Help with Koji Uehara's Page?

I'm writing up encyclopedia pages for Japanese players who are likely to end up in MLB next year. I'd appreciate help on Koji Uehara's page.

Kosuke Fukudome's is pretty good, and you can use that as an example.

Thanks!

Dan

Nah. They're still superstars in Japan. And there's a WBC in, what, 2010? :)

Being a superstar in Japan equates to being a superstar in Scranton. Nobody is calling them, if they end up in the states its because each has a good agent.

I have to disagree...this is akin to what could/would happen if a real league existed in the caribbean...its more of a tribute to good scouting (and a budget) then an agent...

Well, yeah. Good scouting finds some kid in the Dominican Republic after riding a bus for three hours. Seeing someone in Japan is the same as seeing a college kid in the states. Just buy a ticket and go. Which is the point, if these guys were good enough, they'd be here already. Japan is much better than it was 15-20 years ago, but from top to bottom, they're level of play is substandard. Kaz Matsui was a superstar in Japan...

If that were true, we'd be watching the ichiro chase for the hits record right now/pretty soon and be watching matsuzaka win his 200th game...why weren't they here earlier...

There's a rule in Japan that you're committed to playing there for ten years, I guess its their version of free agency. Dice K and Ichiro and Matsui were "bought out" of their agreements, hence the bidding payment. So, if guys are good enough they can be here at a younger age, othewise, everyone waits for the ten year mark and then they're legitimate free agents, open to anyone. At bargain prices, because the player has no negotiating power. If he wants to play in the states bad enough, he'll do it for next to nothing. These guys might be All Stars in Japan, here, they'll be lucky to make a roster, and, at their ages, won't get big bucks or a long term deal. We're not looking at the next Ichiro's here, we're looking at the next So Taguchi's.
