Bud Selig - "Ruiner of all things Baseball"

Posted by JuTMSY4

From BadNewsBloggers

Could there be more of an abject failure at someone's job without any type of ramifications? Could any sport continue in success in spite of its incompetent commissioner (ah, Gary Bettman has ruined the NHL's success...and you thought he was the worst). As any major sporting league's leader ever singlehandedly ruined its all-star game, championship and integrity in one 15 year swoop?

That answer is yes. And that man is Allen Huber "Bud" Selig.

Now sports pundits have come out of Selig's side. Gene Wojciechowski says Bud got it right, no team should win on a rain out. John Kruk and Steve Phillps agreed. But finally Jayson Stark hit the nail on the head. Stark, drawing his on conclusions due to the lack of contact with any prominent Phillie (except Chase Utley), suggested the following reasons for the Phillies and all of Philadelphia (as well as baseball) to be upset:

  • They were furious that this game wasn't stopped until Hamels had surrendered the tying run in the top of the sixth, even though the field had begun looking like a veritable Sea World attraction at least a half-hour earlier.
  • They weren't happy that it was started in the first place, since glop had already begun falling out of the sky during batting practice and the worsening weather forecast was the No. 1 topic of pregame conversation -- just ahead of how many layers of clothing they were all going to have to wear to avoid frostbite.
  • And, most of all, they were incensed by the whole situation -- having their best-laid World Series plans steamrolled by the needless rush to play a game in conditions more suitable for the Iditarod than the most important game of their careers.

The fact of the matter is, the Phillies and their fans were ransacked by Bud Selig's thirst for ratings. FOX's tainting of the game for its own thirst for advertising dollars and Mother Nature herself. At least there's one thing that can stop Cole Hamels.

Its at this point where I really do believe there's something else at work. I don't know what winning is like. I almost have the slight feeling that I don't want it to happen. There's comfort in falling apart. I know what the Phils collapse scenario will feel like.

The winning part? Not so much.

Bud Selig is a tool. But he's exactly what MLB wanted and what they deserve. As for the Phillies, they left nine on base. They're getting to the Rays pitchers, and if game 4 is any indication, they're ready to go. Win or lose, the conclusion of this game will be remembered forever in Philadelphia lore.

I hope they take that anger and throw it right back at all the nay sayers and all the folks (Fox and MLB) who don't really seem to want the Phillies to win. I'll stop short of claiming there's a conspiracy. But I do think the game should have been stopped at the end of the 3rd or 4th inning.

I'm not pleading conspiracy really. At least not in terms of MLB or FOX thinking they are fixing games to pork Philly fans (or help the Rays story).

What I do believe is MLB and FOX are ratings whores and a joke. this whole thing was bumbled from the start...

FYI, game is postponed until tomorrow

I agree that Fox and MLB are whoring it up. Appalling, but what else should we expect? This is a spectacle and Fox will stop at nothing to funnel those bucks into the coffers.

I'm glad the game is postponed. I hope the Phils seethe all day today and all day Wednesday. And someone should mention the nine LOB. That should be more than enough incentive. And they can shove it back in MLBs face at the same time.

I hate Bud Selig more than all of you combined. But in this case he did what was right.

The umpires had the grounds crew working on the field EVERY half inning. This field is MADE for Philadelphia's weather.

Not a single player complained to the umpires and not a single player slipped or lost footing during the game. Jimmy Rollins dropped a pop up due to the wind. Baseball DOESN'T stop it's games because of wind...

I was watching the Weather Channel before the game and during commercial breaks and THEY were saying it was supposed to stay light rain and should clear up in the next few hours. Go figure, the weather in Philly didn't do what the forecasters said... THAT never happens! <sarcasm/>

Furthermore my buddy was AT the game and called me in the third inning and I asked him about the weather and he said it really wasn't raining that hard but the cold was the worse part.

And it's pretty hard to get "frostbite" at 40 degrees.

And lastly, NO ONE wanted this game played more than Philly fans in attendance. I was on the phone with my buddy when COPS was on TV and I asked him what the deal was... I could hear them announce the cancelation over the P.A. and people - at the stadium - in the concourse were BOOING because they thought the game should be finished...

FOX airs the event, they don't control it.

Jimmy Rollins dropped the pop up because there was rain in his eyes...if it was just wind, he'd see the ball he was trying to catch...

You can't tell me, this game should have kept going. Look, I'm not suggesting the Phillies win via rainout, I don't think anyone is. What I am saying his MLB was waiting for either a Rays tie or a Phillies offensive explosion to end it. Selig tried to dodge one bullet and ran smack dab into another...

And to top it off...if the rays were winning 2-1, they would have called it...

And in perhaps the best twist of fate ever, i'm reminded of an important event...

You see, lost in The bunk at the bank is the fact that Game 6 has now been postponed...

You know what Game 6 was supposed to contain?

Barack Obama's commercial...

hahahahahahahahahaha...stupid FOX...

What's really going to make this whole thing a travesty is if the Rays win tomorrow and Game Six is on Thursday. Cancelling the travel day would be just another arrow in the heart of both teams. The umpiring has been facking awful, the weather not much better, and the possiblility of two more games in that chicken shit of a stadium in Tampa. Normally, the losing team griping about things is just sour grapes, but I think this year, whoever it is, will have a legitimate reason to bitch.

When you can point directly to multiple (as in 5 or more) plays that were downright missed, hamstrung or just plain screwed up, you know it was bad.

I agree.

Problem is, I can almost guarantee the cancel the travel day...FOX wants to part of a ratings battle on friday and saturday night

If they wanted that, why did they agree to have the WS start on a Wednesday, with game 2 Thursday and Friday a travel day? That seems like poor planning to me...if you're trying to woo the younger audience who has missed a lot of these great games due to school nights.

And the umpiring has been awful, but it really hasn't favored either team. At least it's been pathetic and worked against and for both teams.

If they play Saturday JuT, then they won't be cancelling the travel day. Wednesday Game five, off thursday, then six and seven on Fri and Sat. Plus Cole Hamels in Game seven on regular rest.

Stiles was right, JuT. He wasn't saying the game should have kept on being played. Not to the end of nine innings, if that is what you meant. I was too hard on Selig.

I think they planned the games around not carrying over into November. Period. I don't really know why... To give naysayers one more excuse to complain.

It would make more sense to have the WS potentially finish on a Friday and Saturday. That would encourage or allow nearly everyone, EVEN the young-ones, to stay up and watch the game, to make the sport more popular.

Some great arguments from above though, fellas. Thanks. Don't forget to vote. Vote for universal health care. We don't lose our homes, our savings, our 401K's (called RRSP's in Canada). We only have to avoid getting sick, which is technically impossible.

I mean we don't have to go bankrupt just because some insurance company won't cover us, or our employer doesn't carry insurance, or we're unemployed. However we do have to wait, at times, for services. However, if you are Ed Sprague of the Toronto Jays, you go to the front of the line for an MRI on your knee at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
