Ed Reed: One of the Greatest Safeties in history...What!?!?

Posted by Behbigben15

Ok, so I was on Sirius Satellite Radio's website looking up their scheduled sporting events for tonight since I will have no time to go anywhere because of my Driver's ed class.

And I happened to notice their poll results for greatest team of all time. The results of the safety category is as follows:

Ronnie Lott 33% (doesn't surprised me at all)

Ed Reed 23%

Darren Woodson 22%

Rod Woodson 6%

Troy Polamalu 6%

Charlie Waters 3%

Ken Houston 3%

Paul Krause 2%

Larry Wilson 1%

Willie Wood%

Well, there is many things wrong with this poll. But I'll just cover the most important things. Reed, and Polamalu aren't even the best active safeties of all-time (this coming from a Steelers fan).

[edit] Reed's Career Stats:

370 total tackles (316 solo), 75 PD, 4 sacks, 5 FF, 34 INT, 3 defensive TD's

So, first off, Reed hasn't even been in the NFL long enough, just 6 years. If I had to pick the best active safety, I would go with John Lynch, and Darren Sharper. I agree with the winner, Lott, but I don't know about the rest. Rod Woodson should be higher than six percent. What do you AGMers think about this poll??

I know Woodson played safety for a while, but he will always be a corner to me. yeah, 23% for Reed is silly.

[edit] Other notable Poll Results:

DE:

Howie Long, and Deacon Jones win the DE position. Long led all DE's with 30% of the votes, while Jones was a close second (26%). Ed "Too Tall" Jones, and Bruce Smith were other notable candidates, and I believe that Smith should have won over Howie. But, apparently other football fans don't think that same way I do.

Jerry Rice (obviously), and Randy Moss are apparently the NFL's greatest WR's. Rice got 38% of the votes, while Randy got 22%. Don Maynard, and Steve Largent came in 3rd, and 4th in fan voting.

They haven't set up the polls yet. So, QB, RB, FB, and LB hasn't been decided yet.

Here's the link to the poll:

Hopefully it'll work.

Love Howie Long, but he barely barely deserves to be an all time great. Check out the stats on one Dexter Manly Mr. Deeeez... Same time period as long better stats and gets no love outside DC

That's exactly what I was thinking, Jut. But, White is listed on here as the starting DT, along with my man, Mean Joe Greene (even though he's kinda before my time).

Reggie White...and it's not close? Hoo boy. This debate could go on for a while. Here are the DEs in the Hall:

Doug Atkins (DE) 1953-1969 Elvin Bethea (DE) 1968-1983 Willie Davis (DE) 1958-1969 Fred Dean (DE) 1975-1985 Carl Eller (DE) 1964-1979 Len Ford (DE) 1948-1958 Dan Hampton (DT-DE) 1979-1990 David (Deacon) Jones (DE) 1961-1974 Howie Long (DE) 1981-1993 Gino Marchetti (DE) 1952-1964, 1966 Andy Robustelli (DE) 1951-1964 Lee Roy Selmon (DE) 1976-1984 Reggie White (DT-DE) 1985-1998, 2000 Jack Youngblood (DE) 1971-1984

I'm not sure that it can be said that its not even close looking at this list.

The offensive line is made up of not one, but TWO Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Webster was the obvious winner at center, and surprisingly former Steeler G, Alan Faneca, is the starting RG. Faneca beat out Randy Cross, Larry Allen, and Gene Upshaw, coming second only to John Hannah.

Take this poll again in five years, and Adrian Wilson will be in the top three.

i dunno about that, but your point is certainly valid...clearly whoever's voting is young and slightly uninformed...

Reed might be the best active, but the only way he cracks a top list is if he has at least a 1 in front of his number...and probably a 2 if you stop it right here...

I'm a little disheartened that Palomalau makes the list, but Brian Dawkins doesn't get mentioned...Dawkins is probably hall of fame bound...

I'll take Darren Sharper over Wilson. But, Wilson is highly underrated. When was the last time you heard his name in the news, or even the Cardinals' highlight reel??

I'm going to have to never look at these polls again. It's insane. How could Krause get only 2% ? He has the most career interceptions! And Emlen Tunnell, who is second on the list, isn't even there. Rod Woodson, who is third, should be higher than 6%. I have to stop looking. Darren Woodson isn't even listed as one of the top 238 on the career list.

Scratch that. After lookign through everything, Rod should actually be above both Darren and Reed on the Safety list. Wow, that is rather ridiculous.
