Big Ten Football Overrated...?
Being a Big Ten school Alum (albeit a basketball school - Indiana), I can't help but wonder what the hell has happened to football in this conference. Maybe the timing of this post could have come sooner than the Wolverines tragic yet comedic performance this past Saturday against App...Appal...Applach...oh, forget spelling it right now. But really, should there have even been a discussion about this game other than Hart, Henne, and Manningham...? Nevertheless, the team from Boon, NC (just cause I cant spell it doesnt mean I dont know where it is...! ha) created not just one of the biggest upsets in all of sports, but now has started the debate (or at least reopened it) to what is wrong with football in the Mid-West.
Every year we hear about the strength of the SEC (and it's very warranted) and the rising power of the Pac-10 and the Big East (I didnt even mention the ACC or the Big XII but they're still tough conferences). But for at least the last decade it seems now, the Big Ten hasnt had any real powerhouse teams (lest you count the 2002 Ohio State team or the last year Ohio St team) capable of at least competing for the National Championship.
My question is why... -is it talent lacking in the Mid-West? -bad recruiting from other regions of the country? -unimaginative or non-innovative coaches? -bad pre-conference game scheduling? This is just my rant as I would like to see some more competitive and inspired football coming from this area to compete against the rest of the country. Just look at the conference this year and see you can find a true national championship contender...Wisconsin? Ohio St? Mich-a-who...? Please. I don't think any of those teams could compete with USC, LSU, West Virginia or even Texas/Oklahoma (whoever wins that conference). So, people, comments, thoughts, other rants are welcome.
