NFL Tinkering with the Pro Bowl

Posted by Rawbeezeitz

I just read this Associated Press story/rumor:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gEsdEncVZxw_oMfgldlFTStJfnvAD95COD8G1

To summarize, the NFL will reportedly move the Pro Bowl to Miami in 2010 (the Super Bowl is in Miami that year), and move the game from after the Super Bowl to the weekend in between Conference Championships and the Super Bowl. Obviously this would mean players from the 2 Super Bowl teams wouldn't be involved.

At first I hated this idea, but now it doesn't seem so bad. Playing it in the same city as the Super Bowl makes sense, people can book a one week trip and see both games. And instead of having the game a week after everyone's had their football climax, it comes right before, as something to do during the usually agonizing bye week.

Thoughts?

I saw this story earlier today, and find it very interesting. Im not opposed to the idea of moving the pro bowl, but I feel like moving it up in the schedule actually makes it even more meaningless

Yeah, I keep going back and forth. It seems like it will be a one time deal to test it out.

Turning the Pro Bowl into an appetizer for the Super Bowl main course might make it more interesting. Then again, a game that doesn't mean anything in the middle of games that mean everything, and with stars from the two best teams removed, might be even lamer than what we have now.

I really don't think it can get any lamer. I kinda like the idea. Especially putting it in the same city as the super bowl. There are plenty of stars to go around that they could deal with losing out on the superbowl teams. Plus by removing some people from the rosters the league can right some of the wrongs by the voters.

You may also be eliminating players from the losing Conference championship teams. The reason why, or one of anyway, there's a two week break before the Super Bowl is to allow the players to recover from such an emotional game. Win, or lose, it takes a few days for them to recover, physically and mentally. If I'm on the losing end of a CC game there's zero chance I'm jumping on a plane the next day so I can go play in some meaningless exhibition game.

They don't have a two week delay between the conference championships and the Super Bowl every year. When they do, it is for media hype, not player recover. However, you point is well taken that the losing players certainly won't be hyped up to play in the Pro Bowl right after missing out on the Super Bowl.

I'd vote for eliminating the game altogether. Out of all the All-Star/All-Pro games I ignore, this one tops the list.

I gotta say the NBA All-Star game is my most ignored.

What?! You don't watch the slam dunk contest or anything?? That is part of the All-Star festivities.

Players dunking with nobody opposing them just so they can make a highlight reel doesn't impress me.

Neither does that slam dunk contest part of All-Star weekend.

Well I'm amused easily, so I guess that would explain it.

It's been confirmed by the NFL.

It just seems that it's going to clutter up an already out of control media fest that is the Super Bowl. It would add greater inconvenience to the people of a city that will already be overtaxed to support the Super Bowl.

I would propose that it take place in the city that is scheduled to host the Super Bowl the following year. Kind of a pre-run as it were.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. I like the phrase dry-run, because it's so similar to dry-hump.

FOR A SPORT WHOSE "ALL-STAR" GAME IS ALREADY USELESS, EVEN SOME OF THE BEST TALENT FINDS A WAY TO SKIP THE GAME YEARLY. LEAVE IT ALONE AND FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE DON'T PLAY IT BEFORE THE SUPER BOWL... AT THIS PACE WE'LL BE LUCKY TO HAVE 50% OF THE ORIGINAL PLAYERS VOTED IN PARTICIPATING.

I don't really watch any all star games, the NHL and MLS all-star games I at least watch for a bit.

The NHL All-Star "Game" is a joke. Hockey isn't hockey without checking. The only ASG worth watching is baseball's, because at least the fundamentals of the game don't change much.
