Baseball n00b needs help!

Greetings all,

I'm enjoy reading some Japanese manga, include some very good baseball manga. I've just started writing about one of such manga on the manga wikia, but when it comes to English jargons and specialized rules of Baseball, I'm a total n00b, so I need some help.

One - Batting order & DH

Situation: In a Baseball World Cup game (not WBC), the catcher is injured. The current DH becomes replacement catcher, so the pitcher has to bat now. How does that affect the batting order?

Batting order in the manga
Order Before After
1 Kojiro (RF) Kojiro (RF)
2 Higuchi (2B) Higuchi (2B)
3 Mitsunaka (1B) Mitsunaka (1B)
4 Matsuo (LF) Matsuo (LF)
5 Toujima (C) Mitamura (CF)
6 Satoh (DH) Satoh (C)
7 Mitamura (CF) Iwaoka (3B)
8 Iwaoka (3B) Kibata (SS)
9 Kibata (SS) Matsuwaka (P)

From reading the Designated hitter article, I would've expected Matsuwaka the pitcher to bat 5th, and everyone else is unaffected. Or another interpretation is that since Satoh is now the catcher, he should bat 5th, where the previous catcher batted, and the Pitcher will bat 6th, where Satoh the original DH batted.

However, the table corresponds to neither expectations. Does it show a completely unconventional (or erroneous) situation? Or am I interpreting the DH article incorrectly?

Two - Jargons etc

Since I'm a total n00b, I may not be using the right jargons when writing about the games. I'd greatly appreciate it if people can help look over Japan vs Venezuela, Dominican Republic vs Japan, and Japan vs USA and fix any stupid wording I made.

Also, I'd love suggestions on how to structure the articles to better present the information, as well as any images I can use to concisely convey information.

Three - Real world player references

A lot of the baseball players are references to real-world professional base ball players, usually with minor alteration on their names. The current list I've compiled is at User:PanSola/Real world character references in the manga Major, mostly based on the Japanese wikipedia data. However I'm pretty sure there are quite a number of other references that are missing.

So please look over the player rosters of Japan vs Venezuela, Dominican Republic vs Japan, and Japan vs USA, and if any names seem to be remotely similar to actual professional baseball players, add them to the list (for the "Fictional" column, just enter the English names found in the articles, don't worry about any Japanese).

Thanks!

As for point one:

There's no rule that the pitcher has to bat in the 9th slot. There *is*, however, a rule that affects the situation you describe. If the player who is named the DH takes the field as a defensive player, the team loses the DH for the rest of the game. There was a game a while back where the Cleveland Indians made that mistake, naming Manny Ramirez the DH, but accidentally sent him out to play right. The pitcher, Charles Nagy, had to bat where the RF (Alex Ramirez) would have been; that is, the 7th spot. See this link.

Hope that helps!

My PS2 baseball game doesn't even give you the chance to make that mistake. You can't put the DH anywhere.

Well, my question is: I thought the "after" batting order is actually against the rules. I thought the rules would require the pitcher to bat 5th, because that's where the original catcher (replaced by the original DH) batted. So is that "after" order against the rules? Or are there different ruleset between the MLB and the International Baseball Federation regarding Batting order when the DH is forfeited? (the game being described above is a Baseball World Cup game, so I would expect it be governed by the IBF rules, if any exist)

DNL, Didn't boston make this mistake once too? Any ideas... Also, not that the rules are the exact same, but typically pitches in young leagues (like High school in my town for example and definately younger ones like middle school) have the pitcher bat in the middle of the order because he is usually a very good hitter as well...

Manga is the Japanese word for "comic". When used in English, it most commonly refers to comics of Japanese origin specifically (as opposed to its usage in Japanese, which would refer to all comics in the world in general).

Here's my theory. If the player who replaced the catcher came from any other position, his spot in the lineup would not change and the new entrant would take the spot of the vacated player's...therefore the pitcher would bat int eh DH's spot...

That's MLB's rule. I don't know if the IBF has different ones.

It seems logical...This probably wouldn't happen anyway (You might use your em, or you could just doubleswitch the pitcher out or something...is it an IBF rule that the DH goes away if he plays a position? I assume so...

This is my thinking. The exact lineup remains the same. You cannot change the batting order once a game has begun. So I would suggest that what ought to happen is that the Pitcher comes in for the DH, and everyone else just swaps position, not batting order.

So in the examle above, the P would bat 5. The position change would take priority, so that's the catcher for the DH. Then the Pitcher would replace the DH. Which would put the pitcher at 5 in the lineup.

At least, that ought to be the rule...

You're right alex, but I think DNL's point is that that's an MLB rule and not international...I really have no idea beyond MLB...

Alex is 100% correct. The pitcher moves into the lineup in the spot of the player who leaves
