Current MLB MVP Question

Posted by Crackajg

I'm doing a 1/3 of the way through the season awards article -- yes, seriously, and I was having some trouble picking the winner for a couple of the awards, most notably the current MVP race. I have it between Chase Utley and Dan Uggla and there are no separate league awards. It's just the league as a whole. Anyway, who do you think out of those two should be the MVP (there's a separate award for aces)? Or, maybe you can convince me to consider someone else...

Some other awards you can leave feedback on if you'd like:

Fantasy team killer: If applicable, which player that you drafted who was a sure thing has been an absolute bust and killed your chances so far?

Missing the steroids: Which suspected steroid user has had the most noticeable decline now that there is harsher testing?

Better off without them: Basically an LVP. The absolute worst player so far this year.

Soon to be a sporting household name: Which player who was relatively unknown (save for KD of course) in the minors to start the season is on pace to become a superstar?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to answer your questions, but I won't give you reasons why...
  • MVP = Utley
  • Fantasy Killer = Tulowitzki
  • Steroid Missing = Pudge?
  • LVP = Guerrero?
  • STBASHN = Edison Volquez

Okay, well, Lance Berkman is having an insane season... Chipper Jones, too. Between Utley and Uggla I'd pick Utley, but there are other players who have been just as good, if not better. The Ace should be Edinson Volquez, no doubt (1.32 ERA, WTF?). Fantasy killer? Robinson Cano. I didn't draft him, but I feel sorry for whoever did, because he has been brutal. Missing the 'roids? I dunno, Jay Gibbons? LVP: Tony Pena, Kansas City (dude's "hitting" .156/.176/.194). Soon to be a household name: Um, is Jay Bruce too obvious here?

Good luck on the article, Crack.

I think the MVP is quite obvious. You gotta go with Chase Utley.

Philly's team pitching is currently 12th in the Majors in ERA, and 17th in BAA. They really aren't doing so hot on the mound, and don't have an obvious number 1 starter at this point in time. Yet, Philadelphia has a two-game lead over the second-place Florida Marlins in the NL East.

Utley has a .315 BA, and leads all major leaguers in HR's with 21. This guy isn't even the correct definition of a "power hitter". Utley has done excellent all-around so far this year, and gets my vote for the NL/MLB MVP award....But its not like my vote actually counts or anything.

*MVP: Josh Hamilton
  • Fantasy Killer: The entire Detroit Tigers' roster
  • Steroids Missing: Who knows? I'm not getting into it.
  • LVP: Jose Guillen
  • STBASHN: Colby Rasmus (and yes, I realize that he's still in the minors)

MVP: Utley. 1st in home runs, 2nd in RBI's (and that was without Rollins for a month). He really took role in leading his team to where they are now: first place!

(I'd honestly put Berkman over Uggla. But that's just me. Chipper Jones? Maybe... probably not. Uggla has had a really good year, especially after a mediocre April: .255 AVG brought up to .302, 4 HR brought up to 18, 12 brought up to 41.)

Fantasy team killer: Well, for me... the only player the computer automatically drafted for me (originally) that I can remember is Jake Peavy, and he's not doing as well as I had hoped. With him being on the DL, and a 2.91 ERA (0.37 change), he's the only person I can say is a "bust".

Eric Gagne and Gary Sheffield could both easily get the "Missing the Steroids" award. I'm going to say Eric Gagne. At least Gary Sheffield is past the Mendoza Uecker Line. Eric Gagne has a 6.98 ERA in 19 1/3 IP, and is doing a horrendous job for the Brewers when it comes to the 9th inning. No wonder why they put him on the DL.

LVP Award: Hmm... tough one. Eric Gagne could get it in my book. I can't think of anyone else other than Gagne. So, I'm gonna say Gagne.

For the last award, it depends. Do you consider Jay Bruce "relatively unknown"? If so, him, BY FAR. If not, then I would either say Danny Herrera or Cameron Maybin.

My final pick: Danny Herrera

Wow, good stuff. Thanks to everyone who responded -- I'm actually going to split up the article into two parts. The first part will list the awards and nominees so everyone can get a say in and the second will be who won the awards. It'll be based less on votes and more on good solid baseball discussion.

I don't know about that whole Giambi thing. Maybe the mustache is what's gonna bring him out of his slump. He belted a 2-run homer in the ninth tonight to lift the Yanks over the Bjays.

One thing's for sure: it sure ain't that golden thong. Should've kept it to himself because Damon and Jeter took all the luck out of it, now it's worthless.

I was going to put him in but he has twelve HR's... which isn't a crazy amount but still. It does lead me to believe he's somehow still taking a little something something.

I have to go with Josh Hamilton and Chase Utley as MVP choices as of today. Brandon Webb and Cliff Lee would be my choices for Cy Young.
