Baseball Cards

This could be sad, weird, or funny depending on how you look at it, by I still collect baseball cards. Are they going out of style or something. Almost everyone I know doesn't collect them anymore. I personally think that they're fun and it's one of my ways of getting a good idea of what the baseball players can do next season...

I have some baseball card stories for the ;chair soon.

I bought my first car with sale proceeds from my card collection.

My wife will buy random packs every so often for me but she gets to open them up!

and they went out of style in 1987 (when the hobby went nuts and oversaturated the marketplace)

I agree. It used to be just Topps, but when all these knockoffs started coming out, the price went up, the quality went down, and worst of all, no more freakin' gum. I haven't bought cards for 20 years, although my 1960's cards I got as a kid I still have. Couple worth more than a grand.

Well, there are some stores where they have the ones with gum. I buy em sometimes. BTW Kelsdad, which ones are worth more than a grand?

I was also wondering whether I could help run the store for a guy I've known my whole life; a man that owns a store a town away from where I live. He said that I could possibly buy it when I have enough money and time to run it. He's gotta be in his late 50's/60s, so he still has time. So, probably when I'm around 25-30, I'll buy it from him. But will cards be in style then? I dunno. He's bringing in other stuff though, like jerseys, posters, etc.

Speaking of this, anyone know what the defect on Frank Thomas' Topps rookie card is? I have it and I hear the difference in price from the normal one to abnormal one is like 100,000%.

1990 is the year he was a rookie. But prospect and rookie are different subjects. If he's a prospect, it's gonna cost a lot more. I'm not sure what the defect is. What card is it? Fleer? Topps?

I bought so many packs of cards from '86- '90 that I started memorizing sequences of the pack orders in Topps and DonRuss waxpacks - You could make out the last card in each pack through the wrapper and if you knew the order they were cut, you could tell what cards were in which pack - Fleer and Score mixed 'em up slightly better.

I still regularly collect the late 80s-early 90s cards myself, though I try to stay away from anything recent.
