Rocco Baldelli to begin rehab stint on Monday

In a followup to THIS story

Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli is begining a rehab assignment at Class A Vero Beach starting on Monday.

He will be the team's DH.

He is also scheduled to play in Wednesday and Friday's game as well.

While there is no timetable for Rocco, the Rays are allowing him to basically play his way into shape and allow him the chance to prove himself as a regular everyday player again.

There has not been much in the way of curing his condition and still not much is known how his body will react to the rigors of everyday play. But the team is basically affording him every opportunity to prove himself capable of returning to his former status.

Rocco's contract runs through the end of this season as his team option for next two seasons had a buyout clause and the Rays exercised that option. He will be a free agent at the end of the 2008 season. The rumor mill has mentioned several teams that are VERY interested in trading for him THIS season if he is capable of proving his health.

The Cardinals, Orioles and Phillies are three teams that have been scouting the Rhode Island native while he has been working out with the team recently and those three teams have been prominently mentioned in multiple sources to have inquired about his availability and progress since landing on the DL in Spring Training.

Best of Luck to Rocco as he continues the road to recovery and also to re-establishing himself as a productive MLB player.

It's amazing that Rocco Baldelli is even beginning a rehab assignment. What he had is sometimes fatal, and he's thinking about coming back. Now that's heart.

Good luck in rehab, Rocco.

And about trading Rocco, if Tampa Bay thinks that he can stay healthy, I believe they should keep him. He's an upgrade on Cliff Floyd and Gabe Gross judging by what he has done in the past. However, sometimes after injuries, they turn out to be busts compared to what they were before.

It's about affording him the opportunity to play. The Rays will make a move for another outfield bat by next month - a proven, steady bat (apparently NOT Ken Griffey Jr. or Barry Lamar)

Rocco is a free agent next season anyway. I'm betting they'll take a bag of balls and a 12 pack of adult beverage if it means he'll get an opportunity somewhere.

He's not part of the Rays future - it's nothing personal - but the buyout was good business and they'll reward his courage and get him where he can be used - for his sake.
