Let's Not Talk About Ten Years Ago.

Ten years ago, (yesterday) Mark McRoided hit Home Run #62 on the season against the Cubs in St. Louis. Where were you?

Roger Clemens was in Toronto with an 18-6 record and on his way to his 5th of 7 Cy Youngs. Barry Bonds was in San Diego mired in a 6 game homer-less streak. Sammy Sosa was having baseball be berry, berry good to him and Rafael Palmiero went 3-4 in Oakland and had an erection for more than 4 hours after the game. The Tampa bay Devil Rays were 7th in the A.L. in attendance and didn't have the worst record in baseball. The defending World Champions did!

MTV occasionally played music videos, Osama Bin Ladin was still alive and bombing US Embassies throughout Africa, Bill Clinton was proving that sometimes a cigar isn't "just a cigar" and Exxon and Mobil were on the verge to merge to bring cheap oil to the masses forever.

As you can see, the world was still an innocent place in 1998.

Do you not talk about it, is your head too big to remember or do you misremember 1998?

I was in my living room with my dad...and we were both falling back in love with baseball He, still trying to get over the Orioles (and only beginning to understand their suckitude to come) and me vaguely assuming the "Phillies" and "legitimate baseball franchise" were actually mutually exclusive terms...

I might have misremembered it a little. A bunch of my friends and I were trying to hit the bong 62 times each to celebrate! We weren't celebrating McGwire, per se - just celebrating having a fat sack... that's was life in the 90's.

It's not Big Mac's fault that chicks dig the long ball.

Yeah, chicks dig roid-raging, zitbacked dudes too, right?

Hmmm... Do chicks dig asterisks?

Tom Glavine should've stuck to hockey if he wanted chicks. Greg Maddux should've stuck to doing their taxes.

I was in Europe working in Germany for the NavalIntel/SpecOps group and we were watching on a television when he hit the home run to break the record. To bad that he doesn't have the guts to stand up to the press and public for using, even though at that time it wasn't a illegal drug andro is a steriod and he was helped using it, especially when he hit all those long homeruns. I can remember my old man saying, even today, the only drug Ruth used was a cold beer and a couple of hotdogs.....

I will always remember Al Gore calling them Mike McGwire and Sammy Susser. This was before the beard and the impending spontaneous combustion of the Earth.

I will never forget Roger Maris' son and family congratulating McGwire for desecrating his father's relatively good name.

Wow, I forgot about that. Did the Maris family do any interviews as the facts became known?

Not that I'm aware of... should we try to find and contact them and do a piece on them and their part of the story? An MS-ASD AGM exclusive!

I'm also curious as to whatever happened to McGwire's pudgy little kid because if I remember right, not long after that season ended his ex-wife got full custody of him.

McGwire's ex-wife, not the pudgy kid's ex-wife... (just to clarify my horrendous grammar!)

McGwire doles out baseball advice to young hitters? Remember kid... anyone can plead the fifth, but you gotta get creative... "Let's move forward", "let's talk about the future and not the past" or "I'm not here because you want me to talk about what you want, I'm only here because the subpoena said so..."

Ah... 1998. Mika Hakkinen beat Michael Schumacher to win the Formula One World Championship. I remember that season as clear as a bell. Murray Walker got very excited about the Hakkinen crash at Monza. John Higgins beat Ken Doherty 18-12 to win the World Snooker Championship. Henman made part the Semis of Wimbledon, losing to Sampras. About then, "Come on Tim!" was being said for the first time. England beat South Africa to win a series at home for the first time since about 1986 thanks to freakily good batting from England's bowlers in the Third Test (Angus Fraser in particular), and heroic bowling from Darren Gough in the last test. I like 10 years ago. :-)

This is why I like the British... I might have to move to England just to be immersed directly in non-stop unintentional hilarity!
