Great Read on the Downfall of "Baseball Tonight"

Although we don't usually share links like this, I thought this was an interesting read.

http://clevelandtribeblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/baseball-not-tonight.html

I used to absolutely LOVE watching Baseball Tonight every night. It was informative, entertaining, and helped fuel my fantasy baseball addiction. For the past few years though, I've only caught a few here and there. I just attributed it to not having enough time to watch it etc. However, now that I think about it, the author of the article is completely right. Its almost unwatchable.

Does anyone still religiously watch Baseball Tonight?

Damn straight...but it gets annoying... I never watched it constantly, but I go through fits of watching it all the time...its morphed into a shell of its former self in that its a lot more BS talk...Until I hear "fire up the organ" again, I really don't consider it the same...

I used to love Baseball Tonight as well, but the author is 100% correct, it's become a joke. John Kruk is a bona fide idiot and Steve Phillips (who couldn't have run the Mets further into the ground if he'd tried) somehow manages to be even stupider than Kruk. Add in never-right guests like Dusty Basker and Buster Olney, and it's a wonder Karl Ravech didn't put a bullet in his brain years ago. While they're at it, I recommend they bring in Around the Horn regulars Woody Paige, Jay Mariotti, and Bill Plaschke (hell, throw in Skip Bayless, too), just to gather a collection of the world's biggest morons in the same place -- and then bomb the studio. Okay, so maybe that's a bit extreme! I guess I'd be satistified if they were simply thrown out of the country forever. That seems fair.

Pretty much I agree...I think yuo don't give Kruk enough credit...he's smarter than you think and "[His] wife doesn't find him as disgusting as she used to" Don't even get me started on how much I loathe Bil Plaschke...loath...If it weren't for Michael Smith, I would never even consider watching that show... And everytime I see steve phillips say this was a good move or that was a bad one, i just laugh...how would/does he know?

Good article, and better point. Not just about BBTN, but the other shows as well, ESPN Classic used to be can't miss TV, now, it shows mostly unwatchable crap I couldn't bear watching when it was aired live. Some shows, like SportsCenter, need a Kenny Mayne type personality to keep things loose when talking about nonsense like the XGames, but a show dedicated specifically to one sport should be serious in nature, like Baseball Tonite or GameDay.

Oh, you mean ESPN Classic Bowling? :) I guess they figured it was cheaper to show old crap they owned the rights to (Cheap Seats, Schwab, bowling, etc.) than actually pay one of the leagues for old NBA or NHL games. I should say that they're not 100% to blame -- the advent of the NFL Network and NBA TV made some of those old games unavailable to ESPN. But it's still sad, because I loved ESPN Classic a long time ago, but I haven't watched it in years.

Right, and old boxing. Louis, Marciano, Sugar Ray (Robinson), great stuff. Did see some old NBA from the '60's there for awhile, so maybe they had them on loan and decided not to purchase. Schwab, what a dork. Guy runs the research department at ESPN, has access to all the answers. Then some genius decided to give him his own show, answering trivia questions he already knows the answer to. Go out on a limb, why don't you. Riveting television.

The best thing ESPN has is ESPNEWS (tough to mess that up) and its Magazine. However, I hate Dan Le Batard with an extreme passion. I'll still watch SportsCenter, but Baseball Tonight has gotten ridiculous. If they changed it to a program where Karl Ravech just talked by himself for an hour, I would be just fine.
