R.I.P. Billy Mays

"Billy Mays, the burly, bearded television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50.

Tampa police said Mays was found unresponsive by his wife Sunday morning. A fire rescue crew pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m.

There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play, said Lt. Brian Dugan of the Tampa Police Department, who wouldn't answer any more questions about how Mays' body was found because of the ongoing investigation."

I'm infinitely more shocked about this than Michael Jackson's death, which we knew was going to come sooner rather than later given his health. But Mays? I watched the guy on Conan last week. And he even had that new Discovery Channel show, and was selling ESPN360.com in those recent commercials. Really unbelievable.

Rest in peace, Billy.

"I'm infinitely more shocked about this than Michael Jackson's death..."

I'm infinitely shocked by that comment.

I understand as a 20 something year old you wouldn't have remembered the prime of Jackson's career, but to say the death of some cartoonish TV salesman shocks you more dumbfounds me.

I was kinda hoping it was a sarcastic comment.

And it's not like Billy Mays transcended the world. He only irritated us with his commercials. Even though he's dead I'll still say it.

After all, D21W did say "which we knew was going to come sooner rather than later given his health."
It helps to read complete sentences, not just selected fragments.

Exactly. Sure, MJ had a far bigger impact on our culture, but he was a sickly shell of himself at the end, secluded god knows where, with premature death being the inevitable end to the downward slide he'd been on for the past decade and a half. Mays, on the other hand, was on the Tonight Show 5 days ago, looking/acting as normal (well, for him at least) as ever. So yeah, I'm definitely more shocked that somebody who I saw looking perfectly fine on TV 5 days ago died suddenly, as opposed to a guy who hadn't performed live in 8 years and was living in seclusion like Howard Hughes. Don't you think that's a fair statement to make?

This reminds me of a poem :

Whether pseudomercials, whether entertainment, whether classic posters of pseudo-porn Every time a pseudo-celebrity dies, four more are born...

I know you will R.I.P. Billy "Willie Hayes" Mays... this is as close to Farrah Fawcett as you were ever gonna get!

Summer of 2009 - It's trying to make itself quite interesting.

RIP, Billy Mays. I'm never gonna forget those OxiClean commercials of yours. Like Conan O'Brien said about two days ago on the Tonight Show , you make it seem like the thing you're trying to sell is the most important thing on the face of the earth. Definitely a shocker. My prayers and thoughts are with Billy Mays and his family.
