They are already ahead of microsoft. Look at MS's last product release: Vista versus Google's: Chrome. Light and day. When MS makes a product that is as easy, efficient, and safe as anything google does then maybe they'll be the big dog again. Google can and does do wrong, but far less than most software companies. Example: They have an SSL connection type for gmail, but it's hidden so that you need to be not looking for the word security or encryption to find it. Not cool.

The only REAL problem with VISTA is that they put it on inferior hardware.

Thanks ST...

At home I run Vista with a quad core and 8 GB of Ram, runs like a dream (though 64 bit in general has much to be desired)

Microsoft bloated the hell out of it though and considering the movement to thin laptops (both literally and figuratively) its not such a good idea. I wish there were more options in Vista to turn off some of the features I don't use...and I loathe the admin warnings...

Anyways, There are many issues, but its not as bad as many people claim, and ST is dead on about hardware

Sad part is Firefox will get hurt the most by this, and not IE.  :(

I'm not so sure...

From what I gather, Cheezer (as an example), seems like a relatively net-savvy person. Not a super-techie, but A guy who knows his way around. Those are Firefox's "Customers" and they won't switch unless A) the product they are using is significantly inferior or B) There's a big reason to do so (perhaps an advanced feature).

Most savvy folks (as seen with the vista discussion above) have a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, what makes you think it'd change for firefox...

It is better. Firefox is a memory hog, Chrome is not. http://www.g...ooks/chrome/ <--- that is the comic book that explains it all, if you have the patience. Chrome is built to be more stable and not let one issue shut down the whole browser. It's missing firefox's add-ons, but it is open source so those add-ons are on their way.

A lack of add-ons at this time means no ads being interrupted, something Google is very interested in.

Ok you seem like a bunch of computer savvy guys, unlike my self. I have a new laptop and I'm using IE right now. Would I really be better off switching to Firefox or Google? What would be the benefits other than slight differences in the navigation toolbars?

firefox is your best all around bet to be honest. Chrome is a good product, but not sure I like it as my fulltime browser, it has some display problems

Are any of them faster? I've used firefox and it seems like the only real difference is just some slight display differences. I think the only thing that could really make me switch would be something that runs faster or smoother

It won't be faster--that is determined by your internet service. But you need to switch to Firefox right now--it is far more secure than IE. Would you walk outside and give people all your money and tell them all your secrets? That's what you are doing with IE.

Chrome is the fastest browser on the market currently. That is because it has the least scripts and add ons made and running on it. However that will change quickly especially as Google builds out the browser and their partnerships

I found this. Look at IE loading times compared to Chrome and Firefox. Another reason you should leave Internet Explorer! Even IE8 is worse than Chrome/Firefox!

I haven't tried chrome yet but I fell for Firefox so hard I got my entire office to switch to it. So Chrome will have to be pretty special if I'm going to switch to it full time.

I'm sticking with Firefox for now, because it's clearly superior to IE (nobody can disagree with that), and Chrome is new. So there are bound to be teething problems initially. I like that it's Open Source though. Does it yet have tab recovery if you close it and reopen it, like Firefox does with its Tab Mix Plus? I'll wait around for those add-ons to be available.

If you open a new tab, it shows recently closed tabs, not sure about after a crash, though.

Chrome is designed to not let the whole browser crash. If one tab goes down, it only takes down that one tab.

To add on to what Pip said, it also has the same option as Firefox where it will start up with the all the tabs you already had open when you closed the browser. This is great when another program makes you restart you computer to finish installing updates. You can set that under options.

The Microsoft monopoly on computing is a disgrace. Over here, whenever you buy a computer, chances are it'll come as standard with Windows, be it Vista or XP. Because it runs on Windows, Microsoft "helpfully" give you Internet Explorer, Outlook Express (which I have no idea how to use and no desire to ever use), and Office. I think that a user should be able to choose which OS and IB they want, rather than be forced to have the Microsoft version at startup. I'm by no means an expert in these fields, but I have friends who are, and they make good points. Why do people pay £100s for Microsoft Windows, when Linux and other Operating Systems are available on the Internet for free? The problem is that Microsoft can plough money into advertising because they run a business, whereas Linux doesn't. If I was a business, I'd switch to Linux/Firefox because they're better quality, cheaper in Linux's case, more secure, and I wouldn't mind betting the technical support is better. The problem at the moment is that if you ask most people what Operating System they use, they wouldn't be able to answer. That means they're using Microsoft, which is bad.

However, it's good that there's so much competition to be the #1 Internet Browser. That can only be a good thing for Internet users in the future. No longer does Microsoft hold a monopoly in the market.
