Best Sports Rivalry

by user False Prophet

What does everyone think is the best Sports Rivalry? Ground Rules are as follows:

  1. The team must be in a Collegic, Pro, or major individual league (I.E. NASCAR, Formula One, Olympics, PGA, etc.).
  2. The Rivalry must have occured since 1960 (not necessarily started, just continued or started after 1960).
  3. You must explain why it is the best
  4. Rules 1 and 2 can be broken should someone contact be via email or my talk page with a good one that is well known and doesn't meet the requirments.

Let the debate begin!

*Packers - Bears in Football (oldest franchises),
  • Celtics-Lakers (if but for only the first 50 years of the NBA),
  • Giants-Dodgers (most heated rivalry in baseball, regardless of what any American League teams want to argue, these teams did it for 30 years longer AND moved across the country to continue the rivalry)
  • Harvard-Yale in everything (it's funny to watch rich, elitist nerds battle in sport with richer, elitist turds)
  • Canadiens-Maple Leafs in Hockey (they'll be the last two teams left in Canada, or last two teams left in the NHL; whichever comes first)
  • Boston Sports Fans vs. New York Sports Fans - to see who can claim to have "better" fans when ALL they know is how great THEIR team is and the other city's teams suck. Meanwhile they BOTH don't know crap about the sports they talk about because they are both so singlely focused, close-minded and near-autistically myopic.
  • USA-USSR; 1948-'88 Winter and Summer Olympics, (all events)
  • it's too tough to pick out ONE college rivalry, there are too many good'uns. Maybe overall it's Ohio State- Michigan, but there are TONS of great In-State rivalries too... Ariz St -U of Arizona is WAY sicker of a rivalry than I ever knew. Grown, responsible people fight about it EVERY day, not just alum!
  • Gordon-Earnhardt; so-called "fans" have shot each other over this one!

Near any and all instate rivals are bigger and more important than just about anything else out there. Go down to Alabama and ask the Tide and the Tiger fans about it. Ask Oklahoma and OSU fans, or Oregon and OState fans. Local rivalries tend to be some of the most bitter rivals because those are the fans and friends that have to look at eachother day in and day out and cannot escape it.

Best rivalry is USC v. UCLA. For four reasons:

1.) It is a crosstown rivalry. Both schools are just a few miles apart and grads/students/fans are literally neighbors.

2.) It isn't just one sport. From Football to Basketball to Volleyball to Water Polo, every USC-UCLA game is talked about.

3.) The Lexus Gauntlet. Each year the schools compete for the trophy, the most wins head to head between USC and UCLA.

4.) Tradition! Both schools have the more National Championships than any other Division 1 school (including football). UCLA has 99 and USC has about 93. So they have had great players in all sports.

Overall: It is a rivalry that never sleeps.

  • Packers-Bears - oldest NFL teams.
  • Canadiens-Maple Leafs - oldest Canadian NHL teams.
  • Hakkinen-Schumacher - F1, fought for the World Title for three straight years
  • Hill-Schumacher - same as Hakkinen
  • Senna-Prost - fought for F1 title for over five years
  • White-Hendry - Snooker - Hendry beat White in five World Championship Finals
  • Red Sox-Yankees - Top MLB rivalry
  • Celtic-Rangers - Football - not only a cross Glasgow rivalry, but a cross religion one too (Catholic and Protestant).
  • AC Milan-Inter Milan - same as in Glasgow... but in Milan.

  1. Colts-Pats - This is the Cowboys-Redskins/Cowboys-49ers/Packers-Bears of the 21st century, and it has become a rivalry since the Colts finally beat the Pats in the playoffs.
  2. Ali-Frasier - I'm shocked this hasn't come up. When they were both active, those fights were some of the best ever.
  3. Minnesota-Wisconsin - Although this is only competeitive in Hockey, when these two Schools find a sport they are both good at, it is a big rivalry
  4. Woods vs. Rest of PGA - actually, I don't think this is a rivalry because in a rivalry, one side can't dominate the other every time

Ohio State/Michigan football is the best rivalry in sports. They have the most fan hatred towards the opposing schools, they feature the best matchups year in and year out, they have the most historical battles, their players in coaches have an unrivaled amount of hatred andrespect for each other. The football rivalry goes to deep it seeps into the other sports, even the less popular ones like hockey. The closest runner up is UNC/Duke in basketball.

I think most people who attended a school with a top-level football or basketball program will favor the college rivalries. You have more of a personal connection to your team, and those rivalries endure better than the ones in the pros. Really, who cared about Pats-Colts until the last five years? Anyone excited for Celtics-Lakers or Celtics-Sixers these days? And Yankees-Red Sox is just beaten into the ground way too much. Sure, there's plenty of overkill for UNC-Duke basketball and Ohio State-Michigan football games. But those teams don't play 19 times a year, with the accompanying Armageddon build-up each time. As for me, I'm a Tar Heel, so you know where my vote goes today!

Not only were their postseason matchups among the best of all time, they had some memorable regular season series, cuminating with the George Brett pinetar incident. UNC - Duke and Ohio State - Michigan. Both always have huge implications (conference titles, top rankings, even national title). The hatred for the fans is unmatched by these two. But I would go farther to say UNC-Duke is the best. The proximity of the two schools makes interaction between the fans constant and year-round. The teams meet annually, but not 32893829389283 times like Yankees-Redsox, and typically the victor actually matters UNLIKE NFL games. The aforementioned interaction, and the intense hatred, creates a very very odd environment that most of you have never experienced until you have been there. Nowhere else will someone fight you, degrade you, and even more simply over the SHADE of blue on your shirt. You can be refused service in a restaurant, kicked out of stores, even find yourself talking to police for such an infraction (believe me on that last one).

There is so much between the rivalry that extends beyond the hardwood that most people never consider. Both schools claim to be the best academic institutions in the state. UNC is considered a public Ivy (a very high distinction among public schools) and Duke is considered on par with or just under Ivy league, as one of the top private schools in the country. The vast majority of Duke students are out-of-state residents, often from the NY and NJ area while the vast majority of UNC students are in-state residents; which is another point of animosity between the two schools. The institutions are polar opposites in many respects, but claim superiority in academics, particularly medicine, business, law, and a few others, and in sports, most notably to the rest of the country, basketball. Even the historic coaches embody these differences, just compare Dean Smith and Coach K.

Completely different individuals, but both can make legitimate claims to being the best coaches to ever coach the game.
