Doug Davis returns tonight
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis, who has been out of action since undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer on April 10th, returns to action tonight against the Atlanta Braves. As we all did last season, and again this past week with the return from cancer of the Red Sox' Jon Lester, this is a cause for celebration and recognition. Davis isn't recovering from Tommy John surgery, he didn't break his hand punching a dugout wall, and he didn't otherwise injure himself. He is recovering from a potentially life threatening situation, and while not the same as lymphoma (Lester), cancer is still cancer.
If you happen to have a dish, or watch Braves games on TBS, or have a subscription to MLB.TV, I urge all of us here at the 'chair to tune in and watch an inning or two, just as a way to show respect to Davis and what he has endured over the past six weeks. It doesn't matter if baseball is your favorite sport, it doesn't even matter if you like it. You're not watching for the baseball, you are watching for the moment.
Don't miss it.
