Jay Bruce is Kinda Good

Posted by MegECass110

The rookie just hit a walkoff homer in the 10th inning to beat the Braves, 8-7. It was an absolute bomb, like Adam Dunn territory at the Great American Ballpark.

So far, in 5 games, Bruce (who Cincinnati fans have started calling Broooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooce) is hitting .556 (.667 OBP) with three RBIs, and he's struck out only once.

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a future superstar in the making. Of course, it's only five games, but daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

Oh, and the 2005 amateur draft, where Bruce was drafted 12th overall (out of high school), also included Justin Upton, Ryan Zimmerman, Ryan Braun, and Troy Tulowitzki. And Jacoby Ellsbury, Matt Garza, Mike Pelfrey, Alex Gordon, Yunel Escobar, and Micah Owings. I'm not much of a baseball draft historian, but that's pretty ridiculous.

It shouldn't surprise anyone here at the chair. Just read Kelsdad's minor league updates every once in a while. He's seen Bruce coming for the longest time now...

I'm not surprised. It's just that sometimes minor league prospects don't always work out. It's good to see he's doing so well so quickly.

If you get a chance to watch Baseball Tonight's highlights, please do so.

In the first inning, Bruce singled to right immediately before Griffey launched #599. It is absolutely scary how much alike these two guys look in the box and in their swings.

Ridiculuous.

I read Kelsdad's stuff, visit BaseballAmerica.com, leark around MLB.com, and I've been doing fantasy baseball for the longest time. Major League Baseball, as far as players are concerned, is very easy to follow. But Romi, I have the added advantage of having MLB coverage on my television here in the US ;)

So does Kelsdad, and anyone else who follows baseball fairly well. It's all good though. I'm finally getting points due to my decent pitching staff. Now that I'm getting Justin Upton, I hope to have a quality outfield of my own. ;)

He was the part of the reason for that Utely trade I made last week. My buddy Dave wanted to open a roster spot for this kid, he's a cincy homer.  ;) (yes our league has homers from several cities.) Say what you will about fantasy sports, but for me it has opened my eyes to players I would not otherwise have enjoyed as early.

Side note, what is it about baseball that makes their rookies having good years seem more special? Is it the everyday aspect of the game? Not complaining, just curious.

I think it's because there are so many prospects that don't work out, when someone actually lives up to the hype, everyone is super excited. And this is also a sport where 40-year-olds aren't a rarity, and guys don't reach their prime until they're 26, 27; Bruce is 21. Also because it usually takes a while to go through the minors and work their way up, it's especially rewarding to the player to make it to the Bigs.

I think Meg's comment said it all. It takes a lot of talent, hard work, and patience for someone to get drafted, play in the Minors, and work their way up to the Bigs. In the NBA, NFL, and any other popular American sport you can think of, they don't really do that. Youth is also another good thing that Meg pointed out. Because he's 21, this makes his debut year very special. He's done very well so far, and is living up to his expectations at such a young age. I'm glad he's doing well. Maybe he can be relied on as someone who can score and produce runs for the sucky pitching that the Reds have.

Griffey won't be traded. He has 10 and 5 rights, and he won't approve any trade to a team that won't pick up his option for 2009. And I don't know any GM stupid enough to pay him $16.5 million next year. At least, not any baseball GM.

Well, some teams can afford to throw that type of money around. Even without all the money, he would still like to be traded to the right team. When you tell him that he has a chance to win a world series, he is willing to go just about anywhere. He wants a ring...

Yeah, but those contenders have shown that they're not willing to mortgage their future for aging stars. Especially not injury-prone, 38-year-old corner outfielders that are slugging .388.

I think we're going to have to disagree here. If Seattle was, you know, contending, instead of having the worst record in the AL, then we could talk. He's said publicly that he wanted to return to Seattle. But I don't think it'll happen. He won't want to go anywhere else.

Why? The Mariners are a much better team than their record shows, I fully expect them get back in it, Griffey could make the difference. Especially considering he'll DH 60% of the time, if not more. Keeping him off the field will help his legs stay healthy, which will make him even more dangerous.

I realize they're not this bad, but there's no way they get back into this division race. They have the 26th-best team OPS in baseball, and while getting rid of Jose Vidro would help, but they're back 12 1/2 games. With a Griffey in his prime, they might have a chance, but now, he'll be another mediocre player on a poor offensive team. Ichiro is really the only above-average offensive player they have right now, and they don't have the pitching to make a run against the Angels. The Mariners won't make the playoffs this year, and now they're taking on a year and a half of a contract that would essentially cripple them next year. Not to mention that it'll drain their system of more prospects, which is made even worse in light of the loss of Adam Jones and George Sherrill for an oft-injured Erik Bedard.

From what I heard, it's either of the two scenarios you mentioned, but not both.

The Reds are desperate to get out from underneath Griffey's deal, as the Mariners are with Richie Sexson. Both teams will pool an equivalent amount of money and basically "buyout" the remaining $$ on each deal. I know the option on Griffey's 2009 has a buyout, not sure on Sexson. If the parties agree on a financial swap, then no ML roster players or prospects will be included.

If the teams can't agree on the $$ part of it, or if the Commissioner's office steps in, which is possible considering the amount of money involved, then there will have to be some compensation in the form of players.

I also know Griffey's agent has been talking with Seattle, as far as a contract goes with the Mariners, that part is done.

Heard that Griffey Jr. has Braves on his list of teams he would accept a trade to. I just can't get excited about Griffey as I used to be. It is not very easy to get excited about 6 homers and 27 RBI's when considering the major league leaders have 21 homers and 65 RBI's. He is 5th on the Reds in homers and 4th in RBI's. His .255 batting average is 8th on the team. Having said that only Jeff Francoeur has better numbers among Braves outfielders than Griffey Jr.
