First Article for my college Newspaper
Here it is. The first article I have put together as Sports Editor!!!
“Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.” -- Genesis 32:24
After hitting the snooze button repeatedly, the young men of the Lassen Wrestling program head to the gym just before 6:30 a.m. They spend the next hour and a half conditioning by running and weight lifting until their limbs feel like Jell-O. After being physically drained, the wrestlers become mentally drained by attending classes during the afternoon. Once again, they head back to the gym at 2:30 p.m. for two more hours of practice. Now they go over their wresting techniques and make sure they are ready to achieve their goals. This is the daily routine from Monday through Friday, but don’t think they get Fridays off. On Fridays the wrestlers get the privilege to go over to the Biz Johnson Trail and run for 6 ¾ miles.
“We have a good group of kids that have a better work ethic and are more hardworking that last year’s team,” said head coach Joe Arminas. “Don’t get me wrong, last year’s team was very hardworking.”
Last year the Cougars not only won their respected conference championship and went undefeated in duels, but they also finished third place in regionals and third place in state. Arminas said a team must show hard work and commitment to gain those achievements. He also pointed out that the majority of this team has the necessary leadership skills to achieve their goals.
The team doesn’t have official captains at this point in the season, but Arminas pointed out that returners Charlie Brown and Anthony Clay have stepped up early on this season. He added on to the captain discussion with, “Captains can change throughout the season. They rise above others by winning their matches, hardest worker, but mainly leading by example.”
