NHL...help please

Okay I'm looking to expand my knowledge of sports and I really want to start following sports other than the mainstream ones...NHL and AFL were some ideas of mine to get into...I chose AFL over CFL because I can't watch any CFL here in the U.S....I am hoping to be able to help write on both sports and expand the writing of each sport here at armchairgm...Anyways, I was looking at the NHL Standings and it was the wins and losses but the teams are sorted by points...anyone care to explain how teams get these points?

If the game ends in regulation,

win: 2 pts
lose: 0 pts

If the game ends in overtime:
tie: Both get 1 pt.
win: 2 pts

lose: 1 pt.

How can it end in a tie? An OT loss is one point, a shootout loss is one point, a win is two points.

Ties are no longer possible. They did exist prior to the shootout rule being implemented.

Should a game end in a tie at the end of the third period then a 5 minute overtime (sudden death) is played. Each team is reduced to only 4 skaters and a goaltender. Minor penalties are still worth 2 minutes in the sin bin. If the game is still tied at the end of overtime then a shootout is held to determine which team gets the extra point. Each team selects 3 shooters and the home team gets to pick whether they want to shoot first or second. The shootout then takes place like innings. If after 3 shooters the shootout is not decided the shootout goes into "extra innings" to decide the outcome.
