Peyton Manning Wins Third MVP

Posted by Behbigben15

Peyton became only the second NFLer to win the MVP three times, just moments ago, joining Brett Favre.

Quite an accomplishment, I must say. Congrats to Manning.

This was the clear choice. Not many other players can be no higher than fourth in the major statistical catagories for their position and fail to lead their teams to a division championship all the while having their balls washed non stop.

If you don't include individual defensive players (Polamalu, who played with Harrison et al?) or rookies (Ryan, who had Turner?), both of whom have their own award anyway, I don't have a problem with Manning winning. Who else are you going to give it to? Pennington's probably the only other rational choice, but Indy's running game was horrendous, much worse than Miami's, and Manning played the biggest role in no fewer than 4 or 5 late game-winning drives during the Colts' winning streak. With anyone but Manning at the helm, no way the Colts win 12 games; I think the 'Phins could have made their turnaround with a number of starting QBs other than Pennington.

Kerry Collins. Before you laugh, picture them without him this year. The Colts could have come in second in the south without Manning.

Ummmm....no. Don't give awards to guys who manage the game. He gets the job done but he is not outstanding.

Had Atlanta won the division I would've made a case for Michael Turner.

This was a year where not one player stood out in any statistical category AND be on a team with a good record. Drew Brees would've swept the awards had New Orleans been interested in playing defense, look at his numbers.

Oh well, Manning for some reason always struggles against San Diego, so we'll see what happens.

If that's not ESPN thinking I don't know what is. First of all, it is the Most Valuable Player award, not most outstanding as you state. Like I said, the Colts could have taken 2nd place in the AFC South without Manning this year. Could the Titans have taken First in the south and won the first overall seed in the AFC without Collins? As far as "managing the game", that is what QB's do. I'll take a QB that manages a 14-2 record over Drew Brees any year.

SSR, how come no divisional title is a reason NOT to vote for Matt Ryan? But with Manning, it's irrelevant?

Sorry, but Collins? Yikes. If you're going to give it to anybody from Tennessee, give it to Haynesworth. But a caretaker QB in the Dilfer mold winning the MVP would be a total and irredeemable travesty. I'd go so far as to say the only QB who couldn't have piloted Tennessee to a 13-3 season was Vince Young.

And what are you talking about, the Texans would have easily taken 2nd in that division if Manning wasn't around...

I thought you weren't counting defensive players Davis? My top pick for MVP is Polomalu, then Haynesworth, then Harrison. It was a year dominated by defense, outside of Rivers and Brees. I don't buy into the "caretaker" or "game manager" BS. These QBs are often in offenses that focus on managing the clock instead of putting up lofty point totals. So when a "caretaker" QB does well it does not make for good stats, but, it can and in the case of Collins did lead to a good record. I believe that is the goal of each and every team in the league. I firmly believe that the Titans were successful in large part due to the leadership of Collins.

I only mention Haynesworth because I couldn't find any decent offensive candidates on Tennessee. :) (Unless you count Chris Johnson, who whined about the ROY vote when he wasn't even the 2nd-best rookie running back in the league)

Seriously, though, I'd love to see a defensive player win, but if it didn't happen this year, I don't see it happening anytime soon. If we're including those guys, though, I'd take Polamalu, Haynesworth, or Harrison.

And as for Collins, caretaker QBs by definition don't have gaudy counting stats, but they can have good per-attempt stats, and Collins didn't. In terms of rate stats, he was 23rd in QB rating, 26th in completion %, 24th in YPA, 14th in adjusted net yards/att., and 12th in Football Outsiders' DVOA. He played his role admirably, but there were at least a dozen -- and probably more like 20 -- QBs in the league who could have played that role with equal or better effectiveness. That doesn't exactly scream "indispensable" to me.

How about Kurt Warner? At times the guy's looked absolutely phenomenal - and if it wasn't for an atrocious defence, the Cards would be a serious Super Bowl contender.

Nobody's taking Warner seriously because they tanked down the stretch and couldn't beat anyone outside of the incredibly weak NFC West anyway. Besides, I get the feeling most people have written off the Cards already -- like it's a foregone conclusion they're going to lose to Atlanta.

But I agree that he had a fantastic individual season, and he had no running game and no defense to help him out. At the same time, a lot of people would have great numbers throwing to the 3-headed WR monster of Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston...

I personally feel like this was more of a lifetime achievement than MVP...Peyton was a safe pick in a season where just about anyone could've won he didnt blow anyone away but for keeping the Colts consistant he won...my only arguement is how easily he won as if voters were copying eachothers answers
