Did Jay Mariotti Plagiarize the 'Chair?

In his column today on ArmchairGM fave Kosuke Fukudome, Jay Mariotti tells us how to pronounce the Japanese star's name:

All together now: "ko-SUE-kay ... foo-koo-DOUGH-may"

That looked immediately familiar to me. Why? Well, because yesterday, Al from Bleed Cubbie Blue asked me how to pronounce it, given that I've become an accidental expert on the guy. I replied back with an I-don't-know, and gave him my best guess. I also added that guess to the Kosuke Fukudome page here, and it says "ko-SUE-kay foo-koo-DOUGH-may". If that looks similar -- heck, identically except for the ellipses, there's a reason. It is. And a quick Google search suggests heavily that no one else has used that pronunciation.

So what? It's, as our page says, is how the name is often pronounced.

The problem is that my pronunciation is basically made up. It's highly unlikely that anyone else concocted it the same way, for the following reasons:

  • My pronunciation is, "grammatically," awful. It should be "koh-SOO-kay foo-koo-DOH-may", for consistency's sake.
  • I've heard many pronunciations, including "koh-skay" and, for his last name, emphasis placed on koo, doh, and may. In fact, Al ended up using "koh-skay" even after he asked me, suggesting that our page may be wrong. I'm trying to get an answer on that from some experts.
  • I added the pronunciation to the page early yesterday. Since then, the Sun-Times -- Mariotti's own newspaper! -- has had a link on the front of its sports page to our page.

So, there you have it: pretty damning proof that Mariotti failed to cite his sources, even when his newspaper was linking to us anyway. We're a wiki, here, Jay, and we're reliable, but you should cite your sources -- especially in case we're off by a bit.

wait...you guys don't know how to pronounce it?

I checked the AGM page and was telling people (with pride!) that the way listed on his AGM page was correct...

uh oh...

citing sources is overrated anyways ; - )

Hah!

Look, I think that my pronunciation of Fukudome's name is right, but I'm not 100% sure. "Often pronounced" is accurate, but that doesn't mean that we're pronouncing it right, you know? It's like Chone Figgins -- I guarantee that, until you were told otherwise, you pronounced it phonetically.

The problem here is that Mariotti almost certainly got the pronunciation from us, and gave us no credit.

Perhaps his parents couldn't spell Shawn? Or "Sean" as we sometimes spell it (it comes from the Irish). Or "Shaun" as we also spell it sometimes...

I only say that because I have a friend called Danial because his parents didn't realise that it was supposed to be spelled "Daniel". Perhaps the same thing happened here?

And yes Facktard is paranoid about what is written about him* in the blogs. We are collectively referred to as "Internet Creatures". Go to findarticles.com and search Jay Mariotti Internet Creatures for further collaboration.

Facktard doesn't show up to sporting events let alone participate in charity events. However, the pundit will bitch and moan about anyone else's attempts at philanthropy. As for your suggestion, I am up for the challenge. After all, I once sparred in my youth for extra cash.

But I think I could hurt him more. You're too close, too emotionally charged from the situation. I wouldn't let loose emotions distract me from precisely pummelling the hell out him. I would love to beat the shit out of someone on creativity's behalf (I'll hit him after he's down, just for you!)

I had never been to Mariotti's site before. I love how they have the picture of him standing tall and looking at the camera like some sort of beast that will eat your children if you try and argue with him. What a clown.

Plagiarism isn't unlawful, just unethical. No one claimed it was a copyright violation (it'd be a de minimus one at best). So I'm not sure what lawsuit you're talking about.

This is a very basic look at pronunciation of romanized Japanese from my Japanese Philosophy class - thought it might help you out a bit.

Vowels: do, re, mi, fa + u as in “put”

Long vowels: ō and ū sounded the same but pronounced for twice as long

All vowels pronounced separately (not as dipthong): “geisha” is “ge + i+ sha”

Consonants: close to English but: g always hard as in “get” never pronounced as j (as in “generous”) y is always a consonant (as in “young”) never a vowel (as in “baby”)

All syllables are equally stressed/accented

Has Mariotti made a career out of plagiarism or what? He has quite a history of putting things in his columns that were originated on Chicago sports talk radio, such as "Andy MacFail." What a bum!

DNL, you could be responsible for everyone saying his name incorrectly. You could have started a piece of General Ignorance, whereby everyone says that, even though his name sounds nothing as you described (potentially). We will always be able to track you down to your moment of madness. It's all your fault!

That's not that bad, (unless your first name is Gaylord) but I'm sure you've had your share. Funny story - I had a client named Richard Suck once. He said "it's pronounced Sook" - I said "Sure it is, Mr. Suck." but I really wanted to say "mind if I call you 'Dick', Mr Sook?"
