Breaking News: Mariners release Richie Sexson

Posted by Kelsdad

The anticipated purging of the Mariners roster has begun, as they today placed Erik Bedard on the 15 day DL and released struggling first baseman Richie Sexson.

Sexson, a career .261/305/937 hitter, suffered a serious shoulder injury in 2004 while with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Following the '04 season, Sexson signed a free agent deal with the M's, and in his first two years played well, averaging .265/34/114. The past year and a half has been a disappointment, to say the least, with a .205/21/63 season in 2007, and a .218/11/30 mark so far this year.

The Mariners are responsible for the remaining seven million owed Sexson on his contract, whichever team signs him will do so for a pro-rated amount of the minimum $405,000, which would come to just under $200,000.

Jose Vidro takes over as the new first baseman, with Tug Hulett recalled to take Sexson's roster spot. Hulett is the son of former ML infielder Tim Hulett.

5-2 says if Bavasi was in charge he would still be around......and would get a 3 year contract extension.

If you head over to some Mariners blogs they are rejoicing like heck.....

You're right that he would still be around if Bavasi was still in charge, and I'm hoping the extension thing is just a joke.

Kenji Johjima is laughin all the way to the bank rightnow. It is a great day as a Mariner fan to see him go though. I am tired of him, and the team, playing uninspired baseball. I almost lost it a couple of times during this last series with Oakland, but then I remembered what kind of year it has been for them and calmed down.

If you watch some of the tv films of Sexson about 5 years ago you will see that today he has a fault in his swing. He drops his shoulder down when the pitcher lets go of the pitch and it causes him to undercut the ball and pop out alot. I think the biggest reason for getting rid of him was the salary cap and by releasing him they increase theirs. Seven million won't come into effect until next season but that still is a lot of money for the Mariners. I still think he has some baseball left in him but it will have to be on the right team. He still does a good job on first but it is his plate command that has suffered the most these last 3 years.

Sexson's approach at the plate has not changed since he started playing. If anything, I think he's gotten pull happy, when he was with Cleveland he went to right center alot.

Uppercutting comes from your hands, not your shoulders.

Baseball has no salary cap.

He'll sign with someone before the waiver period expires on Monday.

A cap means a team can't exceed a certain dollar figure. A luxury tax means there's a soft cap, it can be exceeded but you pay a penalty for doing so.

To me, that's a cap.
