Patriots Legacy

Posted by Cheezer

My 5 year old son and I are sitting here watching ESPN (for the first time in months) while I surf the net. Note that the topic on SC is Harrison.

He looks at me and says, "Do you know the Patriots cheat?"

Thinking I misheard him I ask, "What?"

"Do you know the Patriots cheat?"

Being truly surprised at what he just said I ask how he knows that. My thought is that he overheard is older brother or something. He says that his friend at pre-school told him.

He's 5.

Nice job Belichick.

I think they'll overcome it, they will def be known for their super bowls then this incident, look at bobby thompson he hit probably the most famous home run of all time and he cheated and no one really reflects on the cheating aspect now

Poor kid. I at least made it to 12 before my sports heroes broke my heart and instilled in me the cynicism I have today. And it's an interesting thing. I used to like the Patriots. I even rooted for them when they played the Rams. Maybe if Belichick goes away, I could like them again.

This has probably been hashed out more times than anyone wants to count but, why do coaches cover there mouths when they call plays? why do pitchers/catchers change there signs when there is a runner on second? So the other team can not gain a competitive advantage. IMO, Belichick was using the tools available to try to gain a competitive advantage. I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning, and Golic said something to the affect of " whenever they played a team multiple times, they changed their signals". If most teams did this, what the PATS were doing was a crap shot at best anyway. It is just like a spotter trying to read lips, or identify a signal and assoc it to a play. Taping it, you are just able to save it for later. The FACT is this team, almost completed the greatest football season ever, without taping the opponents signals, and I am sure the other teams made sure of it. No I am not a Patriots fan, just sick of everyone wanting the teams accomplishments wiped from the books. I have seen varies comments on the net stating that Jimmie Johnson admittedly did the exact same thing during his time in Big D. IMO, most teams do one thing or another to try to gain some sort of advantage, Mangini just new what Belichick did, and burned him on it. Which IMO, is pretty low in my book. Belichick gave Mangini his opportunity, you don't think that Romeo Crennel knew what was going on? Belichick had to learn it from somewhere? TUNA?

And it will be hashed out again. This isn't a guy on second base trying to steal the catchers signals. This would be like assigning a camera man to sit in front of the Catcher and film his signals. It was like standing 10' from a coach with a camera and microphone and filming is play calling, wait...that is exactly what it was. It was your run of the mill LEGAL method of stealing signals.

Steel Town, again, the cameraman wasn't on the same sideline as the coaches.

Does anyone remember the Cleveland Indians being caught stealing signs with a camera about 7 or 8 years ago? It wasn't a big deal. Then again, the Indians weren't that good 7 or 8 years ago, so I guess it wasn't a big deal.

But there is a difference between baseball and football. In baseball, there are only 2 or 3 kinds of pitches most pitchers have in their arsenal. But how many kinds of plays are in a defensive playbook.

I guess my point is EVERYONE is trying to do the same thing in one way or another. regardless, it will not be happening anymore, now that they will be allowing a defensive player to wear a transmitter helmet like the QB's do. More more signals to steal.

Cheezer, Bill Belichick doesn't care about your 5 year old son. This may or may not come as a surprise to you. Bill Belichick doesn't care about his "legacy" or the Patriots' "legacy." He cares about winning football games. And honestly, I don't care what your 5 year old son, or his friends, think about the Patriots. I don't care what any 5 year old thinks about any sports team.

Roughly the equivilent of a football team not caring about its reputation...

I'm not an expert, but all football teams care about their reputations...as well as the NFL's

You insensitive remark smacks of ignorance...

no...not a big difference and that's the problem

Ultimate goal of any football team...max ticket sales, jersey sales...profit

Damage to reputation risks profits

Bill Belichick is an employee of the football team

Damage to him and Pats reputation equal risk to profit

This is business 101 Rawb and yes it matters

You think Tom Brady's sitting on the sidelines worried about ticket sales? Or when Bill Belichick is running the practices, he wonders about how much jerseys are selling?

Bill Belichick is not a businessman. He's a football coach. He was hired to do a job, and that job is to win.

And if you want to talk about business, the Patriots got caught cheating and still sold out every game, have a 30,000 person waiting list for season tickets, and are doing quite well financially. Do you think we'd be doing so well if we were a perennial 4th place finisher with a perfect and lovable image?

Sports business 101: winning=revenue

And I should clarify that I didn't mean to say I don't care about Cheezer Jr. If he and Cheezer Sr. were watching a game in my section at Gillette, and some Pats was being abusive to them, that someone would become my bitch.

I have to agree with Rawb on this one Jut. As long as Belichick isn't going out of his way to tell 5 year olds that he doesn't care what they think, he will be fine. He is the coach, PR handles their image.

Actually, I do think Brady is thinking about that...

You think teams like guys like pacman who damage their rep...

And if winning = revenue, then why don't the braves sell out playoff games?

It only works for so long...the eagles have had a waiting list for season tickets for years (I've been on it for 5 personally)

The point is that the chick may not worry about it, but the guy who can fire him does and if Belichick's shit proves detrimental to the bottom line (which indirectly it already has) than his leash gets shorter

How many potential jersey wearing fans were turned off by spygate?

Want more? Belichick is a business man...why do you think moss was willing to let new england work out a deal with Oakland? You don't think belichick sold him?

How about luring some of the older guys to new england before the championships?

You may not care, but Bob Kraft does and while its all honkey doorey now, when times get tough, don't think it won't even out...

Obviously Bob Kraft cares about the reputation and financial well being of the team. And if he felt like Belichick was causing his team to lose money, the leash would get shorter. But to compare Pacman Jones to Bill Belichick is ludicrous. Pacman Jones is an average NFL player as well as a criminal. Belichick is one of the top coaches in the League who videotaped defensive signals. Monumental difference between the two.

And winning does equal revenue. If the Braves don't make the playoffs, they don't sell ANY playoff tickets. And the reason Atlanta doesn't sell out for the playoffs isn't because of some sort of image problem, is it?

Guys, this post wasn't about whether or not some 5 year kid in Indiana cares if the Patriots cheated. It's about the fact that some 5 year kid in Indiana knows the Patriots cheated. As these boys are drinking their juice boxes and talking about the latest "Magic School Bus" episode, they also talk about the Patriots and the fact that they cheated.

To me that says a lot about our country and the all encompassing sports media. Like I said, we hadn't watched SC in months, yet he knew about the Patriots. I had know idea that it had reached pre-school.

I believe this horse has now been properly mutilated
