Let me be the first to say that I don't want to see you banned. I think you add a lot to this community and that for the most part you changed my mind about a lot of the things I thought about you back during the whole Leslie situation a few months ago. However, I don't think there is any place for derogatory language or slurs here, and I won't stand by while it occurs. I could have just blocked you on the spot (as happened before), but I didn't. I wanted to give you the chance to change it. I have not acted unilaterally (as I believe I have the right to do as an administrator -- someone whose judgment the founders saw fit to trust) because I don't think it would be right if I did. However, I believe something needs to be done. LASportsBlog said that if the comment had been about race, then there would be an issue. I say, why is there a difference between race and sexual orientation? If another user had called Tyrone or a black athlete or another black user a n*gger, then there would be an uproar. Why not for homo? I know that standing up for this sort of issue makes me unpopular at best, but I unwaveringly know that I am in the right, and I would have done myself a disservice if I had let it slide. Tyrone, if you man up, change the original reference in the live blog article, and apologize, I'll back down. If not, I'll continue to hold out for some sort of discipline. Just thought my reasoning should be out there in the open.

I appreciate 1st ammendment rights, but I as well don't like ANY sort of derogatory terminology. If we are goign to be against the n word we have to be against somethign derogatory to any group, regardless of race, sexual preference, etc.

I agree with Tyler that it is bad, yet agree that Tyrone shouldn't be band or anything of that nature.

Maybe setting somethign up for the future? A rule?

Practicing what I preach. I find the use of the word Nazi to be highly offensive. The Nazi's killed 6 million Jews and 13 million people. I don't think its a matter of words "not to say." I think it is a matter of recognizing the importance and power of words as well as respecting your peers. Your reaction is exactly the reason why I did not want any banning to go on. I don't want you made into a martyr. Your use of slurs like "homo" and your nan-chalant use of Nazi offend me. I am not going to urge someone to ban you. Instead, I am going to urge you to realize that those words hurt members of the community. Whether you choose to respond to the fact that you are hurting and offending members of your community is up to you.

The Devils referrred to in my name is the name of a sports team in New Jersey. While some in New Jersey have attempted to get the name changed, as of now, the team is still called the New jersey Devils. Thus, I will continue to refer to them. As I state, if you areoffended by my use of the word Devil in my title, you are free to use your freedom to speak in order to bring attention to it. The idea of freedom of speech is to let ideas compete in the marketplace of ideas. There is nothing more contrary to the spirit of freedom than excerisizing censorship. I can understand that administrators need to keep the site running effectively and that at times it is important to ban certain users because they are trolls trying to bring down a community that we have built. In my opinion, the site has other means for expressing disagreement with the use of slurs. Minus the comment away. Link to the comment and condemn it. Write an article about homophobia in sports and reference it. It is too easy to use the "consor's pen" to silence those that we disagree with. Apparently it is too hard to remember that we too have the power of free speech. And this unsolicited lecture was brough to you by the Cardozo Law School 1st Amendment Theory Class (DNL was in the class too, but I did better) :), Spring '05.

See, MJD, that's a reasoned argument against it. So here we go. DNL (who apparently didn't do too well in that class?) said that what to do in this situation was my call, and you've convinced me that censorship is not the way to go. Therefore: I'm not going to do anything.

Let it be known that neither derogatory language, racism, nor homophobia, should have no place in civilized discussion. I think that there should be action taken to prevent its use. However, I also respect freedom of speech and freedom from censorship, so I will not take said action. I call on all users to make this a community where everyone can feel safe and respected, as is their right as human beings. Tyrone, I apologize for starting off combatively, but I do not apologize for how I feel. I hope that you will do the decent thing and change it (and perhaps your habits) of your own accord, but I will not force you, nor will I exercise my right to punish you if you don't.

Now, I don't have any more time to worry about this right now -- I have to actually do work or else I'll get fired.

I very much respect you for allowing your reason to eventually overcome your passion. We all feel passionate about our issues, and, like you, I get offended byt he use of slurs. I think you deserve derision for the anger at which you originally approached the subject, and I think you deserve praise for the way in which you attempted to resolve it. Now that Tylersalt has backed away from his threats, dare I suggest, Tyrone, that you think about how the words you use affect the people in your community. Words have meaning and power. Whether you agree with the underlying point or not, the way I see it is you are trying to reach an Audience here and alienating them through your word choice is probably not the best way to do it.

It does, I've never seen or heard a gay person upset by the word homo. If there is a gay person on this sight who is incensed by the use of the word homo they should make themselves known so we can refrain from the use and respect their feelings. As someone that was actually involved with the live blog, I was not offended by the comment, as it is just another name that gets thrown around during sports conversation.

How many times have we called Latrell Spreewell "Coach Killer" or "Choke Master"? How many times have we shredded Mike Vick or O.J. Simpson, Mike Tyson and the like?

Irregardless if you were offended by what Tyrone said about Romo, that still would not mitigate the abusive, vitriolic, temper tantrum induced, profane statements that Warden put in during the blog.

If anyone deserves to get drilled it would be him for spewing his attitude all over the public area of the forum instead of taking it private in messages with Tyrone.

No word is inherently offensive. However, in this instance there is no doubt that the intent of calling Tony Romo a Homosexual in this context is to insult him. It is the equivalent of saying "what do you expect from that Jew." Of course the word "Jew" is not inherently offensive. However, the use of the word in that context is clearly meant to offend.

I will just say this and then I am done with it. I think making a Tyrone a Martyr for his use of what was intended to both be a slur and an insult is unfortunate. As a community I would think we have a responsibility to others to try to be respectfull. These issues are always complicated. I think I made a strong argument as to why censorship is not the answer. Instead, what we saw on this thread was an attempt to justify and use false rhetoricla devices to explain away an obvious example of bigotry. In my opinion it is unfortunate. Contrary to Tyrone Briggs's assertion, I am not trying to be politically correct or to tell him how to think, write or speak. I don't tell members of the KKK not to use the word nigger. I don't tell anti-semites not to use the work Kike. I don't tell homophobes not to use the word "homo" or "faggot." The entire core of my belief is that we all have the same freedom to speak. It is up to the marketplace of ideas, i.e. the response of the people, to determine what is right and what is wrong. I am disappointed in this instance that the masses have spoken and they have spoken in favor of homophobia at worst, and blatant insensitivity, at best. This post and these comments are not how I would want Armchairgm to be broadcast to the larger community. I think it makes us look terrible.

The thing of it is...is for all anyone knows, since none of us are mind readers, Tyrone could have been using the short term for man, as homosapien is the scientific term.

One final point that just occured to me. Another avenue to express your disapproval is to simply ignore the user. I believe that if you select to ignore a user's comments it actually affects their rankings as well.

Do not ban Tyrone. I think that this would be a huge detriment to the Armchairgm community. Whether you agree with his views/opinions or not, they are his opinions. There are just some buttons that one needs to avoid when talking to him. This is true of quite a few users here. When you get to the point of banning someone, who decides when enough is enough?

I think that we all agree that Pnatt/Pnatt II needed to be banned. Does Tyrone fall into the same category? Not by a long shot.

In the beginning, I had issues with Tyrone, but I worked those out. And even "friended" him, eventually. Should gay bashing terminology be allowed on this site? No way, in my opinion. But the term "homo" is used in the gay community. I, personally, know of no homosexual man or woman that is offended by the term. If it is OK with them, why should it not be OK here?
