Private vs Public

In Penna.there is a raging controversy about public schools not having a chance to win Basketball championships.State titles almost always go to private Catholic schools. This is almost exclusive in the AAA & AA divisions of girls and boys.I've been trying to find the numbers to back that up so if anyone out there can tell me where to look I'd appreciate it.Back in the 60's Pa. had 2 championships Catholic and public. This seemed to work very well but the PIAA decided to make it one.The advantage for the private schools are they have no boundaries. Some say they recruit, but I,m not going there.Of course there are other advantages like more money to pay coaches, better facilities, and the fact that if players parents can afford to pay for schooling, they've probably had them in travel leagues and better competition. Are there any other states out there with this controversy??

Not really a controversy, but in Colorado there is one private Catholic school, Mullen, that competes for the 5A (biggest classification in CO)title every year. Yes, they can recruit. It might be a controversy if they won every year, but they don't. However, they are a contender every year.

Not sure if they are "allowed" to, but they do. You know, offering "financial aid" to players that would not otherwise attend the school.

By me the Catholic schools are poor. Very poor. The jewish schools on the other hand.... So I'm assuming that this article is really just about PRIVATE schools vs public... unless the pope really is behind this (he's a tricky little fella)

Yes, Frank it is about private vs public. In Pa. however it's mostly Catholic schools that win especially in the girls divisions.Tyrone, I think you've run off on another topic, that's so unlike you.:-]

I'm assuming that there aren't enough teams to keep private and public seperate?

So just make it public plays public and private plays private. I know that sort of sucks but I can't find another solution to the problem. Recruiting will occur without them officially saying they are recruiting. Same thing happens in college, they will always find away thru loop holes.

But what do you do with a private school in central PA with nothing but public schools around it?

I believe there are enough teams, I'm not sure why they no longer have the separation. It seemed to work well, but somebody decided they had a better idea.

What you just discussed is what the controversy is all about.Public schools want the split [ mostly because they haven't won a state title since the change] and of course private are just fine with beating public schools in the lower rounds to gain momentum for the later rounds when they end up playing other private schools.

Ok, I'll petition the pope, it seems to be the only answer.

Being from a private school, I can say that recruiting is more under the rug. It's more they try and get good athletes who are good students interested, and then use athletics to get them to stay. Although Minnesota did allow open enrollment in all schools for a while, which meant that recruiting did happen. Hopkins High School had students from all over the metro on their basketball team (it's one of the better programs in the nation).

If the point of the tournament is to determine the best high school team, why seperate schools? Private schools do have an advantage of being able to accept students from wide regions, and I'm sure some recruit. But public schools also have lower academic standards and public funding.

I can't judge the private schools in the US since I've never seen, never mind been in one.

However, in Kuwait, every American school, where it is not obligated for you to speak Arabic throughout the entire day, is private.

I don't know about that statement you said about academic standards, Rawb. Some public schools are definitely pretty tough. But I dunno. Like I said, I can't judge.

I know "some" public schools have higher academic standards than most private schools. But don't you think it's safe to say that, by and large, private schools have higher standards?

generally, my experience with parocial schools in PA has been the opposite...most of them barely meet the academic standards of the state... The same may not be for secular private schools, however their numbers are much smaller in PA

I guess it's different than I thought it was. My mistake. I only know about MA and New England private schools vs. public schools. And generally, the private schools are better and harder.

Raw, I believe you should play on an equal playing field. Then and only then can you determine who is the best in the state.

Well let's say it was just public schools, don't some public schools produce traditionally better athletes in certain towns? I know in MA, Everett HS always has a great football team, and they always crush Cambridge. The schools are similar in size, but Everett has an advantage.

In my school, the private schools tend to get a lot of the big time athletes, but the public schools are so much bigger, it all ends up evening out. It's almost a level playing field, if anything with edge going to bigger public schools like the one I got to (get me out!!!).
