One Year Ago... A mistake was made.

Today is the one year anniversary of the permanent ban of Tyrone Briggs.

I feel that he has more than served his time and deserves a fair chance to return to ArmchairGM.

I do realize that myself and he had some tiffs and dustups in the past but we have made our peace with one another and I know that he brings a value to a site like this forum/community. He's edgy, he's always well researched and he's a fiery debater. I know that reputations often precede people's true beings - BELIEVE ME, as I am one of those reputable beings - but I think it's time we give him a second chance.

We've been co-existing just fine on other websites for the past 10 months or more and we both laugh at the silliness that occurred here at AGM. We are men underneath all of our childishness and we have moved on - here's hoping all of you can too. There hasn't been any animosity and we both understand that we're two of the same kind, passionate individuals. Tyrone DESERVES to expand his conscientious and Chicago-oriented opinions especially in these days and times; with Obama as president, with Jay Mariotti relegated to "internet creature" status and n o longer printed in ink, with the Cubs and Bears so prevalent in the everyday news.

I am asking that we all join together in the movement and help get a member that is a true Armchair legend back. Open your hearts, open your minds and see that this community welcomes a brilliant, eloquent, driven, routinely hilarious and strongly opinionated sports mind. This site is better with him than without and you know it too.

  • Note: This is intended JUST for Tyrone, not anyone else...

Thank you for your time.

Stiles, I agree that Mr. Briggs is a a brilliant, eloquent, driven, routinely hilarious, and strongly opinionated sports mind. From an ArmchairGM fan's/user's perspective, I'd definitely agree with you that I would like to see him back.

I can't quite remember why Tyrone was banned in the first place. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Tryone Briggs was banned he threatened to end ArmchairGM, or something along those lines.

Can someone give me the truth about this subject? I'd like to know what he did exactly, because when he left, ArmchairGM's "drought" started...

Coincidence? Maybe... but I doubt it...

Honestly, he and I were fighting two separate wars against each other - they both were stupid.

He was riled up one day and started responding with some vulgarity and anger but another person who either works in the same building or jacked his IP/computer created a fake lawyer ID and made comments along the lines of threatening to sue the site for illegal usage of copyrights.

It was bogus (and probably had more to do with that "jamel" character than anything) but it was simply that the situation got COMPLETELY out of hand and none of it was anything resembling the sports banter AGM is known best for...

Jamel absolutely needed to go. He had created an anti-AGM hate site and was slinging slander and harassment around like he Pacman Jones raining on the dancers at the club. He was just antagonizing and didn't add anything of value but Tyrone stood by him like a civil rights lawyer (or just because it was funny getting everyone riled up over such silly bullshit) and made a stink of it instead of keeping to the function of the site.

Briggs should be back, even if it's under a new user ID or what have you. He doesn't need - or even want to - be here 24/7 but he definitely should not be banned anymore.

Whatever he "did" or didn't do, he served far more than a reasonable sentence. He's not out to come back and seek vengance. He's not out to destroy anything. He liked this community and the site's functionality and he likes having multiple outlets to spread his Chicago-based wisdom.

(Psst! The traffic stopped when the "Founders" mysteriously disappeared)

I say no. I dealt with tyrone the first time, and if Dan/DNL would have listened to me any of the times I told him I felt Tyrone needed to go, users would not have left. I gave tyrone several chances, and there were periods of time where I didn't mind having him around. The drought started when Tyrone et al turned AGM into a pissing war against several members (myself included), but we didn't notice it because there were hundreds of comments each day regarding the JtJ ordeal.

You are not the first one to suggest this, manny. I said no to Tyrone 2 years ago, I said no to tyrone a year and a half ago (when the lockerroom was temporarily shut down), I said good riddance when he was banned a year ago, and I say no today.

I get he has a lot of things to say that would provide a unique point of view, but so do people in jail. Tyrone was blocked by DNL for threatening legal action against the site (there's no way to establish that Jamel and Tyrone are different people, much less that MikeyJ was not Tyrone).

And if he does end up being unbanned, it's on his final chance. There will not be another chance for Tyrone if he does get unbanned and he goes back to his old ways...

Let's put it this way.

I have been hot and cold with Tyrone for a long time. But he's far more productive and less of a troll than Jamel.

If Tyrone is back, Jamel should not. If there's even a hint of him back then both of them are gone.

Tyrone and Jamel are IN FACT not the same person. I don't know how you could think they could be. No one alive could pull that feat off.

We may never know who was behind "MikeyJ" **cough, cough JAMEL, cough, hack*** but I feel extremely confident it wasn't Tyrone nor directed by Tyrone.

