Hilary Clinton calls for Olympic Opening Ceremony Boycott

Posted by False Prophet

Matt Drudge has reported that Presidential Candidate Hilary Clinton has called for a boycott of the Opening Ceremony at Beijing this summer. This marks the first major US politician to say this.

Is it right to boycott the Opening Ceremony? What should be done about the Beijing Olympics? Should athletes boycott the Olympics, or any part of it?

This really isn't a story about sports, or about politics. It's an issue of politics within the sports world.

EDIT: This has now been confirmed by ABC News

I don't really care who it is. The fact that a major US politician is calling for this is remarkable, and brings up a lot of questions both politically, and for the good of the game

I think that a boycott of the opening ceremony is wrong. It's supposed to be a celebration of sports, not of politics. However, if something should be done, it should be a boycott of the entire olympics. If the US attends the olympics, its not right to boycott the opening ceremony

Doesn't work, sadly. They're there to represent their country, not themselves. Alexei Varakov v Sanjay Kirpal v Chin Sung Lee v Mark White would be fine, but they'll be there in Russia, India, China and UK attire. Because they're in country mode, politics is always at the forefront of it.

The torch procession yesterday was hilarious. In London, there were protesters that were on about Tibet and Human Rights problems. Then by the time it got to Paris, the torch bearer had to jump on a bus to stop the protesters putting the flame out. They succeeded twice. :P Usefully, there are 21 torches for various public events. A bit of a fix, really.

It's interesting -- there was (in the US) a lot of noise about it seven years ago, but mostly from the hard right (anti-commie) and hard left (free Tibet) crowds. My take: I'd love to see the US boycott the Games -- but we shouldn't because we're already the world's urinal, and can't afford to be more imperial.

I'm not good at this politics thing (hate it as well)....but shouldn't common sense tell you this? The US of all countries, who is currently having a war with Iraq, is asking China to stop fighting with Tibet.

I don't know. International politics is not my strong suit. The control of Taiwan has been moving aroung for centuries. Since the late 80's China has been returning power in Taiwan back to the Taiwanese people. In 2007, the Taiwanese adopted their own constitution, etc. and they want their independence.

It's all very confusing to me. I don't read enough on it.

The Tibetan situation is also confusing. China took control of Tibet approx 50 years ago right? The Tibetan people want their culture preserved.

And people call the US a bunch of Imperialists.

I don't remember an economic recession during the Bill years. Though I don't like Hillary, I could think of a few better people in Washington to boycott.

Economic theory generally dictates that the president from the previous term or terms (up to about 12 years) is responsible for most major economic trends...so Bill can thanks Bush and Reagan i suppose

As for Dubya, while he should share some of the blame, I'd be more apt to blame it on Clinton...

Regardless, we'll not how great Bill was in 20 and 30 years when we can feel the effects of Medicare & medicade...if we get that far before someone socializes medicine

Politics and sports do not go together. It's one thing if it's all fun and games like Obama and McCain going head-to-head in the tourney pool, but this is a stupid call on her part (if Drudge is right).

Jimmy Carter boycotted the Moscow Olympics in '80 and that was the final nail in the coffin for his hopes of another term in office.

When you inject world politics into the Olympics, you only cause chaos. I'm trying to watch the Olympics, not CNN.

Like it or not, sports and politics intersect quite often. As a few others said above, boycotting the opening ceremony is meaningless. If they really want to say something, they need to boycott the whole thing.

Ok so here is the deal, we have a trade agreement with China, money making ventures in China are overwhelming, its the most populated country in the world. What Justin said about the Presidency is true. Clinton should take into consideration the ramifications this would have on her if she won the presidency. The candidates running especially on the Democract side have much more to worry about than the Summer Olympics.

Bottom line: You either boycott the Olympics or you support the Olympics. Boycotting the opening ceremonies would be a slap in the face to the rest of the world and we would lose any REMAINING respect we'd have from the rest of the world. And don't think the world won't see the hypocrisy in all of this while we're involved in a senseless war that's killing hundreds and thousands of innocent lives and people all for the profit of a few. Talk about a violation of human rights. And another aspect that isn't being mentioned. Because of this idiotic war that we're involved in, we're in a huge deficit. Because we're in this deficit, this {expletive deleted} turned to whom...China for aid and they have invested in U.S government bonds for the past few years to help cut the deficit. So this country is not in a position and does not have the leverage to pull such a move.
