Debate: Announcers calling a no-hitter.

Posted by The Pip

Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo, Boston Red Sox announcers for NESN, were discusing this the day after Lester's no-hitter. They have called 3 or 4 of these so they've been in the situation and have done things both ways.

The debate is whether or not announcers should tell the audience that there is a no-hitter being worked on.

This is a great debate. I say they have an obligation, and Orsillo even mentioned that if we tell them in the 6th inning that the pitcher is working on a no-hitter and someone is flipping past the game, they'll stay and watch. But he also understood the superstitious nature of baseball players and fans. For the record they did not mention it that night, but made sure the statistics were on screen as often as possible to let people know without "jinxing" anything. When Derek Lowe threw his they mentioned it at least 4 times according to them, and with Buchholz's last year they also did not say anything.

What do you think? Is there an obligation to inform the public or to respect the traditions of Baseball?

In this day and age, it's an obligation to inform. That makes more people tune and either listen, watch or both. Pip, your argument is extremely valid.

I think what they did with Lester is best. They didn't mention it until it became a real possibility -- around the end of the 7th or 8th inning I believe.

I think it depends on what the announcers think. If a commentator believes that they will jinx someone if there is a no-hitter, then don't say it; that's your right as an announcer. However, people could tune in to a baseball game if they hear the commentator say that there is a no-hitter going on.

I, personally, would say that there is one if it goes on past the 7th inning. When there is a process of a no-hitter, people could tune in and watch the last couple of innings and then think to themselves "Why the heck wasn't I watching this from the very beginning?" I, personally, don't believe in jinxes. It's not like the pitcher is going to hear you when you announce it. It's like a fan who turns on the TV and checks out the boxscore and says, "HEY! This guy has thrown a no-hitter in 8 innings!" He's not responsible for whether or not he gets the last couple of outs or gives up even one hit. That's basically what I think.

But it looks like Orsillo and Remy have something going here with no-hitters. Mayber Masterson will be next. ;)

I think not mentioning it is the best idea. They can always show the box score.

I hate when they mention it over and over and over again - it's usually pretty damned obvious when it's happening.

It's even more annoying when they talk about it before the 7th inning...

Besides, a no-hitter isn't ALL that special: it takes more luck than anything.

If the announcers are giving the angle on the losing side, they should insert the word "Jinx" into as many jinx sentences as jinxingly possijinx.

...and if a station is banking it's hopes that it gets an audience from people who were just flipping past, then we're ALL in trouble!

I'm waiting for the day Tim McCarver says something like this after the first out by a leadoff batter is made: "Now if he gets 26 more outs like that... in a row... he could throw a no-hitter, or maybe even a perfect game... or even a no-hitter AND a perfect game.

A no-hitter takes more luck than anything? Most no-hitters have a bit of luck and good fortune to help them along the way, but MORE luck than ANYTHING? I don't know about that.

I think that in this day and age it's a lot easier to know if a no-no is going on if you frequent sports sites. I also think they should make a system where you can get text messaged anytime a signifigant sporting event might be happening. EG: a no-no, Kobe scoring 172 points, etc. etc.

Personally, I don't believe in a jinx.I do believe in luck.I've seen no-hitters saved by fantastic catches and lost by a slow roller up the middle.Sometimes balls are hit hard and caught and sometimes excuse me hits drop in.But I've never seen a player get a hit because the announcer says the wrong thing.

ha...

one time, last year during schill's no hit bid, i walked into a bar in the 9th. They were playing the As during a day game (3pm start i think) and it was the 9th when i walked in...

I used to live near by and they always had 2 dollar apps and 2 dollar beers monday-thursday so i took advantage (10 bucks for a nice dinner really) and sat down with 2 friends of mine

the old man beside me leaned over (he was a bit of a jackass) and said "Schilling is pitching a you-know-what"

I laughed and said: "no i don't know what"

He said: "you know...a you know what with all zeros"

And I said: "ooohhh, a no hitter?!"

He put his head into his hands and 2 minutes later, schilling promptly gave up a hit into right field...i chuckled

I remember that game, too. I was out and ESPN radio kept cutting in with updates. I got home and turned on the dish and Schilling gave up a hit to like the second batter I saw. I always blamed myself for turning on the TV, but now seeing it was all your fault, JuT, I suddenly feel much better.

When they have the alerts across the bottom that a no-no is happening, I ALWAYS change the channel and try to jinx the shit out of them. It's always funny as hell!!!

I've never seen a ML no-hitter in person. I have seen two minor league no-no's, including a perfect game, and played in a few, the longest a pitcher went without giving up a hit at a ML game was 7 2/3 innings, (Tom Candiotti).

I watched a no hitter in Little League. He was very dominant, striking out 16 of 18 batters in 6 innings, and walking only one! He was unbelieveable. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was only 11, facing 10-12 year olds!

Announcers think they're players, and a thusly bound by the code of silence. Which is ridiculous. The pitcher can't HEAR the broadcast, so why not talk about it?

I don't believe in curses, jinxes, mojo, or anything of that sort. But I don't think announcers should mention that a pitcher has a no-hitter going. It's tradition. And if you're worried about channel flippers missing out on something special, then they should stop flipping and watch a whole game. How long do you spend watching a game if you're just flipping through the channels? A minute? So should announcers mention it every minutes? Radio announcers, that's a different situation. People listen to games on the radio while driving or doing something else. They often won't listen to the entire game on the radio, so maybe mentioning the no-hitter at around the 7th inning and after would be okay.
