I think by far my fave contribution to Franks article (other then the re-poster calling it a conter-intuitive conclusion) was this comment by one particularly absurd individual that believes that Blacks still picked cotton regularly through de-segregation:

"And with the old timers, up to about the 1970s, if you couldn't pitch anymore because your arm hurt, you went to a real job. Especially Negro League guys, your arm hurt, well go pick cotton. Real motivation to pitch through the pain.

Well, I think it's implied the Negros leagues were well gone by the '70s - although, maybe there's more than we know??? But it also disregards the fact that machines have been picking cotton for as long as baseball has been played.

There is so much contradiction, he is talking about old timers AND guys in the 70s? Then he says that you would have to get a real job back in the day, and goes out of his way to mention Negro Leagures, then places them in a slave situation that is 100 years outdated? WTF was all I could think

The thought was supposed to be - without the supreme ignorance -before the big money took over the sport, there were less reported injuries. Guys that got hurt got replaced.

I don't think there is any evidence that athletes get hurt MORE today than in previous decades. In fact, I personally believe that guys get hurt less on par - if you discount the guys who get hurt BECAUSE of steroid abuse.

It's well documented that guys played hurt more in the past than they do now. They used to be players, now they are investments... increased caution is not a symbol of a pussified sports society.

They didn't train in the offseason, they worked regular jobs because pro sports didn't pay well for the non-box office name players.

The average careers for athletes among ALL sports is greatly increased over the past several decades, that's proven - so I don't see how Frank could assume that injuries have increaased just because the media scrutiny is higher..

Mickey Mantle, for instance would have played a more effectively and a lot longer with today's medical advances. And Mark Prior's health wouldn't have been a scrolling news item in the 50's

I am discovering that a lot of the head scratching questions about Sports pre 1975 and sports post 1975 are answered quite simpily: Sports wasn't an American institution before 1975.

WHAAAAA? No way, dude. If anything sports were BIGGER then because there was LESS options for entertainment/escape. Like, there was no internet... video games, VCR players, CDs, cell phones, etc.

I mean - am I missing something. Did he tell you guys off, or did he simply voice an opinion (direct violation of what appears to be article #438 in the AGM Guidelines)?

That's the million dollar question Frank. It is especially intriguing because one would think that we would want AGM to be shown in the most positive light.

I went over to baseballmusings and found another comment!

Hilarious!

"Shoulders are just like teeth according to the author...

Of course this "author" also wrote such masterpieces as this -http://www.a..._is_So_Great

If anyone is telling their 7 year old to throw more, they WON'T have to worry about their kid getting arm injuries in the majors because they'll be done playing by the time they are 10.

My favorite leap of faith comes here:

"they are saying they have never witnessed so many shoulder and elbow injures in young athletes. Reasons why the numbers are up? BECAUSE THE PARENT'S ARE NUTS and when a kid has any pain they run them into the doctor with fear of their future all-star injuring it further"

So according to the "author" - arm injuries are up because THE PARENTS ARE NUTS...

yeah, that the crux of the theory - Good one, "Frank"!!!

What a load of bovine feces...
