BREAKING: Tom Brady Reportedly Out For the Season With Torn ACL

Posted by SSreporters

I'll make a very short cameo like cpcp (really, I haven't been on AGM, not even lurking in several days), but uh.......can you say karma?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ms-bradyoutforyear090708&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Time for Matt Cassel to lead you to the Super Bowl now New England. This totally offsets my pure frustration that was the Seahawks. Wow. I think Crackajg called it in the bold prediction thread a while back.

Well that's my cameo, bye bye.

How exactly is it karma? Tom Brady has never done anything to anybody; by all accounts he's a good guy off the field. Besides, nobody deserves to suffer a torn ACL. You may think it's what the Patriots and their fans deserve, but it's bullsh*t to imply that Brady deserved to suffer that kind of injury. Honestly, I liked you better when you weren't making these kinds of "cameos".

Well, to hear some people tell it, Belichick and his system "turned" Brady into a star anyway... If so, no reason Cassel can't make a Mo Lewis out of Bernard Pollard, right? Or would a total Pats collapse be what it takes to silence those who thought Brady was a "system QB"?

"Finally" have to face adversity? Prior to 1994, we were 221-270-9; only four teams had a worse winning % from 1960-1993 than the Patriots (Jets, Saints, Falcons, Bucs). The success you've seen from the Patriots since 1994 (and especially since 2001) has been the exception in the history of this franchise, not the rule.

Brady hasn't missed a start since being the starter for the Pats, so I'd say it's more the law of averages than "karma" catching up with the Patriots and Brady. It sucks big time, but what are you gonna do? Start Cassel, close your eyes, and hope for the best (if your a Pats fan).

I never understood why everyone was jumping on the bandwagon last year anyway... Who jumps on the bandwagon after 3 Super Bowl rings? Wouldn't it have made more sense to get on the bandwagon after, say, the Snow Bowl in '01? Or be like me and get on that Pats bandwagon during the '85 season... I have an excuse, though: that's the year I was born.

Point is, who jumps on the bandwagon at a team's absolute peak, maybe the most absolute peak any team has ever had, ever? There's nowhere to go but down, nothing but disappointment. I knew something like this would happen eventually, but at least I have the good times that led up to it -- what do the bandwagoners have?

Big mistake thinking this team is bad. They may not be 16-0, but they are not bad. Their running game is strong and diverse. They can handle this better than most people expect. Did we not list in the Duante Culpepper thread how many QB's that Moss made look good? I think Moss can make Cassell look good. not as good as Brady but definitely good enough to keep the Patriots as a contender.

Yeah, but don't you typically jump on when a team looks like it's "up-and-coming" good? Like, when there's a little success, but not a championship yet... 3 rings later, it's kind of too late -- or maybe I just don't understand the whole bandwagoning phenomenon.

That's true. I suppose there are different styles of bandwagoning -- there's bandwagoning just before expected success (see Carolina and Arizona practically every preseason this decade), but there's also bandwagoning after success (post-04 Sox, post-96 Yankees, post-00 Lakers, in fact Yankees in general, etc.). Let's ask this guy, he can answer all of our questions...

This creates a bit of a Catch-22 for Patriots fans. Is Brady truly an MVP? If so, then the Pats should see a dramatic fall-off without him. If they continue to win without him, then you have to wonder just how great he is.

Yes, I understand the concept of team achievements and I also understand that the Patriots have an extremely weak schedule this season. They may continue to be successful for other reasons, but it makes for an interesting debate.

I'm not so sure...there were idiot eagles fans who demanded that the Eagles resign Jeff Garcia after his 2006 season, but the reality of the matter is McNabb gave them the better chance to win...

I'd venture to say that no matter what Matt Cassel does this year, Tom Brady is the starter when he's healthy simply because Tom Brady gives his team the best chance to win

Look no further than Randy Moss last year, both are good, but clearly as a pair, they're the top duo in the league as of 9/1/08.

The question isn't whether Brady is the best QB on NE. Hell, Cassell didn't even start in college. Besides, Brady's resume allows him the benefit of the doubt in my mind. It's his job until he can no longer do it.

The question is, if the Patriots continue to win without him, is he truly MVP? Or is he a system quarterback who benefited immensely from the players around him?

Is there a QB who doesn't benefit from the players around him?

Besides, MVP of the league is different than MVP of a Team...I'd say if you gave out MVPs of Teams, at least half would go to a tackle

The league projects a different need (AKA QBs, RBs...basically scorers only) with no heed to leadership not qualified by position...

Why does it have to be one extreme or another? Either he's MVP, or completely unremarkable? If Cassel throws 50 TDs this year, then maybe you can start throwing the term "system quarterback" around.

When the Patriots won, it was because of the team. I think Brady is the most important player on the team, and one of the best at what he does. But if they win without him, it doesn't do much to discredit him.

Pretty sure Brady's not going to get "Bledsoed" by Cassel this year. And if Brady comes back and has a 2009 season like Drew had in '02 (4359 yds, 24-15 ratio), I'd take it.

Now that the shitstorm is over, I'll say it...

Today was awesome. I biked into work today...that's how happy I was. Cars everywhere pissed off and swerving...didn't bother me (I knew why they were so pissy). I walked into my building smiling Ear to Ear...

Where were you New Englanders to console me when my star quarterback went down with an ACL tear? I thought not...

Just to doubt my poor team about a year later venturing into Foxborough and building the "blueprint."

I don't feel bad. I've been handing out "My star quarterback just tore his ACL" Club memberships since 8am and its been awesome

"He'll be ok," "we've got Matt Cassel" "The Patriots are still good"

Say what you want, but combine the loss of Brady with a team (namely defense) that's been decimated by, if nothing else, being on top for so long.

Besides, Brady's injury is a far cry from what Albert Haynesworth did yesterday.

People are pissed off and driving aggressively because it's Boston. I drove through the city the day after the Red Sox won the World Series and got cut off, flipped off, and nearly hit the same amount as any other weekday.

Another reason people are pissed: because of guys like you on bicycles cutting them off, ignoring red lights, peddling in the middle of the road. Not saying you do that, but most cyclists here do, and us drivers want to kill them.

Actually, I 100% agree Rawb...Mass bikers are huge douches (the essence of Massholes). I don't run red lights and If I do, its either during a walk sign (over a crosswalk) or when no ones there.

The Peddling in the road thing is a safety issue. I've been run off the road a few times and I have grown used to moving into the turning lane, because otherwise I can't get over. Since I moved north of Cambridge, the bike lanes are nice, but in the city, they're few and far between. I try to avoid major intersections, but at places like the bridges (longfellow or mass ave), you've got no choice.

But yeah, many (many) bikers are huge douches, you won't get an argument out of me...

its also no less legal or a biker to run a redlight than a driver, just less enforced...but I can't even count the number of times a driver's either A) tried to pull in front of me when turning right or B) or not noticed me while turning right...hence the reason I'll put myself in their view
