My cousin used to work at ESPN -- and I remember him telling me that Chris Berman was a dick. I was hurt at the time, because I'd always enjoyed him. He said Rick Reilly was a dick, too -- that didn't surprise me much.

Chris Berman used to come into my restaurant all the time, we would get the New York Post at the same convenience store and he married the sister of a high school basketball teammate. I probably met him a hundred times and not once was he ever a "dick". And his first contract at ESPN was for 17 grand a year. I kid you not.

I'm not saying that it was true. Hell, to be absolutely honest I think he "met" him once or twice. Not saying he's a bad dude -- I mean, I'm sure some people who've met me once or twice have thought I was a dick. So, I have no problem saying that it isn't true -- it was just my cousin and he generally tells it like it is.

Many driven, creative personalities are jerks in the professional environment. They are driven to succeed at all costs. They expect everyone around them to act the same way and get extremely frustrated when others don't. The man basically created ESPN from the ground up and made it the huge success it is today.
