a media member the main focus of an article. No one has gone so far as to say something like this:

Did she really feel playing the sexpot was necessary to practice journalism? She is good-looking enough and has enough of a high-profile job that she would get plenty of interviews and attention even if she showed up in a burlap sack.

One thing for sure: There was a discernable buzz in the Cubs' clubhouse Wednesday before a pitch ever was thrown -- and that buzz had nothing to do with the anticipation of another huge victory over a division rival.

I'm not much of a feminist, but when someone decides to oogle Erin Andrews, and talk about others oogling Erin Andrews, and pass it off as a column, I shake my head. Exhibit A as to why I want to go into producing. Although this would probably not happen to me, as I'm significantly shorter than Erin, have ridiculously curly brunette hair and a red birthmark smack on the middle of my nose...

UPDATE: Upon further review, Nadel has some good points (click on the game recap link, it's a Deadspin interview) and I thinkhe just made people angry with some his word choices. I emailed Nadel and he explained the article further.

Meg, I think your problem is (and rightfully so), that when Erin Andrews goes from bringing the story to the story just because she's hot, you're frustrated...and I can understand why

I can respect that. For a while, sports broadcasting saw this (see MNF sideline reporters), but generally ignored it because its basically a crock of shit, but in the advent of blogging, it only becomes more clear what people want. I'd argue web 2.0 is (clearly) shifting the way ESPN (and others) do business, and for better or for worse, they're still learning to cope with it...

Integrity was overrated anyways...

As I rub my hand along my shiny scalp, I wonder why you use the word bald-headed in a derogatory manner.

That aside, I haven't seen her that much, but from what I can tell, she's quite capable at her job. It's sad that she's become the story rather than the reporter.

The link for the recap didn't work but if he truly talks about her rather than the game, he is behaving in an unacceptable manner. I do not like behavior that lack professionalism.

She's a sideline reporter. She's not really a journalist, because I don't see her writing stories. The way the job works nowadays, it's part of a sideline reporter's job to look good. This reeks of one middle-aged man jealous of another reporter's access.

Also, and this is a little off topic, and probably a little inappropriate, but the only thing Pat Burrell and I have in common is our love of Erin Andrews.

Journalists don't just write stories, Tmil. They research, they ask questions, they tell stories, whether in print or not. I'm sure there may be some jealousy involved, but most male sports guys are able to get the same interviews Erin gets. They may get different answers or reactions, but access to the athletes is generally equal. It's not like if Erin Andrews and John Clayton walked into a sports PR office and asked for an interview with whoever, one would get it over another (at least that's what I'd like to think).

What is the players only sofa? She went up to Ramirez to talk to him and she didn't ask him questions because he was sitting on this sofa. Is it an area of the clubhouse where the players are free of journalists? If so, as a journalist, shouldn't leave him alone?

You've got a point, Meg. Actually, you have several. And I'd like to think that John Clayton would get the nod there, because he's been at this a lot longer than Erin.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but it sounds like he has a point. He talks of her attire and her behavior. It sounds like he's calling her out for her professionalism.

From the article:
"Good for you, Rammie," Andrews said three hours before the game, bending forward to shake Aramis Ramirez's hand.

"Good for you."

Ramirez, who had three doubles in the Cubs' 7-1 victory the previous night, sheepishly accepted Andrews' congratulations. She didn't ask him any questions because he was sitting on the players-only sofa; she seemingly just wanted to show "Rammie" her support. Weird.

Moments later, the blonde reporter was chatting with Alfonso Soriano. At one point, she placed her hand suggestively on Soriano's left bicep.

Was I reading too much into all this? I don't think so. I've been a paid observer for a long time ... and I wasn't exactly the only one who noticed.

As two Cubs stood near their lockers, one asked the other: "Hot? Or just attractive? Does she do anything for you?"

The inquisitor then made eye contact with me as if saying -- to use a term my uncle might have -- "Hubba-hubba!"

This went on for at least an hour. Finally, Piniella emerged from his office, ready for his dugout media session. As he turned the corner, there was Andrews in all of her bare-legged, high-heeled, low-necklined glory.

"Hey, hey, hey! Look at this!" Piniella said, loudly and excitedly. "Are you doing a baseball game today or a modeling assignment?"

Fair question. I have seen Andrews at many events in recent years and this was the first time I had witnessed anything quite like this, which is why it seemed so bizarre.

If the intent of Nadel's writing was to provide a game recap, than do agree that his personal opinions regarding the professionalism of Erin Andrews should not be included. It is not the proper forum for that discussion.

Now it gets dicey. How much of the Cubs' leering and commenting is due to Erin Andrews lack of professionalism and how much is due to the fact that men are pigs. Was the behavior of Erin Andrews and her choice of attire a lack of professionalism?

Nadel's article has a picture of Erin's attire that evening, and I have to say it's never something I would wear to work. It's something I would probably wear to a summer party, not to a baseball game where I have to do my job. I agree with JuT, normally she looks fine, but this garnered a raise of the eyebrows.

I'm going to get in trouble for this, but it's not like I haven't been before, so....

Most female "journalists" have no business in a locker room. They are hired so the average unathletic couch potato will watch SportsCenter or the pre-game show. They are eye-candy and nothing else. While there are exceptions to the rule, (Suzy Kolber) who work extremely hard at their job and are respected by not only the players but their own peers, most of them are brain-dead airheads.

When you intentionally dress like a street-walker, your intent when going into a locker room is to get the type of reaction Erin got, not to do her job, whatever the hell that is.

Sad but true. Just to clarify your lockerroom comment, you're saying the brain dead airhead types don't deserve be there because they don't have a real job, yes?

Not at all Meg, journalism is a real job. Their only qualifications are appearance, not having a brain.

That's what I meant to say...I know you meant journalism is a real job, but I just wasn't sure if you were talking about the airhead types or female reporters in general in the lockerroom. I understand now.

So I emailed Nadel, and he emailed me back saying the point of the column was to recognize the stereotypes journalists (hot blonde, babe, etc.) have to fight through to practice "real journalism". He also said most female sportswriters he knows would have been mortified at the scene in the Cubs lockerroom (is that his point, that Erin wasn't mortified?) He also explained he's not a beat writer, he's a columnist, and that it's not his job to do game recaps, which kind of clears things up.

I changed the link to Deadspin's page, which has a link to the article that works. The Deadspin page also has a really good interview with Nadel, who basically makes his point without using "sexpot" or "blonde bombshell". Everything he says makes sense, I guess it's just the language that got me so riled up.