I'm not so sure they work together but have reasonable cause to believe they are related by marriage.

But - who cares?

Tyrone doesn't want to be associated with "Jamel"'s antics and he doesn't want to start childish wars over things so truly inconsequential as sports or mysterious pseudo-personalities on the internet.

FP, you could say Tyrone was the reason Jamel was banned for life.

He plagiarized an article written by a San Francisco Chronicle writer (he's actually plagiarizes more if you want links) and Tyrone pointed that out.

And why am I supposed to believe you on this?

Your reasons are nothing new manny. I've heard them all before. Before you it was SSR, and before SSR it was Dan, and Dan told me all the same things you're telling me now about how he doesn't want to start childish wars, how he can change, how he could become a valued contributor. It didn't turn out any of the times before. Remember, if someone had listened to me the first time, Tyrone would have been blocked within his first month on AGM and there would have been several users that wouldn't have left.

I don't care if you don't believe Tyrone was MikeyJ or not. Dan did, and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one since he has all the fancy priviliges that give him the power to see info about users that others can't (mainly IPs, but I think there's more info as well). I want neither Jamel nor Tyrone, nor any of their fake accounts back.

And where is Dan at now? Where are any of the founders? They built it, we came, they cashed out and now we're (a few users) are regulating the site into a boring, dreadful experience where only a few particular people have a say that doesn't get instantly shouted down.

You don't get it. You want this site to be something it can't be and still be popular at the same time. It has to be a free flowing community, not a stifling noose. Traffic is Traffic... traffic is good for the writers of articles, traffic is good for the readers and their comments, traffic is good for the editing and updating of pages; traffic is good! Tyrone keeps things hopping. He's entertaining... shit everyone on the internet can be entertaining once you realize how useless it is to take anyone - ANYONE - seriously on the 'net.

Open doors, don't lock them. It's for fun and enjoyment, not for restrictions and regulations. I understand the need for some rules, but there should be rules that allow people to be free, not prevent them from doing so.

You keep wanting red lights put up on the Information Superhighway.

Also, if traffic is traffic, then why didn't AGM explode into a super popular site when Tyrone et all showed up? They brought in traffic...

How does convincing Niteowl to return justify reversing an wrongful ban?

These two things have nothing to do with each other. I didn't drive away NiteOwl, I offered him a place to live] when he was down and out... remember that?

And to recall, - honestly - his posts were mostly of the boring, droning re-wording the game recap variety without insight and without his personal opinions. When he was telling stories of his experiences and the past he was very entertaining.

He left because he was tired of people criticizing his posts (mine might have been the straw that broke the camel's back for him, but I wasn't the only one) Furthermore, he left because he was upset about Tyrone being banned and he didn't want to be the fulcrum between the two sites playing see-saw around him - because he was posting on here AND JTJ.

I'll gladly apologize to him (again, by the way) but NiteOwl leaving and Tyrone getting banned are entirely separate issues.

Let's not pick up stones and cast them here... I'm not the only person to drive a user away. Not even CLOSE.

Yes, Manny, you are responsible for Niteowl leaving, although you share half the blame with someone else.

That someone else is you, FP.

Manny and Niteowl were having a spat, Niteowl felt Manny had crossed the line with some of his comments and approached you, as somewhat of a management figure here, to help resolve the issue. Instead of handling it in the manner befitting your title as a admin, you bitch-slapped him off the site, referring to him as a whiny old man unable to deal with someone criticizing his articles.

From what I gather from him, Manny has apologized to Niteowl, and it is neither sufficient enough or honest enough for him to return. But even if it was, FP, there is still an apology waiting from you.

I just read all the comments here, and while I still don't fully understand the reasoning behind TB's ban (not saying I disagree with it, just that I don't know enough of the facts to formulate an opinion on it), I don't see a problem with a probationary lifting of the ban.

TB was very often a good contributor to the site, and we need as many of those as we can get. If he acts up, there won't be much hesitation to resume the ban, will there? The risk is so small compared to the potential reward. And this site is user-driven, not rule-driven.

I'm not saying the ban was right or wrong. And it's not up to me to unban him, so whatever happens happens. But...

I voted because I think this site is better with him than without him - especially knowing and understanding the persona behind the personna since it's so damned easy to misunderstand how real people behind these user names can be far more dynamic than the reputations and expectations of others.

Plus I think this site is better with a community that is open minded and accepting of different opinions than one that is antagonizing and preferential.

Let's face it, TB has always been interesting, scathingly critical and downright hilarious with his unique perspective.

I truly believe he is an asset worth culturing rather than denying.
