Patriots 32nd in Strength of Schedule?

Posted by Coreyisarealboy

I don't know how the NFL rotates its schedule, and I'm sure the poor AFC East has a little to do with this too, but I still sense a little Boston bias again.

The New England Patriots were given the easiest schedule for 2008, based on 2007 results. Their 2008 opponents had a combined winning percentage of .397! Are you serious?! Shouldn't the good teams be getting harder schedules?

What do you guys think?

This is my message to the NFL for giving the Patriots a cupcake schedule

In response to the question at hand...I think naturally the Patriots should have the hardest schedule...The best team should get the greatest challenege the next year...especially cheaters

Sorta...

the schedule works like this...(and I haven't looked at their schedule)

You play your division foes twice (6 games), you play another division's foes once (aka the AFC North - 4 games) and you play an opposing conference's division once as well (say NFC West - 4 games)

That's 14 games...and the outside division games are rotated...I believe then the remaining two games are scheduled on some type of basis amongst divisional positions...i.e. the pats would play 2 other division winners in the AFC...which is why they always end up playing the Colts. Not sure if they're required to switch this up at all or if its on a rotation, but that's how it generally works

So if you go to a team site, you can actually get an idea of what a team's schedule will be like years in advance (like the eagles have up to 2014 projected)

so the NFC North would rotate between the NFC East, West and South year by year and the AFC East, North, West and South year by year as well, so you can predict which teams you'll play until the NFL has a scheduling change...which i doubt as everyone is pretty happy with it So yeah, in effect the strength of schedule is only alter by 2 games on any given year, the rest is out of anyone's control

Maybe it's just something that always seems some way, though nobody knows how they do it, like that discussion on how the Yankees and Red Sox always seem to get cupcake Interleague schedules and nobody can figure out how they schedule Interleague games.

oh, i have no idea how interleague works...something about rivalry games and because of that its naturally unbalanced... though the yanks and mets always play, so they have hardly anything to bitch about...

I thought this was a build in to the schedule. If you do well, you play other teams who did well. I realize you have to play the teams inside you own division, but how is it the Pats play the easiest schedule coming off an unbeaten season?

First, blame the Jets, the Dolphins, and the fact that the entire NFC West blows.

Second, the NFL division rotation is set waaaaay in advance.

Thrid, strength of schedule based upon last year's records is meaningless. There is no way that the The Pats and Dolphins will have 16 wins and 1 win respectively.

Fourth, crying about strength of schedule in the NFL is just plain weak. Check that, it's sad. There are 32 teams and the schedules are as balanced as they can be for only having a 16 games played.

Oh I'm sorry, but when I hear the NFL boast about its parity and then see the undefeated team get the only schedule strength below .400, I'm gonna throw a red flag. I also stated that I wasn't really sure how the rotation worked, so calling me sad is rather sad in itself.

Dear NFL, please realign the divisions so people that hate the Patriots have one less thing to cry about. Put the Cowboys, Colts, and Steelers in their division to make things fair for the rest of the NFL. We wouldn't want teams that can't hire decent coaches or make good personnel moves to feel like they can't win a game. God forbid men get treated like men. If a team is better others the maybe other teams should man up and play tougher, Oh like the Giants did in the Super Bowl. I cannot believe this crap is starting in April. It really is sad.

The Schedule a team has is only one part of the season and the teams success all we know we might have some surprise teams do alot better than the previous year like the Cleveland Browns. You never know what can happen in any game. the pats were suppose to win the SB 42 right but, they lost. you get what i mean

The Patriots were 18-0 and lost to a better Giants team who deserved to win. There quest for perfection was thwarted and they will forever go down in history as the team who went 18-1. Am I still sad they lost? Yes. Am I mad the Giants won? Absolutely not. I actually liked the Giants and consider myself an NFL fan even more than a Patriots fan so I guess I have that going for me.

I'm surprised we haven't heard the "NFL wants to see them go 18-1 again" joke.

But seriously it's not like the NFL was trying to give the Pats a cake schedule, but when you play in that division and the rotation has you playing the NFC West, that's basically 10 cake games. Then the AFC West is pretty weak outside San Diego, and the two teams assigned to the Pats were the Colts and Steelers.

Plus I doubt all these teams will have a .397 win percentage next season. There are some teams on the schedule getting better and some who can only get better.

Yeah, they play both West divisions, and their divisions, which gives them 14 cake walk games, of which, you can basically chalk up 9-10 wins against uncompetitive opponents

Someone please explain to me how the reigning Super Bowl Champions are on Monday night football exactly once and the Cleveland Browns are on 3 times. I guess the NFL is really banking on the Browns to have a great season.

Who cares? Teams change every season. Last year the the Browns were a good team, the year before they sucked. Is every team going to be exactly the same as last season? If so, then why doesn't the NFL just hand the trophy back to the Giants? Also, the Patriots can't help if the Billes, Dolphins, and Jets all suck. They must play these three teams twice each. That is six games versus teams that were not very good last season. Part of the reason that the percentage is so low because six out of sixteen games is a lot...

I agree to a point but as far as MNF football is concered usually they like to take teams that they know are going to be solid because afterall who wants to watch Chiefs@Dolphins or something like that in Decemeber? I was just trying to say that NY has a big market and would attract a good audience, not to mention they were SB champs, this past year. Therefore I would have expected them on MNF more than once.

MNF is no longer getting the top billing games TSA. That's why Saints vs. Packers will make it but not Packers vs. Cowboys.
