Season Opener

Posted by Falcon02520

The 2008 MLB season kicks off from Japan tomorrow. The starting time of the game is 6 AM (est) here in the United States (where the rest of the season will be played). Who is planning on flipping on the ESPN2 Network in the AM? Do you believe it is a good idea to play the season opener in Japan and why?

Bad Idea. I'm sure it's going to line the owners pockets, so once again the owners say hooray for us and fack the fans. Who the heck wants to watch a game at 6am. That is Balogna of the highest degree.

I'll be sleeping in and watching it at 10am on MLB.TV. This is the one time the London time change will actually be good. Is it a good idea? Not really. It's cool for the Japanese players to play in their home country again, but Japanese baseball in general is always trying to separate itself from MLB. They don't want to be associated with American baseball at all. Some of the greatest players in Nippon Professional Baseball have been American or foreign, but they won't get voted into the Hall of Fame.

Bad Idea. It alienates the core fanbase by playing the game at a time when most are unavailable to watch it, let alone buy tickets and attend it.

So they'll have to catch the other 160 games of the season. True fans won't "miss" the game. They'll listen to it on their way into work or school. And there's been plenty of games that took place at times inconvenient for people to watch (day games on weekdays, 10 PM EST games on the west coast, etc.). Missing a few games a year doesn't alienate anyone.

We're not talking about any game. We're talking about the season opener. However, you are correct. Alienate was too strong of a word and true fans will not be affected.

I still feel it's disrespectful to your core fanbase.

I can understand why they chose this time of year, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. From a marketing perspective, the problem becomes when to hold these overseas promotional events. It would even more difficult to coordinate this activity sometime during the regular season.

I think it's a good idea. With the 4 exhibition games played over the weekend, about 130,000 people who normally wouldn't get a chance to see Major League teams, got a chance to see them in person. And people watching on television (in prime time) got to see their national team (Yomiuri) take on the World Series Champs, and have a lead going into the 6th inning. That must have been sick to watch (thanks ESPN for not broadcasting those games).

I think having games in Japan is a good thing. Japan is the 2nd biggest market for baseball. It's starting to produce some serious talent and will be an integral part of baseball's future.

It's kind of Americocentric to be whining about the start time of a game, or not being able to see 2 games out of 162. We're spoiled here. All our favorite sports are our own sports, and they're played at our own times. Japanese fans of MLB have to watch their games at 8 AM, European fans of the NBA and NHL have to watch those games at midnight or later. I think we can toughen up, set our alarms earlier (or stay up all night like me) and handle a 6 AM start time.

But I do feel bad for the A's and their fans. They have a 3 AM start time in Oakland. And this series counts as two home games for them, even though there will be many more Red Sox fans there. MLB should have split the series, having each team get a home game and an away game. And they should have selected another east coast team to avoid such a horrendous local starting time.

I don't think it is Americocetric to expect an American Baseball league to arrange it's schedule around American time zones. Are leagues in other parts of the world running on American time zones? Does your favorite soccer team in Europe play at time that is convenient for most Americans? It would be one thing if other sports leagues revolved around our time of day, but, they don't so why would it be wrong to expect American sports to operate on another county's.

I agree that a series should be played in Japan at some point during the year just as there should be a series in Mexico, Venezuela and possibly the Dominican Republic. I do not agree in the terms that the MLB season will open up with the majority of it's fan base not even watching...

But you're playing the games in Japan. Irrespective of it being an American League game (i.e. from America, not AL/NL), then they hold it at a time convenient to them. When the NFL game was played in London, it was played at 6pm in the evening, a time convenient for us. It just so-happened to be 1pm ET, when the games usually start.

There was a County Cricket tournament in Sharjah recently, and it was held at their time of day, not ours. IRL holds races in Japan and Australia convenient for them, not the US.

The leading soccer teams in Europe play at a time convenient for Europeans, not Americans, because it's European. They don't give two hoots about the Americans when scheduling.

The F1 season traditionally opens in Australia, and starts at 4:30 in the morning (usually earlier) for European audiences, which is the majority of the fan base. Bernie wants it to become a night race, so that it can be easier for the European audience, but I don't mind. I think it adds something to F1. Since it's the first race of 18 or so, it doesn't really matter. The excitement comes in the last race. You get the World Series live at your convenience. So don't worry about it - you see the bit that really matters!

Alex, I do agree with everything you said and with most of what Rawb said, I just can't accept holding the Opening day game of America's pastime in another country AND in the early morning hours. I have no problem with playing in other countries and the owners making their millions, but, to move the opening day festivities to another country and tell the fanbase to set their alarms early cause the game is gonna come on while birds are chirpin'.

It doesn't really matter. Considering there are 162 games, some of which will pass even the most dedicated fan by (Niteowl excepting), holding a dozen a year elsewhere won't really hurt. Why not arrange one home and away game for everybody in a different country? There are a heap of countries available, Australia was missed off an earlier list, even some games in Europe. Missing 2 games over 162 per season isn't that much of a loss.

I agree that games should be played in countries other than the US (See comment above). I question that should opening day be played in another country. Major League Baseball is built on traditions, is breaking this one [opening day in the US] the right move?

If you're going to hold overseas games, it makes sense to hold them at the start or end of the season, because it is easier logistically. That's why non-European F1 races are at the ends of each season. Climate reasons are important for Australia and Brazil, and why Canada is in the middle of the European season, but the Asian races are held in non-summer times because it would break the European continuity. So, I can understand why they've stuck it where they have. Perhaps they should hold the overseas games as they have at the start of the season, then "opening day" can be held in the USA a few days later. So you still get the traditional aspect of it.

I'm just wondering what the big deal about opening day being in America is? I always watch the first baseball game of the year, but it wouldn't bother me if it were played on the moon. The game isn't just America's anymore. You're going to have to learn to deal with games in other countries, and players with unpronounceable names. As Alex said above, it's not as if the World Series is being played over there. There are 2,430 Major League games on the schedule this year. I think we can handle having two in Tokyo, even if they are the first two. And having the series in March makes so much sense. The teams get a few days to adjust to the timezone change, then a few days to readjust once they come home. You couldn't do that in the middle of the season.

I have to admit, it kinda sucks to alienate what is essentially, the entire American Baseball public to play an opening game in Japan. You said it yourself Rob, you watch every opening game...most people (baseball fans) do...and playing it at 6am will prevent me from watching due to work, sleep and the like...

I understand the concept, but its just difficult to execute...and like much of baseball's publicity stunts...was executed poorly...

Toyko is 13 hours ahead of EST and 16 on PST, which means its gonna be 3am when coverage starts for As fans...I just don't understand why they don't push it to an 8 or 9pm start Tokyo time to at least get it to 7 or 8 am EST and 4 or 5 PST...

As I said, having a team from the Pacific coast is a bad idea. But I actually think 6 AM is the perfect start time for a Japanese game. That way, fans could get up just a bit earlier before going to school or work and at least watch part of the game.

As Cheezer said above, alienate is a very strong word. MLB definately isn't playing to their core fanbase, buthey're not alienating us.

And it's kind of like an election. During the primaries, the candidates are real extreme, either left or right, in order to win their base. Then once the main election starts, they go to the middle for the undecided voters. The base is going to be their support no matter what, so mind as well try to get those undecideds.
