Mike Nolan Fired; Singletary to Step In

Yes, that's right. The San Francisco 49ers have just fired head coach Mike Nolan, who was supposed to be fired next week after the bye week. But that all quickly changed.

Linebackers coach, Mike Singletary, was promoted to interim head coach for the time being.

I gotta admit I didnt see this one coming. I knew Nolan wasn't doing well out there, but just figured the 9ers were okay with that.

Singletary, as long as the 49ers don't lose every game the rest of the season, will be the head coach for the next couple years, I believe.

He's the guy they wanted before they hired Nolan, but didn't feel like he had enough experience.

There are a lot of flaws with that team. Mainly they blew a pick on Alex Smith and have no starting QB. Singletary has the D gelling together pretty well, and Gore is a legit back. I'm also worried now that they have Martz coaching. Unless someone is there to reign him in, I honestly dont think he is a good coach.

I wonder (if) Singletary is the coach next season and the team heading for another Top 5 draft pick, what direction they will head. Another QB? Or will they draft defensive/O Line and look for a QB on the FA Market?

The real tragedy is that we're losing the league's best-dressed coach. Say what you will about his tenure with the 49ers, but the man looked sharp in a suit. And frankly, we need more coaches to go that route.

Clearly the 49ers are one of the worst run franchises in pro sports, but this move works out well for Nolan and Singletary. Nolan gets to leave a shitty situation and Singletary gets a little experience as an NFL coach, so when he finally finds a real job he will be ready and more likely to get hired. He's always a candidate for every coaching job you see open up, so it's nice to see him finally get a shot, albeit with a pro team that would get smoked by USC.
