Just kidding...who cares anymore...There have been 138475739294975020 locker room discussions on them and they are old, so I am going to start a NEW TOPIC

I am planning on writing an article on a debate a friend and I had. Which era of baseball players was best, I am currently doing research (A LOT) to justify my opinions an dI think that article will be a great one. I just wanted to know your guys' opinions on the matter.

This is kind of like asking would Babe Ruth be as good if he played today or would Johan Santana be better today or back in the 30s? Stuff like that.

Or what if Ruth were to hit against Kofax? That would be a good one too. Go for it!

I personally think Ruth would not have been as good against pitchers in modern times due to his swing had such horrible mechanics...but take Ruth in modern era, he would have most liekly been in a tad bit better shape and would have most likey had better mechanics, put that Ruth in his era and he totally dominates, it's like a never ending cycle

I love these sort of arguments and discussions. They are so frustrating but I always find myself delving into them. I wont lie I'm not a big enough baseball guy though to provide any legit help though.

Can you imagine lviing in the day of Ruth and Satchel Paige...when Paige was in his prime he palyed in the negro leagues, but during MLB off-season the MLB players would put together barnstorming teams and play Negro-League teams and Paige in his auto-biography would state that he showed that big MLB player what was up...God I would give up my soul to watch that matchup, being as Paige is one of my favorite players EVER

I've always wished I could have seen Satchel pitch. His numbers and the stories are absolutely Amazing.

He pitched SO much in his prime...

Maybe I'll pitch forever was the best book I have ever read in terms of biographies, it was awesome...it was such a shame that he came into the majors at such a late age, but at least he did...everyone back then thought it would be him not Jackie Robinson to start the integration.

Yeah, thats part of what makes him so amazing, he was good in the MLB and he was in his 40's I believe by the time he got there. As far as integration goes, there were several players who had more talent than Jackie who could have gone first, but none had the personality. Page was way to cocky and arrogant to cross the color barrier

OH GOD was he ever cocky, that's also why I absoluetly loved him...My fav player ever was Ty Cobb, also a cocky son of a ... If I am correct Paige was 42-43 when he first pitched in the majors...I could be wrong, but I am 100% sure he was in his forties. Yet he still pitched great. Yes, the Negro Leagues was full of great players, it is such a shame about how all that went about

Ty Cobb was extremely cocky, I am not a fan of his because he held to his southern roots a little too much you could say. Page was also insanely cocky but thats part of what made him so interesting. I think you are right about him being round 42 or 43 thats what I was thinking. The separation of the Negro league and the MLB is s abig reason I do not give as high of value to many of the older records in MLB since they were only playing against half of the available players.

EXACTLY! On the part about playing half of available players. Another thing I will try to takcle. Gosh imagine Walter Johnson versus Josh Gibson!

On Ty Cobb, that is one thing I don't like...poor guy had no friends either, but yea his racism was a major character fault. I am a fan of cocky players though, as I hold that trait.

The answer is always going to be that today's players are better than yesterday's. Here's why:

physical conditioning is much better

free agency motivates players to perform more

there are players from all over the world in the bigs

When you start getting into the "if babe Ruth were alive today" stuff, the argument loses all weight. Babe Ruth lived and played when he lived and played. Any theorizing on the matter is pure fiction.

Satchel Paige was only 2 days past his 42nd birthday when he pitched his first major league game. In his 179 games in the majors he never made an error.

Thank you Niteowl, I should have known that you had the answer to that question. But wasnt there even some question about the validity that he was 42, I feel like I heard a rumor that he was actually in his mid 40's or that they were never sure of his actual age.

Consider this: Jesse Owens was the fastest guy in the world during the 1936 Olympics. High school kids (very good ones) run that fast now. Extrapolate to baseball and other team sports. In my opinion, Babe Ruth would be, at best, a marginal player today. Just like Jesse Owens would not win the Texas High School State Championship in the 100 yard dash today.
