Can Your Favorite Player be a guy from another era?

Posted by The Beast

A lot of sports fans claim that their favorite player is a guy like Babe Ruth, Joe Namath, Wilt Chamberlein, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, etc. However, many of these fans never watched their favorites players during their prime. Can they truly be their favorite player? Can an 16 year old Red Sox fan claim his favorite player of all-time to be Ted Williams?

I think it depends. I'm a 16 year old Red Sox fan myself. I honestly don't think there's that much of a chance that there can be. For a favorite player, I don't think that you can unless you've encountered a personal life experience with a player, and he got you influenced in the game itself. And then, you start watching all his games or something. Honestly, I don't think you can. You've never watched a person play that often, and I think that a favorite player should be a player that you really like to watch play.

If he's your favorite player, why would he be your favorite player out of all of the other players that you watch on TV and you hear about.

My favorite player is Babe Ruth. I don't need to watch him to say that. Stats speak for themselves, not to mention all the books about him. Favorite book: The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Homeruns.

No offense Insan, but I think that a person should be able to watch many games of Babe Ruth in order to say that he's your favorite player. A book is different because the book is still here and you can read it, but a player...well.. legends never die, but they DO retire, and I think that a person should be able to say "He was my favorite player" and you could be able to tell kids your real opinion of how he played.

Don't forget the movies about him, for example Sand lot. Well a legend to be a kid av. is possible, what if the the father tells his son all the stories and past experienceses or feelings he had towards the legendary player.

Good point, Sal, but I think a "FAVORITE" player is a player that you have to personally watch. Why isn't everyone's favorite player Ted Williams? He's a legend. Amazing hitter. Why isn't every Giants favorite player Willie Mays (many of them are Bonds fans)? Cuz they root for people they watch. Personally, I can't say that I've watched guys like Yastrzemski and Williams play, but I have seen Big Papi play, I've seen Papelbon play, I've even seen Wade Boggs play. All of them are good players, and I think I've made my point.

Who would people choose as a favorite player right now? Guys like Cal Ripken Jr or Tony Gwynn... OR Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig? People nowadays haven't been around that long to see Ruth or Gehrig play, but many people have seen Gwynn and Ripken play. It takes more than just their style of play, or what you've heard. It's about the memories that you have with the player when you watch them play. You see game winning homers, you watch records break, you see this and that, but guys like Babe Ruth? Oh yeah, he's my favorite player. Did you watch him play personally? No, but he changed the game. Did you see how he changed the game? (you see what I mean)

Some of us are older...I saw Gwynn play many a times...and i've seen Cal ripken play in person (and met the guy!) many times...

If you had to ask me, who is my favorite ballplayer of all time, its cal...he truly is a great guy...

But, its because Cal personifies what I admire most, not just in baseball but in people...the kind of balls to go out there and play every day...a testament to hard work, something i think is incredibly important to character...

Someone ask Niteowl who his favorite player is...no offense, but he's seen a solid 30 more years of baseball than most of us...

You lucky SOB JuT. I miss watching both of them play. They are such great players. I loved the early-mid 90s because back then, there was hardly any crap with the steroids issue and stuff. People just played the game, and Gwynn and Cal really excited people. Cal with his consecutive games, and Gwynn almost hitting .400.

Cal's game was a special moment for me... It was 1995, the strike had ended, my dad was bitter and I just loved baseball (I was 10 at the time)...it was a rare game we watched that didn't involve the phils (he hates the phillies)...but it was a bonding moment and one where my dad said "now there's a great man and a great player"...Cal was his guy...

My favorite player is Phil Simms and I never got to watch him in his prime, not live at least. I have seen most of his games because I have a relative that has taped every giants game since the mid 80s so I think it is fair to have a player you didnt see play or didnt see play that much as long as you know alot about the player, watched alot of his games, and have valid reasons for liking them
