The cycle is the dumbest "achievement" in baseball, if not all of sports, for reasons just like this. Pedroia could have gotten a cycle, but instead did better and misses the "milestone".
I gave up on the cycle years ago when I was playing Tony LaRussa Baseball (yes, it was that long ago). I was the Braves and Deion Sanders (again: yes, it's been a while) hit a HR and a triple in his first two at bats, and I start thinking cycle. Third at bat: HR. Fourth: HR. Fifth: HR. And I was mad. Then I thought: 4 HR + triple > cycle. Ever since, the cycle is nothing more than a statistical quirk to me. Good for Pedroia.
