Only on the Left Coast

Posted by The Beast

I think it would be safe to point out that the left in left coast not only refers to the west coast's geographic location but also it's political leanings. Because no place else in American would you get this...

I don't agree with everything Sarah Palin or think she'd be a great presidential candidate, but c'mon, she's isn't the anti-Christ. Well, in Berkley I guess saying Sarah Palin likes the Bruins is like saying that Hitler likes the Bruins.

I feel that your attacks on both berkeley and on liberalism in general are a bit out of line. Granted, the sign is prolly in poor taste, but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST IT'S A COLLEGE GAME!!!!! It's part of the High School/College sporting environment (for better of for worse).

Additionally, the part I'm most disturbed about is that you take a poor joke on a politician and immediately turn it into making liberals and Berkeley out to be these crazy people who compare sarah palin (a total dumbass) to hitler (a guy who carried out genocide).

Finally, why is this a bad thing (beyond it being in slightly poor taste)? You seem to be implying that this is some rediculous phenomenom unique to the "left coast" even though political commentary in a sports context has been part of sports since the beginning of time. Hell, disney made a movie about an olympic hockey team and spun it as a metaphor for the political tension/drama of the cold war (which was a pretty cool idea, it saved my ass on the AP US History exam last year). The Beijing Olympics pretty much proves this.

It's in poor taste to use a bad joke on a politician as a means of profiling and creating a prejudice against an entire university.

By definition, liberalism BEGS itself to be attacked.

This seems to be an awful lot of words to be dedicated to an insignificant (ESPECIALLY in a sports context) event.

Or as a wise man once said - Keep your politics and your religion to yourself. (It seems some people don't have a separation of the two)

Besides, how do you know Palin doesn't actually like Bruins? (To shoot and field dress, at least)

See, I see a picture, and some light political commentary. Actually, more geographical commentary. I don't see any attack on liberalism or Berkeley. More of an observation of tendencies, and a fairly agreeable one at that. FP, you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

This post is of a picture The Beast wanted to post. It's not disguising itself as an article. It's a frigging picture of a sign The Beast thought was interesting, and wanted to share with AGM. Nothing more.

I wasn't really attacking the sign. I think it's kinda funny actually. But I don't think you'd find that sign in Nebraska, Iowa, South Carolina, or Colorado. Because it's like saying McCain likes Arizona or Biden likes Michigan. So what. Who cares who a politician likes. But in liberal land, it's sorta like saying that if Palin likes your team that that's messed up.

The Right Coast is far from conservative. Boston, New York, Philadelphia, DC. California also has that whole Prop 8 thing.

And what disturbs me most of all is the apparent lack of biology instruction at Cal. Two signs to the right of Palin... "Bears eat Bruins?" Bruins are bears.

Jim: By any chance, did you see Battlestar Galactica last night?

Andy: No, I did not. Was that any good?

Jim: Actually not. It was really so-so.

Dwight: Ok...

Jim: I mean I like all the crazy monsters and stuff. You know, like klingons and wookies and all that but...Sorry, was there something you wanted to add, Dwight?

Andy: Is that anything like the original Battlestar Galactica?

Jim: You know, it's weird. It's practically a shot for shot remake.

Andy: Really? Huh, that's cool.

Jim: Story's kinda bland. It's about this guy named Dumbledore Calrissian who needs to return the ring back to Mordor.

Andy: Really? That doesn't sound right.

Sorry Beast, I don't even think YOU understood the picture.

Refer to the poster to the right of the guy holding the Palin pic....I'm quite sure that says "But UCLA still can't score!"

I'm think it is a joke on Grandma Palin's love for making babies, not a left wing left coast mumbo jumbo hatred.

I don't think it is. The UCLA scoring sign is behind the Palin sign. Wouldn't they be next to each other. And in case you're right than it still relates to California liberals' obsession with Palin. Obsession meaning that they continue to bash her and believe she's still running for VP.

Does common sense confuse you?

Who the hell would put up an individual sign saying "BUT UCLA STILL CAN'T SCORE!!!"?

The fact you're turning it into a political commentary is duly dumb. How can you make one measly basketball sign an example of an entire state? Pssst.....even REPUBLICANS and CONSERVATIVES don't think highly of Palin so don't make generalizations.

I really wish that Palin would be off the TV set entirely, but come on man not only was your "commentary" weak and offbase, it has little to do with sports.

It's a measly joke and both you and FP made over-reactive statements because of political disagreement.

I don't see any point in the picture other than a jab at a conference rival for a crucial basketball game.

Toronto FC fans went into Columbus last year and chanted "We don't pay for health care!".....what does that make the entire nation of Canada, socialist commie evil people of the north? No, it's a chant and a jab at your biggest rival.

I'd love to see what you would say to the Duke student section when they chant things at players of North Carolina or NC State.

Please man, stop the madness and realize how pointless this entire thread was and let it rest.

I think it's clear that the two signs are related. But I also don't see any political commentary from The Beast. And FP overreacted in a major way.

But The Beast made a great point above, you'd never see an Oklahoma fan saying "Texas likes Sarah Palin." I remember hearing about the Harvard/Yale game this year and Harvard fans making fun of Yale for giving George W. Bush his Bachelor's. Then bragging about Barack Obama's attending of Harvard Law school (even though W got his business degree at Harvard).

But was it a great point? I already knew Berkeley was pretty liberal, as were most students there and everywhere else. And the joke wasn't in horrible taste. I don't even think it's that funny. Sarah Palin's become a part of pop culture, her name's going to pop up in places.

And I have no problem with this being posted. It got 21 comments, it's in the locker room, what's the problem?

For the record, at an NU game this year my buddy held up a "Pierce Norton Voted for McCain" sign while we played Providence College...

so Berkeley isn't the only liberal place (hey we're in boston)...but they are a bunch of liberal hippy douchebags...

I do think it interesting that to call someone conservative is the King of Insults to some liberals. I can't imagine some sports fan in Wyoming making an "X voted for Obama" or "X likes John Kerry" sign, although perhaps it's happened.

Rawb, it's no more interesting than the fact that to call someone is a liberal is the ultimate insult in some conservative circles. People at the extremes demonize the other extreme. There is nothing new, interesting or noteworthy about it.

Just to clarify here. All I wanted to do was point out that you wouldn't find too many Sarah Palin joke signs elsewhere in the country. You wouldn't find a Rush Limbaugh likes Kansas State from a Kansas fan. People wouldn't think to do that in a lot of states. But when you get a very liberal and politically/socially aware area such as Berkeley than you're going to get those kid of signs. It wasn't an attack on anybody. It was just illustrating a point. Apologies to anyone offended.
