News, Notes and Discussion on an AGM Tuesday

Posted by JuTMSY4

Its Tuesday. Almost the worst day in sports. Anyway, here's a couple of thoughts:

  1. Prince Fielder won the Home Run Derby. No offense, but I fell asleep by the start of the second round. I think this event needs some pizazz because the act is tired. Maybe we've been gouged by 'roids so much that bombastic...bombs don't have the same allure?
  2. Anyone else no longer receiving e-mails when they get private messages? I've haven't been. I know some things have stopped working because no one's doing site maintenance and I'm curious if this is included.
  3. Thoughts on gambling articles. We've sort of had this discussion before. I, to some extent, don't have an issue it, but some of the articles are crap/spam and some are just ripoffs (one case was deleted by SSR, Cheezer's been fixing a few others). I don't want to push it to the point where we can't make a bet/challenge with someone. Thoughts?
  4. AI to Los Angeles...the Clippers that is. Hahahaha
  5. And a little baseball talk:

A) Dodgers overrated? Do the Giants or Rockies have enough?

B) Can anyone stop Albert Pujols?

C) If the AL West just joined the Japanese league, would you notice?

D) Roy Halladay goes to...?

1. Did not watch it

2. I never remember getting e-mails on private messages but I think I turned that feature off.
3. If an article is just a hunk of spam then ditch it. Gambling articles don't bother me but as soon as I see that it is a gambling article I leave it pretty quickly.
4. Ummmm no comment I suppose.
5a. I dunno
5b. No no one can stop him
5c. No I frankly would not

5d. Real Madrid, they seem to buying everyone else.

I don't mind articles about gambling, but articles that just give odds, and also offer "$100 free with $100 deposit" are spammish. Or at the very least they're too short to be considered articles. Then there's "articles" with sentences that don't make sense in their paragraphs, and are loaded with links. Those are clearly spam.

1. Didn't watch.

2. Now that you mention it, I think I have the same issue with the email notification.
3. Personally, I hate the gambling articles, but the people have a right to post them in my opinion. If the writer wants to refer to his sportsbook site, I have no problem with that if the article also includes some analysis. Just don't link it. We have minors on this site and we should not be facilitating gambling.
4. AI is done.
5a. No idea.
5b. Pujols is the best right now.
5c. Nope.

5d. Kontinental Hockey League (or the Phillies)

Why so much AL West apathy? Yes, I would notice, because I'm a Rangers fan. Personally, I wouldn't care if the NL West and Central and the AL Central disappeared, and I'd cheer if the AL East fell into the Atlantic.
What's driving this question? East Coast bias/time zone issues? A perceived lack of competition? The lack of Yankees/Red Sox in the division?

Only 4 teams out there, sort of a division that exists only because it has to. It's too hot in Arlington in summer. The two teams in/near big markets are also the #2 teams in those markets. And Seattle? That team's already halfway to Japan.

The four teams I get--I hate that, too. But what does Arlington heat (an overrated and cliche excuse anyway) and local market position have to do with all of you?

For the record, I almost typed AL Central, but then I realized they're just as mediocre of the NL East...and I'm a homer

Yeah, that's what's driving my question. I realize I'm an AL West homer, but I'm curious why they seem to be regarded as irrelevant by this admittedly small sample set. I can think of a few divisions where nothing is really happening, while the AL West has a good chance of picking up the Wild Card.

The Dodgers are not as good as everyone thinks they are and will return to earth soon enough. I say Roy Halladay stays in Toronto. Just a hunch based on his salary and other team's inability to take on huge money at this point. The teams that COULD take the money on are the Yankees and Red Sox... neither is going to get a stud from their own division mid-season. If Doc goes anywhere - wouldn't the Mets make the MOST sense?

I agree with everything, except... The Mets already blew the farm load on Santana...which is why it doesn't make sense (but yes, they could afford him)

OK. But they need another quality starter if they are going to get serious - getting healthy soon will help too. If I was a Phillies fan, I'd be a little nervous right now.

Yeah they do...so do the Phillies (who have more chips to play). Heard an interesting rumor (via Woody Paige, so take it for what its worth) that the Rockies could be interested (he's from CO). If, at the start of the season, I told you the Phillies best pitcher would be J.A. Happ, you'd assume they'd be in 4th place right now, right?

Woody Paige wants EVERY person of interest to be tied to a Denver rumor - that way HE is relevant... don't buy into it. Halladay can decide where he goes, but WHY WHY WHY would he want to go to 5,280 ft? Home or not.

Keep this is mind - Doc is a 10-5 guy. 10 years in the league, at least 5 with the same team, meaning they can't move him without his approval, regardless of contract stipulations.

The Phils DO have chips to move and better trading partners - which may lead to another pitcher than Halladay (Oswalt?, Cliff Lee?, One of the A's young guns?) but is Ruben Amaro brave enough to take risks??? I met him many years ago and it still surprises the feces out of me they made him the GM.

As long as the Phillies are paying Brett Myers, it'll be tough for them to pay a salary like Halladay's too. Next season, no problem, but half a season's salary to Halladay is still a LOT to take on these days. Don't understimate the Jays' willingness to dump salary more than get pieces in return...

But I also think Doc likes Toronto and Toronto (especially Toronto's front office) needs him. If they deal Doc, they have NO excuses for levelling off their payroll like they have. They can't keep payroll levelled off bitching "We're paying Doc too much" then deal him to shave loonies. It's a lose-lose move no matter what they get in return...

As a sometimes degenerate gambler I am offended at how useless those stupid gambling articles are.

Roy Halladay goes nowhere, right now at this moment hes the only thing keeping me watching the Jays and has been for years and will be for the next year and a half.

I know it's late, but oh... what the hell.

1. Prince Fielder won the Home Run Derby. Didn't watch it... but is the guy off his vegetarian diet? I'm getting a little suspicious.

2. I've talked to Sannse (privately)... two days ago, and I got notifications in my email. If this is more recent then two days, let me know, and I'll bug some people. (And think of who to bug while I'm at it)

3. As for the gambling articles... I didn't realize how much they bugged people. But it's like throw pillows in a hotel room: they're just... there. I never read one (fully), and I never really had a problem with them. But I can see you guys' point. It's spam, in a way... and something may need to be done if people complain about them and how the users aren't following the "rules".

4. AI to the Clippers? Eh... we'll see what happens. That's all I gotta say about that.

5a) Overrated? Nah... I think they're rated just the way they are. I think the Giants and Rockies are underrated (Rockies more than the Giants). I'm rooting for the Giants to win the NL West. Their players have so much potential to become stars. Lincecum? Well, he's already a star. But Sandoval, Ishikawa are pretty damn good. And Johnson and Zito are helping put the Giants on the map, and everyone else swiped them off during the preseason.

5b) Nope.

5c) I would... but only because I like following the teams (mainly the Angels) as the season goes by...

5d) Roy Halladay goes to... well, wherever he goes, he deserves another facking Cy Young. Does it really take 22 wins for him to get another one? Sheesh. What more can he do?

One problem with the gambling articles that I have is that there are so many of them and they push other (read: Better) recent articles off the screen before enough people get a chance to read and vote on them.

I never really thought about that, Steel Town. Great point...

Not to defend him or anything, but in case users here don't know (or forgot), you can check out all the articles here, or by just clicking on the blue tab labeled "Articles".

But still... the articles with such great content get skipped over mainly because of articles that don't take too much time to write are being published hour after hour.
